Game, set and match - our day at Wimbledon! - Page 2 - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

How cool Cheryl!! I'm glad you finally were able to get tickets! Ugh about the rain! But I'm glad to see it's starting
I have to share that I used to LOVE to watch all the tennis tournaments on tv when I was younger, and it would be during the summer when I was home alone. I thought it would be a good idea to play some tennis with the brick hearth wall in the living room... yeah... broke a lamp on the mantle....
I'm glad to know I wasn't the only one who played tennis inside the house - fortunately my mum threw me outside before I broke anything, but it did come close!
I’ll let the photos tell the story of the match, which Sharapova won 6 – 3, 6 – 3, but it was a very close match. I was amazed at how long some of the games lasted and Sugayama even managed to break Sharapova’s serve, which is something I didn’t expect to see. I really was rooting for Sugayama, because I like to support the underdog in a lot of matches and she certainly had a better disposition that Sharapova, who just never smiled until she won the match. Sugayama on the other hand was very expressive, especially when she challenged decisions and lost.
For the first time ever, Wimbledon has introduced a new system, where players have three challenges against the judges’ decisions. If they’re successful, they keep their challenges, but for every incorrect challenge, they lose a challenge. So if a ball is called out and they challenge that call and the ball is proved to be out, using the electronic Hawkeye system that monitors exactly where the ball drops on the court, then they’ve lost one of their three challenges.
It was fascinating to hear how quiet it was while the players were serving – honestly you didn’t want to breathe and you could hear a pin drop! It was also very interesting to see the quirks that the players have, such as Sharapova always having to brush hair away from her ears, even if there wasn’t any there, before serving, and the way that they both made the other wait when they were on the receiving end.
From what we gathered afterwards from people on other courts, we had by far the best match, as the others that were being played at the same time seemed to be very one sided affairs, whereas there was no way you could say that about ours. It was a first class match and, despite the final score, it was fairly evenly matched between the two women.
Warming up Sugayama The press photographers – all concentrating on one thing…. … and here’s what they were concentrating on – Maria Sharapova! Serving What a great outfit she was wearing! Sugayama in action… … getting ready to serve… … and serving! An overall view of the court – look how full it is now! I love this shot – a real case of a picture telling a story…. Sharapova in action… … and Sugayama in action Game, set and match! Sharapova celebrates

Just as the match was finishing, it had started to rain. Indeed we did wonder if they’d be able to finish or not, but as it was match point when the rain got heavier, they let them play it out and fortunately that was the conclusion to the match, because otherwise they would have had a very long wait to finish it….
We sat and waited and hoped that the rain would die off, but we soon realised that it would be a while, as the covers were hoisted up into their familiar tent shape. As we knew that took a good 10 minutes to take down, they’d only have done that if they didn’t expect play to re-start for some time. Mark took the opportunity to go and get some hot food – fish and chips for me and chicken and chips for him, but he was gone ages, as the food places were mobbed and an absolute nightmare by all accounts. We sat and ate our food under the umbrella and as we weren’t getting wet and it wasn’t that cold, it wasn’t too bad. Eventually we decided to take a wander around the grounds and I got some more photos…
Statue to the famous Fred Perry Des Lynam, one of the UK’s most famous sports broadcasters The BBC broadcasting live from Wimbledon Lots of umbrellas – not a good sight. We were seated four seats along from the pair in green ponchos in the front row – talk about good seats!
It wasn’t sounding promising, as the announcements weren’t giving a time for play to re-start, instead they were just talking about the rain. I knew in my heart that meant that there wouldn’t be any further play, but we waited, as I knew that they usually made the announcement at around 7pm. Sure enough, just before, as we were waiting for another batch of strawberries, we got the announcement I was expecting. Fortunately we were right by one of the gates, as everyone surged towards it immediately. I’m glad we were there, as we were quickly back to the car and on our way home.
It had been a wonderful day, despite the rain and I just hope that we can get tickets again, as I’d love to go back and hopefully see more tennis in 2008!
The weather today was wet for most of the day with temperatures in the 60’s. The best thing today was seeing a full match. The worst thing today was all the rain. Today we tried going to Wimbledon And the result was it’s something I want to do again and I really hope we’re lucky in the 2008 ticket ballot. The most magical moment today was when the players came out on court.
