Some people just really get to me (a long vent) - Page 2 - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Abuse of the system is rampant in our country. Some people seem to think that they are owed by the government and will do everything they can to protect the lifestyle the government provides. I really think that people who use the system should have to prove that they NEED the services because they are UNABLE to work and not that they have to stay home and take care of children they keep having. My parents have five kids, my dad was in the military (read crappy salary). My mom was a SAHM who then worked outside after he retired. We didn't get a lot, mom made our clothes, we got all the necessities but few of the luxuries. We all now work hard to get where we are. I would never think of accepting gov't help unless I was totally incapable sp? of doing some kind of productive work.
at one point in my life...i was a single mother...with no help from anyone. I worked my bottom off....paid all my bills.....and tried to get assistance. i was denied.....because...and i quote... "your car is worth too much money"
huh??? then the lady tells me...and again i quote... " now if you quit your job.....we can give you all kinds of assistance" EXCUSE ME???? so now if i try to work and do my part i deserve nothing....but if i sit at home watching soap operas all day you will pay my rent..bills...food....everything....
i couldnt do it...how do i look my daughter in the face and tell her she needs to work hard to suceed while im sittting around the house taking state money??? its amazing to me how it works....hopefully one day it will change to help those that try to help themselves....and not those that sit around just because they can.....
Stefffe, you hit the nail on the head.
Being a single mother myself, I was denied help last year when my life was at it's worst and you want to know the reason? "You have RN after your name-go get a job".
It makes me enraged to know that there are people who keep pumping out the babies because they KNOW how to work "the system" and those who truly need it here and there can't get it!!
Welfare is for temporary get you back on your feet help......at least that's why it was started. Now it's a way of life!!
Sorry that's all I can say without going off on a tangent because it's so prevalent in the area I'm in for folks to "work it" and when I hear of instances where folks who truly need it can't get it........
Disney thoughts.....gotta keep Disney thoughts or my blood will boil!!
I would be very annoyed too. I suck at making large amounts of money like some people are good at. And I have been on welfare a few times myself. But now its been over 20 years since the last time. Everything I get I earn. And I save. Some people just love the welfare system and feel that watching Oprah in the afternoon and waiting for the welfare check is a great thing. The goverment owes me nothing. Well except for Social Security I will start getting in about 10 years) I work and I usually am happy doing it. Hang in there Meg!! Your neighbor will (I hope) one day get clear about the whole money thing.

I would be annoyed too. I've learned, though, unless I'm going to do something about situations like that (for example, report system-abusers...or run for office ), it's best to try and not stew over it. It'll only get you down and raise your blood pressure, and she'll still be doing the same thing.
I agree wholeheartedly with your statement, Scarlett!
It's better for our psyches if we don't let things like this "get to us" -- there are some people who will work hard and there are some who won't. There are some who will take assistance and there are some who won't. There are some who will abuse the "system" and some who won't.
You can only do what you feel is right and you can raise your children to understand (and, hopefully, emulate) your moral code.
I hope you can find peace with this issue and move forward with ease and comfort in the relationship with your neighbor!
Eileen
I'm not sure how it works in other states, but in Michigan, if you want "cash assistance" (money to pay rent and utilities), you have to be actively seeking employment. They even have an agency set up (Michigan Works) to oversee your efforts. You're required to submit a certain number of job applications per day, submit to your caseworker where you submitted said applications, and they check up to make sure that you did what you said. Any job that you accept has to be "legitmate"...helping "Uncle Joe" put a new roof on his house doesn't count. Not following the rules makes you non-compliant, and you lose your cash grant.
I would be upset too. The system does need to be fixed. When I managed my family's Hallmark store, people would come in and ask me to sign their form that they tried to find a job, but wasn't hired so they could get assistance. I told them that I wasn't hiring, so I thought it was wrong to sign their paper. If I had interviewed them I thought it would be different. They weren't happy with me, but I'm sure walking into a store asking someone to sign their paper without asking for a job, isn't really what our state had in mind. Just remember you are being a wonderful and responsible example to your DD. Keep your chin up!
