Disney is going to eliminate plastic straws, in room plastics and shopping bags - Page 2 - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:

Moving on with the current of the years.

It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!

She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.

The article I'm reading says that Disney will begin offering resuable bags for a nominal fee. Seems like they're gonna want you to bring em back.
Just another thing to carry around in the backpack til I need it.

That's the only thing I'm not sure about. I'm surprised they're not going to offer paper bags. Of course they do offer the option of sending things back to your resort, but once upon a time (we're talking probably at least 10 years ago now), they used to guarantee it would be there by something like 10:00am the next morning and we used the service all the time. Now it takes longer, it doesn't always work out for us.
I have been using reusable shopping bags for several years. I still use plastic for meat. I'm not going to stick meat in my bags unless the meat is in something else first.
I know I'll never buy the metal straws. I'm another one that don't think they would stay clean. DH says way back in the 60's we used paper straws. I don't remember tht.

A brush made for the straw may help...wil kn have to look into that. Our 4 metal straws were purchased at our zoo as part of a fundraiser for the docent program.
I have been thinking about the metal straws for quite some time.
I had to order something else on Amazon just now, so I added a set of straws to the order. The set come with 12 straws, 2 cleaning brushes and a carrying bag. I am hoping to have them in time for our trip to California on the 5th. We will have them for sure for our cruise and WDW trip in January.

I wish Disney would talk to Blaze and use the type of straws they have. They are plant based and are completely biodegradable. They are just as durable when drinking as plastic straws though.

Paper straws I recall using when I was a kid back when dinosaurs roamed were plenty durable. They may have been thinly coated with wax as were milk cartons then.
Anyway, I recall using the same straw for more than one glass of Coke without any problem.

I have the stainless steel straws, cheap they are off Amazon, come with a straw brush. I love these ,I wanted them to help the environment so I definitely will bring them with me to Disney from now on...not sure about the bags, I do use reusable in general but not sure how this will work while in Disney
One a side note, we pretty much always have our purchases sent back to the resort for us so we don't have to carry them around.
I gotta be honest, me personally - I have no issues with any of this.
But, the issue with having purchases sent back to the resort is that some people are there for too short a time, or they aren’t staying on Disney property. IMO, it’s unrealistic for any shopping venue to expect that people A) bring their own bags, B) have purchases sent to their resorts, and C) purchase bags in addition to other purchases.
If I’m at WDW for 3 days, I don’t want to carry a shopping bag with me, on the chance that I might purchase something. Also, how many tourists wait until the last day of their trips to purchase souvenirs? A lot. That eliminates the idea of shipping back to the resort, even for onsite guests.
If Disney wants to eliminate plastic, that’s fine with me, but they need to offer paper alternatives without asking guests to purchase extra or bring their own.
I’m probably in the minority on this but I don’t like paper straws since they don’t hold up well and I don’t want to have to think about bringing a straw on vacation with me and washing/recycling for future drinks. Also, they’ll need to package store bought items for guests to send back to their resorts.
