SuperDave's Adventures in Eastern France's Wine Country COMPLETE!! 6/13 - Page 17 - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!
Welcome! We're happy you've found the PassPorter Community -- the friendliest place to plan your vacation to Walt Disney World, Disney Cruise Line, Disneyland, and the world in general! Saturday, May 11-Beaune (Continued) Decided to sleep in a bit today as I know I needed it and would feel good. It did! Got up around 8:30 a.m. or so and went down for some breakfast a while after. Had a bit different today but not much, with orange juice, coffee, croissant, plain yogurt (no fruit yogurt here ) and apple sauce.
Some of those in my group, went to Place Carnot for market day, but I decided to sleep in instead. Would have been good to go to, but probably wouldn't of been able to spend much time there as we were leaving at 10:30 a.m. They said it was good with lots of cheese and other foods, but quite crowded. So, I guess it was ok that I missed it. I just walked around parts of town, I hadn't visited just yet. Unfortunately, I left my camera in my room, so no photos of this. Got to remember to bring it, even on short walks!
After a nice walk in town and a little time spent in the comfy hotel lobby, I went up to my room and got my camera and a few other things I'd need for our next day trip as we'd be leaving around 10:30 a.m. I think it was around 10:15 am. at the time. A couple in our group were a bit late coming downstairs, so we left to walk to our bus at around 10:40 a.m. No big deal as it happens.
We left at about 10:50 a.m. for another wine tasting at the Chateau de Sully, which is in the Beaune area. It took about 40 minutes to reach the chateau and there were plenty of vineyards to see in the ride from Beaune.

Inside the courtyard of the Chateau de Rully along with the Count de Rully, who owns the chateau and lives there with his family.
A couple more nice views inside the courtyard
Some of the vineyards in front of the chateau used for the wines they produce here. They're just a small producer and most are just sold within France.
Love the views of the quaint homes here as well as the rape seed fields. Such beauty!

Next, the Count of Rully brought us inside for a short tour of the chateau. It dates back to the 1600's. We weren't allowed photos in most of the rooms, but I did get a couple. Most of those are where there were paintings as flash photography can age paintings quite a bit. There were a lot of great rooms in the chateau with a lot of historic furniture, paintings and other pieces, including an old billiards table.
The above photo is where we had our wine tasting.
It was a pretty informal tasting here. They produce three wines at the chateau. We tried all three which were a medium bodied Grand Cru red, a Chardonnay and a Pinot Noir. All were quite good! They were accompanied by home made cheese puffs, which were quite delicious! I couldn't get enough of these.
I purchased a book at the chateau that is called "Recipes From The Chateux Of Burgundy". It includes a few from the Chateau de Rully as well. It's a pretty unique book as it's quite regional and well put together. One of the recipes from the Chateau de Rully is for poached eggs in red wine sauce, which I enjoyed in Beaune, just after arriving into town! I may have to give that one a go at some point. The Count of Rully was more than happy to sign the book for us too!
After, the wine tasting there was a bit of free time to walk the grounds, before our picnic lunch here at the chateau. So, I just walked around and took some photos of the chateau and grounds.
Couple of nice views from the chateau and surrounding village.

After, taking in some more of the grounds at the chateau, it was a few minutes walk down a tree line path, whichwas so beautiful and well attended too. Just off the path was where our picnic lunch was. It was put together by our tour director and coach driver Hilde who set it all up. Much of the food was gathered this morning at the market day in Beaune.
When I got there and saw the spread on two tables, everything looked so good. For beverages, there was apple juice, water and some Bourgogne red wine from the Beaune area. Now for food there were various cheeses, including Affinois aux herbes, Compte,(at least one more cheese, which I forget), various meats including Jambon Noir (like a French version of prosciutto), various pates, fruit, veggies and bread of course!
It was all so good and I went back several times to load up again! The wine was good too!
After indulging in so much, it was time for a walk. Took a walk down the path near our picnic area and found another great area, through the woods and the area opened up into a valley, with so many great views.
Can't get enough of the village views like these!
Love the color of the hills in this valley!
It was about 2:15 p.m. and we would be departing back to Beaune at 2:30. But, there was time for more photos of and from the chateau.
View of vineyards and village from in front of chateau.
Front of Chateau de Rully including the vineyards.
Left at 2:30 p.m. from chateau and arrived back in Beaune at about 3:10 p.m. Another busy day with a great tour of the chateau, a nice wine tasting, a tasty picnic lunch and plenty of beautiful views to see from another varied part of France!

Well, instead of resting like I think most of our group did after arriving back at our hotel in Beaune, I decided to walk into town.
Street in Beaune, near my hotel.
Went to visit the Musee du Vin and see the whole museum. It cost about 5 Euros or so. Around $6.50 in U.S. Dollars. The museum wasn't bad, but nothing that great. Just a history of wine making in France and the Burgundy region with various wine producing devices, glasses and goblets through the years. Some of it dating back to the 1600's! Probably, spent about 40 minutes or so here.
Next, I just walked around the city center, visiting various shops and so on.
Local wines on a table at a cafe in Beaune.
Jambon Noir de Bigorre at a charcuterie (delicatessen) in town.
Some of the delicious looking offerings at a local shop.
In the display case at a fromagerie. Most of this is goat cheese and all looks so good.
Had a little incident at the fromagerie (cheese shop) above. I was walking through the shop and looking at all the great food here. I walked past a table, which had wine glasses on it and my jacket caught one of them....and it fell to the floor! One of the employees there swept it up and said something to me in French, which I'm not sure what it was she said. She didn't seem too happy, but I did apologize with a Je desole (I'm sorry). At that point, I think it was time for me to go and visit some where else and stay out of trouble.
Saw this on a sidewalk in the town center. Wasn't expecting this. They're so adorable!
Stopped at a cafe for a bit for an expresso to keep me awake after a long day and I still had a dinner reservation to attend to later. Returned to Hotel des Remparts at a little after 6 p.m.

What a wonderful setting for another wine tasting. The fields are beautiful-- both the vinyards and the beautiful yellow of the rape seed fields.
The setting was amazing and so beautiful. There was a bit of drizzle, when the tables were being set up and our tour director, was concerned about this. This was while we were inside the chateau for the tour and wine tasting. She said it only lasted a few minutes and all was good after that.
There is just so much beauty in this area and France in general. It's amazing how varied the terrain is here and will continue to change on my trip!

What a beautiful chateau! I love all the shots of the shops around Beaune as well. Sometimes the best things to go and visit are the everyday things in a destination.

I love visiting these small town shops in my travels! I'd much rather visit one of these than a big supermarket as these small shops tend to be specialized!
The chateau was quite spectacular as were the views from here and the lovely grounds!

I got back to the hotel at around 6:15 pm or so and a few from my group, were relaxing and enjoying some wine in the lobby. I went upstairs to drop a few things off and get what, I needed to out for dinner, in another hour or so. Jerry, Christina, Nancy and Paul were all enjoying some wine on the comfy chairs in the lobby! I decided to join them in this. Jerry and Christina were drinking 2003 Pommard (Red) from the Beaune area, which they got at the bar in the lobby. I got one for myself and enjoyed it very much as well! We had another glass soon after as it was so enjoyable and had time before my dinner reservation.
Left at about 7:45 pm for the short walk into town for dinner. It's at a restaurant that was recommended to me by my brother and his wife, who were in Beaune in the Fall of 2012, visiting their son, who was studying abroad in Paris for that semester. The three of them did a bit of traveling in the Burgundy region for a few days.
The name of the restaurant is Le P'tit Paradis and is not far from the medieval hospice in town. The restaurant is reviewed very favorably on sites such as Tripadvisor and is the #9 restaurant in the city.
Street sign, where restaurant is located
Love the sign for this restaurant!
I walked inside the restaurant, just before 8 pm and there was no one dining in there as of yet! It's a small restaurant with only about ten tables. Thought it was odd that I was the first to arrive at 8 pm. The woman who had me seated, said they're completely booked for the evening. Within twenty minutes it was full!
It's a real small operation here with one woman seating everyone as well as taking care of all the tables for drinks, food and settling payment. There are two other woman who cook all the meals in the kitchen, which I had a pretty good view of!
My meal started off with complimentary crustini with a small bowl of tuna fish. I enjoyed these and was quite different, than just your normal French bread at the start. I ordered a bottle of house water and a half bottle of 2010 Cote de Beaune red wine, which I enjoyed very much.
The service was very efficient and quick here. Amazing, when you consider, just one woman is handling all ten tables for drinks. orders and food! Some eateries have such slow service and the waiters don't have even have the work that this woman does!
Shortly, my first course arrived and it was very different, but quite flavorful. It was Skate wing Terrine (fish) with a mesculin salad. I did bring my camera this time, but just forgot to take a photo of this. Wish I had! The fish was basically a pate of sorts and so full of flavor!
After, finishing my first course, my host came over to take my plate and pour me some more wine and water. I was very impressed with the great service here! Next, my main course arrived which was a saddle of rabbit, with tomatoes and shell pasta in a red wine sauce.
I loved the rabbit and the sauce is what made this so good! They really like their red wine sauces in Beaune!
Next, came my cheese course with four types of French cheese. I can't recall what they were, but all were very good!
Finally, it was time for dessert, which was quite a treat, My host brought me a chocolate fondant terrine with homemade whipped cream and splinkled with powdered sugar. The chocolate was made with a little chili pepper so when it was in your mouth it would crackle a bit! It was quite an amazing sensation and all I can think of is the movie "Chocolat", which was made in France about ten years ago or so.
I finished off the meal with an espresso and a cognac. A great meal and one of the best I've had on my trip to France! I just took my time and relaxed a bit with my espresso and cognac. The meal wasn't cheap, but well worth it. It was about 76 Euro, which is just under 100 U.S. dollars.
This was a long dinner at over two hours and left the restaurant and walked over to Brasserie Carnot to have another nightcap and relax there a bit and take in the outdoor scenery. Had another espresso and a Grand Marnier.
Left here at around 11:30 or so and returned to Hotel des Remparts for the night.
Got these nice photos of a fountain all lit up near Place Carnot!
Next: Is it possible for the terrain to change this fast?
