Forums Closed
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.

So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.

Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.

And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.

We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.

There are other changes as well.

Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:

We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.

It's time to move on and move forward.

PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.

But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.

So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.

And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.

That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!

If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.

So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

Didn't those Dole Whips look so refreshing?! I really need to get my camera pics downloaded because the dessert menu had I think 6 or more items on it! It was kind of pricey, though...I think the cones were $4+ each, which sounds like more than I pay at DL, although we don't get cones at DL, just a small dish.

I think it would be a really fun thing to try, but do bring a friend or two, because that's a LOT of food to eat! Now that I'm thinking about it, I'm not sure if the size of the meat order is pre-set or if they increase it for more people and then charge you per person. Hmm, I may need to go research that for you...!

Looks like a great dinner! I've never had Korean before, so I was intrigued in the detail about it.

Really? I think you should give it a try. I think Mark would like all the meat selections, and as you can see from the appetizer dishes and the rice noodles, etc., there's also a lot of vegetarian options as well. If you don't try it before then, I'll have to see if there are any good Korean places near DLR for your 40th!

I'm really glad I was able to do most of this as a live TR, and I've actually kept up with doing almost daily updates for the rest of the trip! I started re-reading some of the TR, and it was good to remember a lot of it but I also noticed some things that I've left out. I'll have to do a good recap at the end!

Okay, on with the show!

This was to be Ko Olina and Aloha Swap Meet day! Originally, the plan was to hit the swap meet around 7am and then be at Perri's place by 8:30 (he lives 5 minutes from Aloha Stadium), and then be at Ko Olina by 9 to make sure we got parking. Well, good thing I double checked the Swap Meet website, because it didn't open until 8am and closed at 3pm. The revised schedule was to get to Perri's by 8, Ko Olina by 8:30, have lunch around near Ko Olina, and then be back to the Swap Meet by 12 noon (I know what you're thinking...why is she going to an open air swap meet at 12 noon when the sun is at its hottest?! I think my brain had been fried by that point, lol!)

I think we can all guess that it was very difficult for all of us to wake up at 7am. Evan wakes up fairly quickly, but Sophia was having none of it. We were finally out the door around 7:50am. I set up the navigation on my phone, but I didn't really need it since I had already made the drive to my brother's house the day before and the streets were easy to remember. So, I followed the same route (with the nav confirming my choices), and I got on the freeway at the same spot, well no longer did I get on the freeway that there were white "cones" blocking me from merging on the freeway, and it sent me right off the freeway at the next exit! Luckily, I had the nav on, and it just told me to keep going onto the next freeway entrance. Well, of course, the streets were backed up (it was a Wednesday morning, so it was commuter traffic time). The nav said I still had 500 feet to go, so I thought I had plenty of time and got out of the backed up right lane. Bad move. As soon as I moved left, the nav updated itself, and now the right turn was only 50 feet away! Ugh. Well, I hate people who hold up traffic in their lane trying to squeeze into another lane, so I just decided to keep going straight and not hold up the people behind me.

Of course that choice ended up with my going by street for about 5 miles, lol! At least it was an easy 5 miles, no turns, and the street took me straight onto the freeway where I followed the nav and made it to Perri's house around 8:15, only 15 minutes behind schedule. We got his car loaded up, but Perri said he had to drop off something at a friend's place that was on the way...no big deal...and he had gotten off to a late start as well and hadn't had a chance to go get malasadas for us (like a beignet, but with regular sugar on top instead of powdered sugar). We didn't make it to Ko Olina until about 10am and were worried that we wouldn't find parking.

Here's a picture looking down the hill from Perri's driveway...that's Pearl Harbor in the distance, and you can see the Arizona Memorial just right of center in the picture. I zoomed in as much as I can without making the picture too grainy.

Here are some pictures of the malasadas.

Here's one with a bite so you can see the fluffy yumminess inside!

Once again at this point I failed you all, but only temporarily, because I see that I've taken very few pics of Ko Olina with my phone. I promise to rectify it later on when I finally download my camera pics (there's something wrong with the program on the comp, so it's a manual process that I don't want to mess up and lose all my pics...I promise I'll work on it soon!). Also, Perri had to make some work-related phone calls, so I was driving and neither one of us was able to take pictures along the drive.

There were 4 protected lagoons at Ko Olina...Aulani is at Lagoon 2. There's still quite a bit of construction going on around there, so we set up camp at Lagoon 3...they're all walking distance. Oh, and all my worries about parking? Lagoon 2 parking (tiny lot, maybe 10 spaces) was full, so we drove over to Lagoon 4 (which has probably 50 spaces) and discovered it wasn't even half full.

Seeing all the empty spots, Perri made the decision that we should just go back over to Lagoon 2's parking and just try to wait out a spot there. Minnie (who was home with Baby K) prefers Lagoon 2 to the rest because it has a bit more shade in the area, so she told us we should try to be at Lagoon 2 if possible. Perri took over the wheel, and we zoomed back over to Lagoon 2. Lucky us, this time there was one open spot! Hurray!!!

I know I took some pics of Aulani at this point, but they're on my camera. I promise I won't forget!

When we got out of the car, we saw and heard all the construction going on, so we decided to walk over to Lagoon 3. There was still some construction that spilled over to the Lagoon 3 area, but it wasn't too bad, so we just found a shady spot on the grass and set up camp there. Here's the view from where we sat.

Looking back towards Lagoon 2...the white building is the Marriott, I believe....behind the slope on the right side of the picture is where Aulani is.

That's Perri, Baby D (in Perri's arms), Sophia and Evan playing in the water:

You can see the breakwaters in the picture that make the lagoon so protected and perfect for kids. All 4 lagoons are like that. We only spent about an hour there and decided that the heat was getting to us. We packed up and drove one exit back towards Honolulu. This was the town of Kapolei, and I'm glad we stopped here because I learned a helpful hint for Aulani visitors. Perri says it's a growing town, and right near the freeway exit was plenty of shopping perfect for people staying at Aulani (I'm assuming most people will have rental cars because it's a good 30 minutes from the airport). There was a gas station and a large strip mall with plenty of restaurants, market, shopping. I would assume this place will get plenty of business from Ko Olina visitors.

Perri got lunch from a counter service type place to bring back to Minnie. Sophia couldn't decide what she wanted. I took Evan to a Boston style pizza place (wish you were there with me, Laurie, to tell me if it really was Boston style!) to get pepperoni pizza. Funny story here...when I ordered the pizza, I asked for 2 slices figuring Evan would probably polish off most of that. I wasn't paying attention until the next person ordered 1 slice and saw that 1 slice was 1 quarter of an extra large pizza...in other words, it was the size of 2 slices! Well, I figured I'd just save the rest since the guy had already put my "slices" in the oven to heat up. And as it turned out, Evan ate a slice (regular size slice, lol!) while we were waiting for Perri. Sophia ate the other "regular" size slice. I saved the other "giant slice" for later, and of course as we were driving to the swap meet, the kids ate the rest of the pizza.

Anyhow, by the time we got back to Perri's house, it was 1pm. I guess everything took longer than we expected. Minnie was a tad mad at Perri because she was starving, lol, but in Perri's defense, we really didn't dawdle anywhere along the way...everything just took longer than we expected. I was wilting pretty bad because we had been outdoors all day, and even in the shade the heat and humidity were getting to me. I'd say temps were about 90 and humidity felt almost as high (but probably more like 70-80%)!

Next update will be the swap meet and dinner! Stay tuned!

The beach near Aulani looks beautiful! How close is Kapolei to Aulani? I bet the town does grow after Aulani opens. Disney people are shopping people! Hope your "Boston style" pizza was good-- honestly, I have no idea what distinguishes Boston style from NY. It's a medium, crispy/chewy crust usually with a chunky tomato sauce. I'm making myself hungry! Those donut-things look amazing. I did some research and there's a Korean restaurant described as "authentic", "not Americanized" within walking distance of where I live, so I guess I'll be trying it soon!

I can't wait to see your Aulani photos, but the photos you've already posted look beautiful - that sea is so blue!

And I am seriously jealous of the view from Perri's driveway - wow!

Kapolei isn't within walking distance. It's the next freeway exit south of Ko Olina (in other words, heading back towards Honolulu), probably about 2 miles between exits. It's already a suburb type town, but I imagine it will grow quickly with the new employment at Aulani. The Marriott properties have already been there a while, so I imagine those vacationers have made good use of Kapolei.

I wish I had thought to take pictures of the kids eating their pizza, but my brain was honestly mush by then. I don't remember the sauce being chunky tomatoes. It was good pizza, but I couldn't tell that it was any different from other thin crust pizza that I've had before.

Please do report back after you try the Korean place! I know that BBQ is just one type of Korean meal. Minnie's family has taken us to Korean restaurants where we got lots of stews in hot pots. It's a really tasty cuisine!

Yeah, it's amazing how beautiful the water is everywhere we went in Hawaii. Perri does indeed have a gorgeous view, and it doesn't hurt that he lives on a hill that overlooks such beautiful scenery!

The Marriott you see in those photos is the JW Marriott Ko Olina! I'm going to try for a split stay with my Marriott employee rate and my DVC points sometime soon!

Now I REAAAAAAALLY want to go to Hawaii. And I can't say enough how much I love that airport! It looks awesome!
I was wondering where you've been! The Kona Keahole Airport really is quaint, isn't it? I think I got a picture of the Honolulu Airport on my camera...and you'll see that it pretty much looks like any ol' big city airport, lol! I much prefer Kona!

I really hope you can make it there soon. It looks like a really nice (and really huge) property. It looks like there are two large buildings that comprise the resort. The lagoons are all beautiful, and they're definitely doing a lot of construction/refurbishment in that area. I used to wonder about the "isolation" of the Ko Olina area, but now that I've discovered Kapolei right next store, I think everything you need is pretty much there. The only thing you have to plan for is to drive a ways back into town (Honolulu/Waikiki) or to other parts of the island.

That it be! I hope you can do it. I think there are two Marriott properties there, right? One is a hotel and one is a timeshare complex? It would be a great place to stay, especially with your employee rate!

Swap Meet and Dinner on Wednesday, Day 10

We stopped only briefly at Perri's house for the kids to rinse off from Ko Olina. Then we quickly got into the car and drove to Aloha Stadium for their Swap Meet which is held every Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday unless there's an event going on at the stadium. This is the stadium where the NFL has it's annual Pro Bowl.

It was already 1:30pm by the time we headed to the swap meet. To get in, it's $1 per adult over 12...only $1 for us to get in since the kids are under 12!

This swap meet is fun, but once again it's in the open so we were treated to more blazing sunshine! A lot of the booths/tents are the same...souvenir t-shirts, beach towels, woodcrafts, handmade jewelry, Hawaiian knick knacks and bags. Sophia was on a mission to buy some gifts for her friends back home. Of course she was also on the lookout for gifts for herself! She bought some puka shell necklaces for her friends, some shell bracelets for herself, and some dried starfish for one of her friends who has an ocean themed room.

I was on the lookout for a t-shirt for my mom that she requested...she wanted one with the Hawaiian state fish on it, the humuhumunukunukuapua'a fish. It's a colorful fish with a colorful name! Unfortunately, I didn't find one. I did find some beach blankets that I liked, one of which I was hoping to give to our neighbor who was collecting our mail and keeping an eye on our house for us. I also wanted to get a crossover purse of some type. I saw some cute ones, but the straps were so thin (about 3/4 inch) that I knew they'd cut into my shoulder after a while. I then saw some that had an inch wide strap so I picked up a cute pink and black design and bought it for $8. I probably should've paid less for it, but by then, I was feeling so icky that I just wanted to get out of there.

Just to give you an idea of the prices, t-shirts were in the $5-8 range, the necklaces and bracelets were in the $0.75-3 range, the beach blankets we got were 3 for $20. You can sometimes haggle with the vendors, but I was so tired and hot that I just wasn't in the mood for it. I just wanted to buy and get out of there.

We were at the swap meet for almost an hour and probably saw only about 1/4 of the whole thing. The meet literally circles the entire stadium, so you can just imagine how big it is. Around 2:30 some of the vendors started taking down their tents, so that was our cue to skedaddle. The swap meet closes at 3pm.

Here's a view of some vendors. That's Evan standing in the front with a cold water bottle that we swiped from Perri's house

Soon after we arrived at the swap meet, we saw a shave ice vendor, so we made a beeline there and got ourselves a blue raspberry/strawberry one..sorry it's out of focus.

The shave ice was good, but more like a snow cone. "Real" shave ice is almost like eating powder snow. It's so yummy! There are some great shave ice places in North Shore, but we didn't go there this time. Minnie told us there was one near Waikiki called Waiola, but we never made it there this trip. Put it on the list for next time!

Around this time I knew I wasn't going to make it through the rest of the day. I really wanted to make sure Sophia got to do what she wanted because the last time were on Oahu we spent so much of our time doing family things after family things after family things that we didn't have much time to ourselves. I promised Sophia that this time we'd be sure to get through all of her must-do list.

Today, we had to do Ko Olina and Swap Meet, and she really wanted to go back to Eggs 'n Things for dinner (gotta love breakfast for dinner!). I was stressed about making it to Ko Olina in time to find parking (as it turned out, no problem), and then stressed to make it to the swap meet before they closed (again, as it turned out, no problem). Now we just needed to make it to Eggs 'n Things by 5pm so that we didn't have to wait 2 hours for our meal again!

At this point, the heat was really taking a toll on me, and I stupidly hadn't eaten anything since the 2 malasadas around 10:30am. I had a raging neck and shoulder ache at this point. We got into the car and decided to drive back to our hotel. We made it there around 3:30pm. All I wanted to do was get into our air conditioned room, take a Motrin, and lie down. I think we looked briefly in a few shops between the parking structure and our room, but we finally made it to our room. I gave the kids some snacks to hold us over until dinner. I took a quick shower to cool myself off and then plopped myself on the bed for a while. I needed that SO bad, and after about an hour, I was feeling better.

Our next mission was to walk over to Eggs n' Things (about a 15 minute walk). We left our room on time, about 4:45, and took a slow walk over to the restaurant. About halfway there, Evan started to have a meltdown because he didn't want to walk anymore and wanted to return to the room (we really had been moving around a lot the last few days and didn't have much downtime, so I wasn't surprised). Sophia then started to have a meltdown because she was upset that she might not make it to Eggs 'n Things, and I of course was still dealing with my head and shoulder ache (although I was feeling a bit better than earlier in the day, thank goodness) so I was on the brink of a meltdown myself. Finally, I bribed Evan with some of his favorite fruit snacks, got Sophia calmed down, and we continued our walk to the restaurant. When we were within sight of the restaurant...we saw about 10 people milling about the sidewalk...what?! How can there already be a wait?! We sped up and walked up to the downstairs check-in. We got a pager and were told it would be about 10-15 minutes. Ugh, we were hoping to walk right in since they opened for dinner at 5 and we arrived at 5...but 10-15 minutes is better than 2 hours!

Thankfully, the wait was only 10 minutes. The host who took us to our table remembered us from the morning before and welcomed us back with a big smile! We sat down, and this time our server was Joshua. He was really nice and prompt. Sophia decided to go with the silver dollar panckaes, which is 6 pancakes piled with gobs of whipped cream and then different toppings. I remember chocolate chip, kiwi, sprinkles, blueberries, pineapple, and I think banana and strawberry. I almost forgot to take a picture, but here's one with 4 left on the plate

We also ordered a side of vienna sausages (they were a little bigger than the canned ones) and a side of Spam (Sophia loves her Spam!). I just asked for lots and lots of cold water to drink. Sophia had a milk and Evan had a large fresh orange juice. They promptly gulped those down, so I ordered another round for them. Dinner came out to just over $40 (mostly because each drink was $4+) before tip. Sophia was very happy, which made me very happy.

Evan was very ready to return to the room at this point, so we started our trek back. I had wanted to drive over to WalMart to check out their souvenir section (tip: most WalMarts in Hawaii have what I call a tourist section where they sell t-shirts, stickers, chocolates, and other typical Hawaiian souvenirs). We've gotten some great t-shirts and other souvenirs there in the past, so I was hoping to finally get my mom her shirt as well as shirts for Evan and Sophia (they also wanted the fish shirt my mom wanted). I don't remember if I had mentioned checking out a Walmart on the Big Island, but I did and they didn't have the shirt there. Anyhow, I was still not feeling that great, so after checking out some more of our resort, we returned to our room around 7. I pretty much got into bed and stayed there the rest of the night. Sophia amused herself for a while looking at her swap meet purchases, and Evan had fun playing Angry Birds on my laptop. I didn't check to see how much internet was the resort, but I had already decided that we really didn't need to be spending any more money on this trip, lol! There was also a game console attached to our tv, and although Evan really wanted to play, I told him that we had plenty to keep ourselves amused in our room, and he was a good boy and listened to Mommy.

Thus ends Day 10. Sophia's must-do list was completed. Evan was content in the room. I still had to find t-shirts for my mom and the kids. We wanted to get some cookies at Honolulu Cookie Company (luckily there was a store in our resort) for Evan's aides at school, Sophia's skating coach, and ourselves...that would need to be crossed off on our last day. Our flight doesn't leave until 9:40pm the next day, so we still had plenty of time to get it done...right?
