Welcome to "Fireside" book club!!!!!!!!!!!! - Page 12 - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Time to share a little book related trivia about me.
THe first real book I ever read cover to cover was called Kate and the Apple Tree. I remember how thrilled I was when I closed the cover and I knew I'd just read a REAL book. Especially one where Dick and Jane did not see Spot run once!
Well, I just went to the store and bought my first pair of reading glasses after my Zazu/Zuzu mistake. SOOOOOOOO, it seems that Fireside was the first book I ever read using glasses. I can't believe how fuzzy my vision was without really knowing it! I always thought my eyes were sharp, but I failed the Zazu test. (sigh)
In chapter 20, Bo discusses how some ballplayers are so busy looking ahead to the next move that they forget where they are. That made me wonder, how many times have I missed a moment because I was busy looking to the next moment? Bo talks about the silver lining to having to wait so long to make the Yankees team- that he quit focusing on getting there and started asking how he can live his life in the here and now.
I wonder if anyone has any thoughts on that? I'm starting to wonder how clear I've been seeing things OR what I've missed in the event that I've failed to admit that I needed a different pair of glasses!

I really liked this statement of Bo's. I know I have the habit of looking into the future and sometimes missing treasures of the present. Or even getting so caught up in one aspect of the present that I miss something going on in another area of life. I sometimes have to take a step back and refocus on what is really important to me.

My DH told me once - this is how we used to tour WDW. We wanted to ride every ride and see every show that we didn't stop and soak it all in. He's much happier about Dtrips since we started going with the flow. It has opened my eyes to what's behind the magic. I watching the cms interact with each other...with guests. I walking around the resorts to see what's different -- what hidden treasures can be found. It is amazing what excites us when we take the time to experience the here and now instead of thinking of what is to come.

I spent a bit of time doing just that.
Years ago, I came across a rectangular rock that is reddish in color, but has imbedded bands of white rock that formed in the shape of a perfect cross. It must have been crushed as the earth shifted in two different directions. Well, I've been braiding the young trunks of a hibiscus tree around it for a couple years. It is finally to the point where it needs no more string to hold it in place. I also managed to find a round rock that has a very nice yin and yang in it. THis one was more subtle, and seemed to be a combination of white sand and black sand. The rocks must have must have fused together over a period of time that I can't even begin to imagine.
Well, Today I braided the Yin and Yang into the same tree as the cross. I stood back and just looked at the amazing rocks. In a few years, the branches will almost be a part of the rocks (or visa versa, depending on how you look at it). I'm not even sure if I will be around when the branches close in to hold the rocks securely, but it was cool to see it in that moment. THe rocks were the past and the young tree trunks were the future and I was the moment that kind-of brought them together. IT was a very timeless and beautiful moment for me and I won't spoil it with too many words now.

This is why I really try to go back at least once a year. I don't get that "sad" let down at the end of the vacation, and I don't worry if an attraction is closed or I can't get ressies in my favorite restaurant. There is always the next trip! When I go, I often spend alot of time just sitting and people watching or taking in the atmosphere.

Morning and Happy Friday - Sorry I haven't been posting I got sucked into another good book. I See You Everywhere by Julia Glass. I will skim back through Fireside and be prepared to discuss the ending.
O.K., I better get busy, I'm on chp 23, so I know what I'll be doing tonight! I spent entirely too much time on the boards this week, & not enough reading.
I ran into a woman that worked at my school (she retired in June) while at the gym yesterday, and we had a long chat. I thought of our conversation after reading Dorie's post about commando touring!! She was in WDW with her DH, DD, & DSIL early January. Her DD took control of the touring. They had 4 days, and so of course we talked about her trip!!! Her DD had them comando touring, by the 4th day her DH said he wasn't going, he'd had enough. But what she said was they ran from 1 thing to the next, she kept her eye's on DD leading the way & didn't notice anything around her. They didn't even stop for lunch, just pulled granola bars out to eat enroute. I said, that's too bad you didn't get to try any WDW restaurants. She said she didn't see any, and so thought there weren't many.
They were so focused on what they were doing next, that they didn't get a chance to enjoy the moment. Soak in the atmosphere, or anything. I felt sad, she surely missed "the treasures of the moment."
It's so easy in our rushed and busy lives to overlook the moment we're in, cause we're worried about what we have to get done tomorrow. And we let today slip by.
I loved the ending but won't say anything until I'm sure everyone has finished, as I don't see any posts about it yet.
Spring Break is over for me, back to work tomorrow

I loved the drama and the suspense that came to the ending, but the ending itself seemed a little too "simple" somehow. I'm waiting to be sure everyone else has finished, and I don't want to give it away, so I hesitate to discuss it more at the moment!

I had the same feeling. Just a little to "neat" if you ask me
To me, the ending left unresolved issues, and is screaming for another sequel. What's going to happen to AJ? Is he going back to his mother or staying with Bo and Kim? How will he fit into their marriage? And what about AJ's mother Yolanda? Can she find a way to stay in this country or will she be permanently deported? With AJ, Bo, and Kim gone, how is Kim's mother's house? I'd love to read more about these characters.
