Forums Closed
|
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!
Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

Re: Cedar Point - It\'s a Giant Pop Up Book!
Thoughts on a few more of the coasters...
Mean Streak - this is a TALL wooden coaster - one of the tallest in the nation, I believe.
And it is one mean ride - the name suits it well. It’s a rough and tumbly ride and you’re
certain it’s about to collapse upon itself any minute. It certainly lets you know who is in
charge while you are on it, that is for sure. The queue winds through the wooden
structure and the wood is so thick that at some points you can barely see through it!
Susan chose to pass on this one after we told her just how rough of a ride this was, but
certainly a wild experience!
Blue Streak - a smaller wooden coaster located near the front of the park behind Raptor -
it’s a classic coaster that’s been around since the early 1900’s, but we thought it was one
of the funnest in the park! You pop out of your seat at every crest and it’s speedy,
smooth, but bumpy ride - not all at rough like Mean Streak - it’s just what a coaster
should be!
The Mean Streak tearing it up!
Gemini - this is the park’s racing coaster! It’s built upon wooden scaffolding, but has
tubular rails that give it an ultra smooth ride! It’s got a stomach-wrenching first drop (at
least from the back seat!) and some great “airtime” and curves. Not at all too wild and
another great coaster to work up to the really big ones!
The racing Gemini!
Disaster Transport - this is an enclosed bobsled coaster. The queue is highly themed, but
the coaster ride itself it mainly in the dark. Another “big ride” my youngest son could ride
so we hit it quite a few times. It’s very speedy and being in the dark really enhances the
experience. The queue is really cool - it’s in black light and you can use 3-D glasses to
enhance the experience of the queue, which the kids LOVED! A fun ride, worth seeing!
Corkscrew - a “training wheels” looping coaster - I remember seeing this one on the cover
of Newsweek when it was built in 1976 as the worlds biggest multiple looping coaster and
being scared then! HA! It has a very small drop, a loop, and 2 corkscrew maneuvers that
go head over heels right over the midway - so it has a really cool placement as you can
literally look right up into the corkscrews from below! Thumbs up, it’s held the test of
time.
Flipping over the midway!
Wildcat - this is a small “galaxy” or “carnival” style coaster with a few drops and lots of
curves! You ride in 4 man vehicles and it’s surprisingly speedy and fun.
Cedar Creek Mine Ride - a runaway mine train coaster similar to Big Thunder Mountain,
but not nearly as themed. It’s a fun little ride with a few small drops and lots of curves.
Woodstock Express - a junior coaster for the whole family - it’s very similar to the
Barnstormer at The Magic Kingdom, but it’s got an extended layout for a longer ride. It’s
themed to The Peanuts (Woodstock, Snoopy’s friend), which makes it very cute!
Jr. Gemini - the smallest coaster in the park, really only for small kids but parents can ride
with them. Don’t - it’s painful for anyone over 10 years old! HA! Seriously, it’s better to
watch the kids on this one - my youngest thought it was so cool to ride without an adult!
It’s a cute little ride.
Coming up: You mean they actually do have more than just coasters here?!?

Re: Cedar Point - It\'s a Giant Pop Up Book!
We were there in 1999. The only coaster I remember doing was Disaster Transport. I'm not into coasters so I stayed on the ground most of the time. Cedar Point is a great family park. Glad you had a great time.

Re: Cedar Point - It\'s a Giant Pop Up Book!
Oh yeah! I almost forgot about this! Cedar Point has pins! My oldest son went crazy and started a new Cedar Point collection. Now, they only have maybe 10-15 to choose from - the major coasters, a Cedar Point one and one for the Power Tower, but we just thought it was the coolest thing!

Re: Cedar Point - It\'s a Giant Pop Up Book!
Thanks for the report, Steve. Hopefully it will make our planning a little easier. I was checking out the website last night for lodging but couldn't get any availabilty to come up. It looks like the Breakers Express is within our budget. I was reading about the Great Bear Lodge in the AAA book and told DH I wanted to stay there until I looked at the rates
Glad you enjoyed your trip and got your son hooked on pin collecting too!

Re: Cedar Point - It\'s a Giant Pop Up Book!
That picture of the Monster brings back memories of visiting Six Flags over GA when I was a kid. They had a ride just like it called MoMo the Monster. Does anybody remember that?
And the Witches Wheel is just like the Wheelie, which was still there as of my last visit.
Sounds like you guys had a blast!

Steve
Do they still have the after dark laser show? They had a nice one 3 years ago.
If memory serves the park was started as sorta a Coney Island type park in the 1890's. I think I got that info from the Travel Channel.
A little trivia. Cedar Point parent co. owns Dorney Park, Pa and Knotts Berry Farm in Calif.

<font size="2" face="Comic Sans MS, Arial">They sure do have the laser/fireworks show and it's pretty neat. The park really is very Coney Island-esque - very much a seaside resort! And Cedar Fair, the parent company also operates Valleyfair in MN and Worlds of Fun in Kansas City, MO!

Steve,
Great report. If i wasn't such a chicken I would be there in a minute. I would probably only get up the courage to ride 2 or 3 of the coasters you described.
