Trip Report - Jan 14-22 Cruise/WDW: A Disney Trip Full of Hope! COMPLETED!! 7/15 - Page 19 - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!
Welcome! We're happy you've found the PassPorter Community -- the friendliest place to plan your vacation to Walt Disney World, Disney Cruise Line, Disneyland, and the world in general! Melissa, I'm terribly sorry about your experience at Chef Mickey's AND the fact that it was Hope's first character meal. The character interactions at CM are short to begin with because of the capacity of the restaurant, but not even stopping to get a picture and getting skipped over is just completely unacceptable. Let's be honest, when we go to a character meal, we're paying to see the characters, not the food.
You said that your table was the second to last in the rotation of the area you were in. Was the last table skipped over also??
It sounds like your day gets better being that MK is still magical for you And I can't wait to hear how this event was resolved.
Melissa, I'm so sorry your Chef Mickey's experience was that awful. I would have been more than upset if I were in your shoes, especially for Hope's 1st Character Meal. I can't believe Donald nearly stood you up and Mickey of all characters stood you up. I really don't blame you for saying your first time at Chef Mickey's was probably your last. How upsetting. I really hope your day got better. Just curious if you actually pummeled Mickey or if there was a better Mickey around to brighten your day. P.s. The Mickey you had at your meal doesn't deserve to wear te Mickey Costume if he's going to treat Disney Guests tey way he treated you, Chad, & Hope(maybe he should be Scrooge). That's just not right the 3 of you were treated in a less than magical way at such a popular Character Meal. I'm sorry Melissa.

My heart broke for the 3 of you reading your last installment. I really don't blame you for wanting to get out of there. You're absolutely right that the Character Meals are expensive and you not only pay for the food but the Character Interaction. I am so sorry to hear that all the characters except Minnie(who seemed to spend the most time at your table & at least gave more of an effort to interact with Hope) didn't give you your Money's worth & more. I too read your post hoping it would not only be a magical moment for the 3 of you, but I couldn't believe how dissappointing this meal was for you! I hope Walt was in disbelief too, as we all know that wasn't the kind of magic he created for his Parks. Sending tons of hugs for the 3 of you after that experience.
We never saw Mickey again that whole day, but if I did, I probably would have tried to take him out! I was that angry with him. You are so sweet, and I thank you for your kind words. Yes, it was a very bad morning, but it did get better as the day progressed, I mean, we were in Disney so how bad could it really be? As much as spending the money upset me, it upset me more that Hope didn't get the experience that I was so excited for her to get. That will be a part of my memories forever, but I do plan on making up for it on our next trip!

So sorry to make you misty eyed. As a first-time mommy it really bothered me that my baby was getting treated like that. Thank goodness she wasn't old enough to understand what was happening, and maybe that's why they were being so lax with her, but that's still no excuse...not for any child or person for that matter.

I am happy to hear that something happens later on to make up for it though.
It definitely was not a fun time at all, but yes, a wonderful CM makes it all better in the end...so stay tuned.

You're exactly right. If I wanted to just enjoy a nice breakfast I could have gone to any of the restaurants, but I picked this one specifically for the character experience. As for the table that was after us, no they weren't skipped at all. They went over to them, took pictures, and then left the room. A couple of times I thought they would come back to us when they were finished with that family, so I waited patiently, but then they would just leave the room to go onto another section. I have no clue what they were thinking.
We were thinking about going to CM's next year for baby #2's first birthday, but now I'm not so sure. All Ears ratings aren't that great for it either. I think I'll stick with Garden Grill to see Mickey as we've never had a bad experience there.

It's funny because I had a pre-conceived notion that the characters would be falling over themselves to interact with a baby! Oh how wrong I was. I may eventually give this a second try, but when she's a little bit bigger. Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day, and Garden Grill doesn't do that anymore do they? I've never eaten there so maybe it's worth a try for a good character experience for her.

We had good character interaction at Cape May it was low key and relaxing not at all like 1900 or chef mickeys they were crazy. The ones that are at Cape May are Minnie, goofy and donald but it was awesome.
I'm sorry to hear about your experience at Chef Mickey's. I've been there a number of times and never had an experience like that, which made me mad for you!
I still don't blame you for wanting a completely different experience for Hope during her 1st Character Meal and during her 1st Trip too. I know you won't forget it and good thing she is still too little to remember it. I'm glad the rest of your day wasn't ruined by it, and glad you didn't see Mickey(I'm sure that would have been a pretty sight). I can't wait to read how you will be making it up to her during your next trip. Possibly with Princesses? Looking foward to more please Melissa. It's still a shame that you got a not so nice Mickey at Breakfast.

No, Garden Grill only does dinner now. We had lunch on Dylan's birthday the last day it was offered. Tusker House was another good place for us for breakfast. We went to 1900 PF for breakfast on his bday trip too and the characters interacted with all of us. We haven't been to Crystal Palace with him yet, but we have been and we've had good luck there too.

I'd definitely try Cape May for breakfast - maybe if we stay at Beach Club again so it's close. Thanks for the tip!

Happy belated birthday to Hope! So sorry about the bad experience at CM, I would have been the same way. We like Cape May Cafe alot for breakfast, the food is yummy and after eating there twice, no bad experience. Another great breakfast was tusker house, when we went it was donalds breakfastasaurous. I think sometimes Chef Mickey's is a little over rated. We haven't eaten there in a while, just pulled away from it. Ohana even has characters for breakfast and its family style so you don't have to leave the table to get food which is so nice with little ones!

Sorry it's taken me so long to respond on here. We are staying at the BC in September, and I was actually thinking of trying this place out. It's a buffet right?

I've eaten at Donald's before it became Tusker House, and I really enjoyed it. I agree, Chef Mickey's is overrated, and now I can say that I at least gave it a try. I also really like Ohana's and the next time we go for a whole week I plan on eating here one morning.

Yes it is but without the chaos of chef Mickey's or 1900 park fare. It was really nice and relaxing and a great way to start our day. Another one we had good interaction was Crystal Palace we had 8:10 reservations. I found them more enjoyable.

Finally an update after a very crazy week and relaxing holiday. Sorry guys, but here you go!
Wednesday, January 20th: Part Two – A first at Disney!
We quietly made our way over to the MK to meet up with my parents. I couldn’t wait to tell them about our experience at Chef Mickey’s. Talking to my mom always makes things better, so I was hoping that she would be able to brighten my day.
When we saw them I immediately went on my Chef Mickey’s tirade , and just by getting it off my chest to someone who wasn’t there helped a lot. I decided that I wasn’t going to let this ruin my first time at the MK with my daughter no:, so I made the best of a bad situation, and enjoyed being there with her.
The characters were out in the Town Square, but I wasn’t in the mood for being all lovey dovey with them. But, as we were getting ready to walk down Main Street, I notice Pinocchio was out, and I hardly ever see him, so I decided to give in and get our picture taken with him. He was very nice and I wanted to tell him that he needed to go have an intervention with the characters over at Chef Mickey’s, but I held my tongue.
While we were making our way towards the castle, the Main Street performers made an appearance, so we stopped to watch them for a little bit.
A couple of them kept waving to Hope, which she loved, and when the show was over they came over to say .
We also had to stop to get the ever popular picture in front of the castle.
We had to make our routine stop at the Baby Care Center to fill Hope’s bottles up with water, and I didn’t take any pictures in there because someone already posted some on the boards earlier this year. After that detour we made our way into Fantasyland.
She has this look of almost knowing how special of a place she was about to enter.
We decided to start Hope off on Cinderella’s Carousel. She loved this ride, and we loved riding it with her.
We were going to try and ride Dumbo, but that line is always so long. What is it with this ride and Peter Pan ??? I mean I can see where Dumo may have a longer wait time because you have to wait for each ride to be over before you can load new people onto it, but Peter Pan is continuous!?! Anyway, we noticed that Snow White’s line consisted of maybe 4 people, so we decided to give that a try. First, I had to make sure she wasn’t going to get scared
She didn’t even jump when the Witch popped up. She’s such a brave girl. After that, we thought it was time for something a little more silly, so we headed over to Winnie the Pooh. This line wasn’t that long either, maybe a 10 minute wait, which I don’t think is bad at all. Before we got on this ride, we noticed she was starting to get a little tired, and it probably wouldn’t be too long before she took a nap.
Notice this look of sleepiness in her eyes...
We were right. After we got off of Pooh, she was in no time, so we thought this would be a great time to head on over to Space Mountain. I didn’t get to ride this last time because I was pregnant, but I don’t even think I could have because I think it was being refurbished at the time. My dad can’t get on these kinds of rides because he has a very bad back, so he watched Hope while my mom, Chad and I rode it. We didn’t get FPs because we figured she would probably be sleeping for a while and we had plenty of time to kill. The wait time was showing 45 minutes, but when we got in to the main queue area, there was hardly any line at all...it took us about 15 minutes to get through that line. You could definitely tell that the ride was darker than before. When I was little, I used to put my brother in the front seat, so he could yell when the drops were coming, but this time my mom was in the front, and she couldn’t even see the track. I couldn’t prepare myself this time, but I think it added to the fun.
My dad was waiting for us by those tables right outside of the exit, and when we got over to him we noticed that Hope was wide awake. I asked my dad why she wasn’t sleeping anymore, and he said a woman and her son were walking by and the child accidentally walked into the stroller. They apologized up and down, but unfortunately he couldn’t get her back to sleep after that. She didn’t seem to be to upset about it anyway, so we decided to take her on Buzz.
Chad was so excited to get on this ride. In the past I’ve beaten him every time, and he figured since I was going to have Hope on my lap that it would give him an advantage. I will admit that it was very difficult trying to shoot and maneuver the car all with an 8 month old in my lap, but after it was all said and done, I still beat him!!! I wish I would have gotten a picture of it, but I didn’t have enough hands. My mom was the only person to get a better score than me, but I didn’t care about that. My competitive side came out and I wasn’t going to let a baby hinder my stellar ability on Buzz… sorry sweetie!
We were finished with Tomorrow Land for the moment and decided to head on over to Liberty Square and visit their resident ghosts at the Haunted Mansion. I usually like doing this ride at night, but since we were going to be enjoying SpectroMagic at that time, we had to ride it while the sun was still shining.
After HM, we started to get , and since we didn’t have the biggest of breakfasts, we decided to stop and eat. My appetite was really starting to come back full force…a very good thing…and I was also starting to feel a little bit better. We hit up Columbia Harbor House and enjoyed a cup of their new England clam chowder and sweetened iced tea. Then it was off to ride more rides!
I had a very good feeling that Hope would really like It’s a Small World, so we went to get in line for that. My parents decided to not enjoy this ride with us…not big fans. Instead they went over to see Mickey’s Philharmagic, something I didn’t get to enjoy because I didn’t want to take her into the theater. If she would have had a melt down, I didn’t want to be in there when it happened.
Sure enough, she LOVED It’s a Small World. With all of the colors and things to look at, she didn’t know what to do with herself.
As much as this ride gets on my nerves sometimes, I would have rode it 100 times if I knew it was going to make her that happy. The sad part is when we go back in September, it’s going to be closed down for refurbishment.
While walking past Peter Pan, we noticed that the line was even longer. I guess we weren’t going to be getting on that ride today. After we found my parents, I just happened to see someone carrying an ice cream cone , and I thought that would be the perfect treat to help my throat get to feeling all better again. It was really starting to feel better now, and I knew it just needed a little something to help it along.
I haven’t had an ice cream cone in forever, and it tasted sooooo good. Hope kept looking at me with her cute little baby eyes, and I thought to myself, how can I deny this little bit of heaven to my little girl? She had never yet had sugar at this point, and no, I’m not that mother who won’t ever let her child have sweets, I was just still trying her out on new foods, and I didn’t want to give her a taste of sugar before she was ready for it.
I knew at that moment she was ready. We were at the perfect place for her to have her very first bite of vanilla ice cream…
Not sure what to make of this wonderful stuff on her taste buds.
Okay, so her face may not show how much she really enjoyed the ice cream, but I knew she it because every time I waited longer than 5 seconds to shove another spoonful in her mouth, she would start getting all agitated. Oh boy, I think I created a monster!
