Aloha Hawaii! Our 10 Day Cruise to Hawaii on the Disney Wonder, September 7, 2015 Trip Report completed 07/31/2016 - Page 18 - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Oh that view brings back so many great memories - and I remember that food truck, as I believe we got some fruit there. We couldn't get over the choice it had!
I'm totally going back over your Hawaii TR!

It was right on time! We didn't bring anything to eat for lunch hoping that the "food truck" would be sufficient

I don't know, but I read about so many tours that allowed you to get into a waterfall. That would be quite an experience!

Kaua'i: The beach and some serious fruit
We came down from the canyon and at the end of the road, we decided to make a right turn, "just to see" what was down that way. I'm so glad we did because we found a deserted beach - Kekaha Beach. For many long moments, we just took in the sun, salt, sand and surf.
Teeny tiny little crab!
Back on the road back towards Nawiliwili, sundrenched and happy. (There's a sailboat waaayy back there...)
We had one collective goal in mind: shave ice. We kind of had an idea of what it was, but only that it was sort of like a sno-cone. There was supposed to be a great place nearby called Jo-Jo's but we couldn't find it. We found a charming little place called "Coconut Corner Cafe". I tried to google map it, but the street view only came up with the original house that it was, still the original yellow paint, from 2012!
We parked across from The Historic Waimea Theater. (Opened in 1938) It only plays one movie at a time - archaic, right? At this time it was playing "Man from U.N.C.L.E."
The sun was out in full force, time for something cool and fruity!
Dragonfruit!
That thing is a jackfruit right?
There was a slow moving line, but we didn't mind. I had reminded everyone that we were on "island time", not East Coast time.
The fruit almost seemed to glow.
Taiwanese cookies and snacks and dried fruit.
Finally there! We had had enough time to figure out what we wanted.
Local honey - I wanted some so badly! I just couldn't take the chance of it breaking in my checked luggage. We were going to be up to the limit in our luggage weight also and I just didn't want to deal with it. I'll have to see if I can have some shipped. The honey was so dark, ah man I wanted it
Not sure what these nuts were.
"Look kids - Real bananas!"
YES.
She's taking a block of ice and literally shaving it with this awesome old machine
mmmmm.... the flava
I got passion fruit I think? I was somehow dusted with salty sand from Kekaha
Next: A little bit of weather and finally home on the Wonder. And more food.
Oh wow, talk about seeing the "real" Hawai'i if you know what I mean - that shop was just what I always imagined Hawai'i to be and we found some similar places on our visit to Maui and I was pleased it was just like I thought it would be!
I actually never tried the shave ice, I'm just much more of an ice cream kind of gal. But glad you found a good local spot to sample some from, aren't the size of those things crazy!?

What a great tour. Loved the shop and the fruit and shaved ice looked yummy.
There was more to the shop. In another room you could buy sundresses, souvenirs and whatnot.

It was exactly what we were looking for and we got to taste a bit of local Hawaii

There were other things to try but we were only focused on the shave ice. Yes they were really big!

Although too busy building an arc right now to think about how good that must've been! Any other mid-Atlantic folk tired of rain?
Yes!! Totally tired of the rain, and I really like the rain

Back to the Wonder
I had to chuckle a little after reading Colleen's response about the ark, lol. At the time I wrote this we've had 15 days straight of rain here in the Mid-Atlantic region, and I'm starting this portion of the TR with some rain pics
We headed back down the road into the rain. I'm glad there wasn't much traffic as it was now about 4pm. We had given ourselves a nice cushion of time to get back, but any mishap would be stressful.
There's a rainbow, but hard to see. Actually it seems like there are rainbows everywhere and all the time in Hawaii...
Cattle.
I have some of this coffee right now in the pantry! (Got it from Safeway )
Back in town, it took us a little less than an hour. We fueled up, dropped the van off and they rushed us back with plenty of time to spare (like exactly one hour!)
Home sweet home!
Relaxing on the veranda. (Look at the sailboats!)
...and we're off!
The lighthouse
Aircraft coming in.
Island birds sending us off!
Dinner time!
Hawaiian theme tonight
My app, "Ono Crispy Shrimp with Spicy Popcorn" This was pretty good, the popcorn was cute.
For my salad: Green Bean and Potato Salad - with Prosciutto, Chives, Walnuts and a Sherry Vinaigrette. Tasty!
Entree: Hot Pepper Glazed Chicken with Watercress Orzo Pasta "Adventurous!"
The dessert menu. I actually remember that "e komo mai" means welcome!
Sweet Temptation: a trio of Mauka Kea Chocolate Cheesecake, Kukui Panna Cotta, and a Hawaii Vintage Chocolate Mousse. I remember this being very good. I'm totally into any kind of panna cotta these days (Hey! I'm not sure but I think what's plated is not exactly what I quoted from the menu. That doesn't look like chocolate cheesecake to me, but at the time I totally didn't care.)
Remy!
Boo hoo! Sad mail We still had two more days, what gives?! For those who have not (yet) cruised with Disney, you are looking at tip envelopes for our Room Host, Server, Assistant Server, and Head Server. You can pre-pay the tips ahead of time and/or add a little somethin' somethin' into these envelopes at the end of the cruise if you'd like. Otherwise they will add a daily amount to your onboard account. Also included was the all important "survey". Your crew isn't supposed to tell you what to put on there, but usually we've heard them say the word "excellent" several times when they mention it. I don't think it's tallied unless you check "excellent". We are always honest. Unfortunately and maybe stupidly, the food quality part of the survey is tied into the server's ratings. For example if you had bad meals but loved your server, if you mark bad ratings for the food, the servers get bad marks too. (Not fair DCL!)
I think it's a swan
Next - Maui: 9,740 ft up, or, "A Walk in the Clouds"
Nooo.... you can't be getting to the end already. That was a bit mean to put those envelopes out that early. I don't want this to end, as I've been loving reading about Hawai'i especially, it's brought back some great memories from our visit there in 2013.
Dinner looked so yummy! I can see how food quality can be tied to a server if they didn't do everything to fix it and leave you with an overall positive impression. It is unfortunate though since they aren't the ones actually cooking it
