As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.

Uh oh, Melissa has some competition. This year I felt that Pinocchio looked the best on my Christmas tree so I love seeing of him, why is it that he's so popular in Europe? And what is Hot Win? You look so cute in your winter gear, did you get to wear your pink Eeyore sweater? Great update!
Strange you should say that about the pink Eeyore sweater - yes, I did wear that!
And as for Pinocchio, I have no idea why he's so popular - I've wondered that as well.
Saturday 20 December – part seven: “do you want to go round a second time?”
We wandered around more of the park, getting more night-time shots. It’s a lot nicer after dark here.
Eventually food was calling us. Having decided that we weren’t going to go to the California Grill, we still needed a little something to keep us going, so we headed into Studio 1, which is home to most of the park’s counter service places. I got a three cheese salad, which was excellent, while Mark got a meal deal, with burger, fries and a beer. I don’t think his was as good as mine.
That done, we walked out, stopping to do some shopping on the way out, getting some Christmas ornaments for ourselves and Sabine and Manuel and a top for me. The price of the merchandise wasn’t bad here. It’s just the food prices that are a bit outrageous. In fact, that selection of merchandise again out-did Florida. OK, so we saw some items that we were the same as when we were last here in January, but there was also a lot of new stuff and sadly that’s something you can’t say about Walt Disney World these days.
We headed into the Disneyland Park.
Their night-time parade Fantillusion, their equivalent of SpectroMagic, was still going on. The crowds were about seven or eight deep, but we managed to get a couple of shots of the floats we saw.
The beauty about the parade was that it meant that the rest of the park was deserted. We walked up the arcade behind Main Street and saw almost no-one else there. That continued when we got into Frontierland.
Then I figured that we had a good chance to get on the Haunted Mansion and indeed we did. It was a walk on. While we were outside, I decided to get some night-time shots of the castle and put my camera down on a railing to give it some stability. As I did, I thought I felt someone standing next to me, but I assumed it was Mark. No, it was one of the Haunted Mansion Cast Members, but he didn’t scare me at all, which I think disappointed him.
We noticed, as we went thought, that there was no narration. Now whether it wasn’t working or whether they’ve done away with it, as it was previously all in French, I don’t know. Still, it was just as good without it. The graveyard part, in particular, is great and all based around the Wild West theme, as the Haunted Mansion here is located in Frontierland.
We came out of there and headed next to Adventureland and again Pirates of the Caribbean was a walk on. My goodness, it’s one long walk to get to the boats. You only realise that when you don’t have a line to stand in. We ended up in a boat with a family of five from the UK and almost the first words to us were “do you want to go around for a second time, because we’re going to ask if we can”. Well, we were up for that, so after one sailing round, we all sat there and refused to move when we got back to the dock and the Cast Member quickly got the message and send us on our way for a second time around. This is so much fun and I love the way that it’s on two levels of the building, very much like the one in Disneyland in California. The only shame is that it never got the rehab that the American ones got a couple of years ago, so there’s no Captain Jack Sparrow or Davy Jones in these versions.
When we came off the second time, it was just after 10.00, so we started to slowly head out of the park. We stopped to take lots of photos of the castle, which had the ice effect first tried in Walt Disney World and looked stunning.
Main Street wasn’t full of Christmas decorations as we’re used to in Florida, but it was still nice all the same.
By the time we made it to the exit of the park, it was probably about 10.30. On the way, we stopped for a hot wine at the Christmas market huts. That was very nice and just what we needed.
Then it was off to the station and back on the train and back to the hotel.
The weather today was dry, but cloudy, with temperatures in the 40’s. The best thing today was celebrating my birthday at the Blue Lagoon. The worst thing today was how crowded the parks were during the day. The funniest thing today was becoming Stitch’s girlfriend. Today I tried Crush’s Coaster And the result was I’m glad I did it once, but never again. : The most magical moment today was my cake coming out at the Blue Lagoon.
Next: how long are we going to stand in line today?
Aw, Cheryl, the Studios park does look much prettier at night! I noticed that in one of your pictures, the wait for Crush's Coaster is still 55 minutes, despite the fact that the park seemed fairly quiet. Your castle pics are gorgious! I love the ice castle look.

I your night time photos. I wasn't crazy about the pink castle, but it looks Amazing at night with the ice effect!! And I really like the pic you took looking down main street toward the tree with all of the lights and banners lining the street. It looked like it went on forever.
But, I must say out of all of the pictures...I loved the pic of the 3 chees salad the best. I Totally want one for lunch. Do you think they deliver to New Jersey??
As everyone else has said, your night time photos of the park make it look so much more magical. It could be because of the gray over cast day. How funny about the hot win. I wondered about it too.

Those are fantastic photos!! It's a completley different look at nighttime vs. daytime. Especially with all the Christmas lights, they look beautiful! I agree with you about the merchandise at WDW in Florida. It hasn't been as exciting these last few years. I'm glad you accomplished some great shopping while you were there! Also happy to hear you got on those last 2 rides as well! Sometimes it pays to skip the parade!!
