A Christmas Ship Comes Sailing In (A Cam and Luke TR) Completed 2/18 - Page 12 - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Sorry you didn't love Key West too much, but sounds like you got a lovely walk in! We did the Butterfly House and loved it and just loved the atmosphere of walking around there.
Our walk was nice, and I did love looking at the Banyan trees.

I'm so glad it wasn't hot as we did walk a lot that day. We saw the chocolate covered key lime pie on a stick, and wondered about it. Then at dinner one of our tablemates told us they had one and loved it.

At least we learned just how well Disney did in designing Old Key West.
Sounded like a perfectly fine day. I would like to try this cruise at least once because I would like to visit Key West once. I really want to try that Key Lime pie! (oh and see the southern most point in the US) Maybe, like you said, if you had done a "true excursion"? But I think your day sounded absolutely wonderful.
We just weren't into the whole touristy portion of the town, which is where the ship docks. But when I think about some of the areas we walked through there are many interesting homes. I'm not sure what we were expecting of Key West, but the real didn't jive with the imagined.

Doing it once was okay, but we just don't feel the need to return.
I guess I won't go out of my way to stop in Key West! I especially don't think it sounds like a place to visit with young children. Although they do like pie... It at least looks like there was a bit of scenery while you walked around. And the weather looked fairly decent. Now you can say you've been. That's part of the point to going someplace right?
Sorry that you were disappointed in Key West I've heard mixed reviews from others and I would probably have felt the same way as you if you felt it was a tourist trap. Looking forward to hearing about your evening aboard ship!

Sorry you didn't enjoy Key West that much. I haven't been there in years. We used to drive down from Ft. Lauderdale and spend the day wandering around and then drive home to Ft, Lauderdale. We enjoyed Hemmingway's house and visiting all his cats. Thanks to those trips we ended up with 2 cats with extra toes. It is a little touristy, but we enjoyed it back then.

No one knows if they'll like a place or not unless they visit. We did that and now we know.

It just seemed that so much of the entertainment in Key West was shopping, and that wasn't what we were interested in.

I really wish I hadn't misread the map so that we might have managed a visit to Hemingway's home.
A little after 5:00, we started getting ready for dinner. We arrived at Animator’s Palette around 5:40, which was five minutes early. A line had formed as other had also come early, too. Exactly at 5:45, we were escorted inside to Table 3. We were the fist of our group to arrive. The fourth couple to complete our table was there tonight, and as I had guessed, Tom and Louise were at Palo for dinner last night.
Each night Agus would ask if we had any questions after allowing us a moment to peruse the menu. Tonight I did have one, and when I told him I didn’t want to show my ignorance, he came around to my chair. My question: “What are the truffles?” Some back story: quite a few years ago a friend and I had gotten into a debate about what truffles were. I had said they were a type of mushroom, but she swore they were snails. Now back to dinner and Agus answer, he confirmed that they were mushroom. I let him know that would be wonderful as I love mushrooms, and that I had just not wanted snails. He told me snails could be very good, and he could even order me some if I wanted. I replied with a simple, “No, thanks.” You all will probably get tired of my gushing over our wait staff, but both Agus and Servet were the finest.
This meal was probably among my top two for the entire cruise, but again no food photos. Bread service tonight was Garlic and Herb Foccacia Bread, which I love. For appetizers, I selected the Black Truffle Pasta Purseittes and Luke opted for the Tomato Tarte with glazed goat cheese and radish salad that looked like a mini pizza. Luke has only recently discovered that he likes goat cheese, so the minute he noted this ingredient he had to try it. Back to my Black Truffle Pasta Purseittes. As the name sounds these were little pastas that looked very much like little tiny drawstring purses. The pasta was filled with truffles scented cheese and coated in a champagne sauce. Easily my favorite part of this meal. Perfection!
For our soup/salad course, we both chose Baked Potato and Cheddar Cheese Soup with bacon bits and chives. Very tasty! Soup was followed by the main course where Luke picked the Ginger-Teriyaki dusted Angus Beef Tenderloin with Wasabi mashed potatoes and a Bok Choy and Tamarind Barbeque Reduction. He loved it! I selected the Herb Crusted Veal Chop (Roast veal chop crusted with Dijon mustard and crusted with herbed bread crumbs with sun-dried tomato risotto and a Barolo wine sauce. Very, very good! The meal finished with dessert. Luke began a theme tonight of selecting whatever ice cream treat was on the menu, getting the Cookies ‘n Cream Sundae (chocolate sauce and chocolate chip cookies). I do love chocolate so that is my constant theme. I had the Duo Chocolate Cake, which was very similar to the chocolate mousse of the night before.
Our table tonight was full of friendly conversation. So much so that we were some of the last to leave. As we were leaving, Luke mentioned we should have gotten our photo made with the Animator’s Palette sign. So after a quick bio break, we headed back to asked Servet to take our picture. Unfortunately, when he handed the camera back for us to check we learned that the memory card was not in it. Bummer! I had left it in the computer after downloading the pictures from earlier in the day.
Now we needed to return to the room to retrieve the memory card. Servet promised he would take care of the photo on our next Animator’s Palette night. We trekked to our stateroom. At the door I realized that my sweater was now missing. Luke went inside to take care of the memory card while I back tracked to find my sweater. It was laying on the floor beside a host/hostess cart. With all our lost things found, we could not move on to new adventures.
We walked down to Deck 4 to see if a photographer was out. There was, but once on Deck 3, we discovered a long line. We decided to try again later as it was about 40 minutes until show time. So it was back up to Deck 4. Peter Pan and Captain Hook were holding a meet and greet in front of the theater with a very long line wrapping around the front. We found a much shorter line of folks waiting to enter the theater. We joined it, but only had to wait five minutes before we entered to find seats. Since we were early tonight, we were able to choose seats closer to the front and middle. Tonight’s show was Lynn Trefzger again, but she had an hour to regal us with puppets Chloe, Bear, and even members of the audience. She is an exceptionally talented and funny lady. Luke and I spent most of the hour laughing.
Afterwards, I wanted to return to White Caps for the Pandora bracelet and three Chamilia charms. Everywhere in Disneydom seems to be out of the new Pandora charms. I got the sterling silver Pandora bracelet plus a Disney cruise ship charm, a Magic DCL postcard charm, and a sparkly Tinker Bell charm (the last one the Magic had or would ever have). Chamilia will only be available until what supplies are left have run out. The CM helping me mentioned that Pandora charms for the ships are backordered until February. Side note: My dad and sister gave me money for Christmas. While we were shopping in Evansville the day after Christmas, we discovered a brand new Pandora store in the mall. I went in and asked if they had any Disney charms, actually expecting a no answer. Wrong, they had some, not all, and the selection was fairly good. I picked out a colored Mickey head that is so cute. The sales clerk also told me that Pandora had clip charms that worked on my particular bracelet to hold the charms in place. So rather than another Disney charm, I purchased two of these. That brought my total to a magic number that entitled me to a free charm from a select group. I chose a Pave bead worth $65. Not a bad deal at all. The sales clerk could tell that I’d like to have had another Disney charm, so as I checked out, she reminded Luke that a charm would be the perfect Valentine’s gift.
With my purchase made, we checked the atrium to see if the photographer was still there. She was so we went down to Deck 3. She was working with three kids, and then it would be our turn. She first took sitting poses. With my arthritis, I was a little concerned that I’d have a hard time getting back up, especially in a dress. But I did make it up for the standing poses without much trouble.
With our photo shoot finished, we returned to the stateroom to pick up our DVC Tervis tumblers, and then left to fill the tumblers at the Drink Station on Deck 9. On the elevator ride, we decided to also get ice cream cones (chocolate for me and a twist for Luke). With our refills and cones in hand, we retired to the stateroom for the night. We had a very cute towel critter guarding our bed. Before getting too comfy, we spent a few moments enjoying night in the ocean from our verandah. Ready for bed, I took notes and Luke watched Monday Night Football. He fell asleep before the game was over. I wrote for a wee bit longer, and then I turned off the TV and entered dreamland, too.
One last look at Key West.
Final steps total = 12, 009
NEXT: Verandah time, Launderette time, and just lounging
I noticed you said you took a trolley to Mallery Square. When I cruised to Key West many years ago we docked right there. Is there no longer docks there? or did they just add more and you were docked at a newer one?
I hav enjoyed KW but every time I have gone it has been so stinking hot. It is a party town so if you like to bar hop thats very popular there. I was last there with Skip when we sailed NCL and we did a few different things and I think we may have snorkeled there too.

We were quite a distance from the town itself. Having never been there before, I'm not familiar with the docks. But we could have been at a new.
Sounds like a great night! I have a love/hate with truffles. While I really dislike shaved truffles , I don't mind a truffle oil drizzle. Weird, I know.
Happy for you on the Pandora purchases, our Magic sailing doing the TA they didn't have any, and I was bummed about that.
Can't wait to see your pics from the photo shoot tonight.
