Back to boating on the Broads TRIP REPORT COMPLETED 6/5 - Page 11 - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Lunch looked delicious! I chuckled over the receipt, though....was your server Morgan Freeman?!
I did wonder if anyone would notice that! We looked at it and immediately looked at each other and we were like "what?" No, I can categorically say he looked nothing like the real Mr. Freeman...

What a great find for lunch! Glad it worked out so you could enjoy it. It all looked just as delicious as your descriptions.
I think you're supposed to walk slowly after eating, so.... well done.

Looked like a great lunch as the food and service seemed so good! I love the use of the cork...quite clever! That is quite funny with your check and the name of your server! One of my favorite actors and glad you didn't get the menu from "Shawshank Redemption" as I know you would never take a bite if it appeared!

Sunday 3 May – part five: are we ever going to get off the riverbank?
When we got back to the river, there were various sailboats out, some of whom seemed to be having fun, and others who seemed to be firmly in the reeds.
We did see this near miss though…
When we made it back to the boat, we discussed where to head to for the night. We’d been talking about Reedham or the Reedham ferry a little further along the river. I don’t think either of us were overly enamoured with either option, so we had a look at the map and Mark suggested we go further along, and stop the night at Rockland St. Mary, as that appeared to have both mooring and a pub, and TripAdvisor suggested it was a fairly decent pub, so I agreed. It would put us further along the river for getting to Norwich tomorrow, whereas from Reedham, it would be a four hour trip.
As it was already coming up for 2:30pm, we figured we’d better get back on the waterway, but after our easy mooring, we were a bit complacent, as it wasn’t that easy to get off the riverbank after all. The wind was blowing us back into the bank, and again a kind guy came to help us, and explain what he needed to do. He kept saying that someone needed to push off from the back, so that’s what I was trying to do, but in the end, he pushed us off from the front and ensured that the back of the boat was far enough out so that we could get into the centre of the river. What we would do without these people, I really do not know.
The difference in the weather was just astounding, and I swear that we saw so much more than we had on the way here, as it was now a lot clearer.
There were some beautiful properties along this stretch of the river…
Soon we were back at the other former railway bridge, and this time we could see more clearly what we both thought was the former signal box…
We saw some pretty large vessels now out on the water…
… although the ones we had the most issues with were the idiots who had just hired a boat for the day. We had one which literally weaved its way across the river from one side to the other, just zig zagging around, instead of keeping to one side, as you’re supposed to do. Mark really had no way to go, and in this section of river, there were poles along the side, and you can guess what happened. Yep, we scraped along them, although there was no damage to the boat, just the floats on the side. They all cheerfully waved at us as they passed by, and we just glared at them. Had it not been for the fact that there were kids on there (I suspect someone was probably showing off to the kids), they’d have got a different return sign from us.
It was about now that we started to see some more wildlife again, obviously all coming out now that the weather was kinder. First we had seagulls sitting on the top of those posts – and yes, that’s an example of the one we scraped by.
There was some swan fighting in the distance, but unfortunately I wasn’t able to capture that. By the time I was able to zoom in, peace had returned…
Then we had various processions of geese, at times, in perfect lines, which was fascinating to see. I know that’s how they fly, but I didn’t know that’s how they were in the water as well.
Glad you didn't do more damage scraping the posts, thanks to the idiots in the other boat! Some people.....
I know swans mate for life, and your picture shows three swans. Wonder if the fight was over a female swan?
English geese are so much cuter than American (Canadian actually) geese!

The near sailboat accident looked scary, yikes!
We have a lot of lakes around here and we get a lot of the stupid boaters too. I just don't know what they're thinking sometimes.
So glad the weather is cooperating again and you're able to see more - those houses, wow!
And I agree - English geese are much cuter than the Canadian ones!

I know.

That's a good point, I'd forgotten about them mating for life.

They're certainly very different. I've never forgotten being in Vancouver and the guide asking us if we liked Canadian geese. A few people said and his next words were "well, can you please take the darned things home with you, because we sure as hell don't want them!"

They're probably not thinking at all....

I know it has been raining and there have been some issues here and there, but I am loving this trip you were on!
In fairness, we know to expect rain whenever we vacation here, it's an occupational hazard of living here. And it's a standing joke that whenever we have a Bank Holiday weekend like this, it's going to rain, so it was no surprise - and the forecast at one point was saying heavy rain for all three days of our boating.

Everything is just so pretty...the birds, the landscape...love the windmill!! You really travel to some beautiful places!!
Thank you so much - and that's so nice to hear and humbling in a way too, given it's our country and just a relatively short distance from where we live.
