SuperDave's Adventures in Eastern France's Wine Country COMPLETE!! 6/13 - Page 11 - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

After taking in views of the Alsace region below Chateau du Haut-Koenigsbourg, our guided tour began at around 9:30 a.m. The Chateau was constructed during the 12th century and was abandoned in 1633 after numerous wars and conflicts from within Europe and between monarchs and other rivals. This was because of the 30 Years War with the Swedes, who burnt the castle to the ground, It was left abandoned for over 200 years.
The castle was completely restored from 1900-08 by Wilhelm II as during this time the Alsace region was German territory and he was very fond of the castle and thought it would add a significant piece and symbol to his empire at the time. So this is just a brief overview of the castle and a few photos below will show how beautiful this castle is.
Quite a unique chandelier with different animal skulls and bones. Certainly, would remind you of being from the Middle Ages in Europe.
One of the dining rooms in the chateau.
Quite a unique piece of furniture. Forget the name of this.
Nice views from outside of the Chateau du Haut-Koenigsbourg
Nice closeup of the windmill. I think I want one of these at my house! Not sure, if my neighbors would appreciate it like I would!

After our tour, I went to a small cafe they have outside the castle and had a croissant and a grand cafe (no milk as I'm in France) as I ran short of time for breakfast earlier.
I was quite amazed by the views of the Alsace from nearly 2,500 feet above. What a great perspective and way to see this region. Here are a couple more from up here in the Voges Mountains of the Alsace.
After some time for a little breakfast and a few photos, we left for our next destination of Kaysersberg in the Alsace at around 11:15 a.m., which would be a short drive, after a pretty good descend from the chateau in the Voges mountains. There can be quite a lot of traffic near the chateau as there is only one road leading up here. After about 11 a.m. the tourist groups are in full swing on the chateau, so it was good we had an early visit and wasn't too crowded.

The chateau's interior is lovely. Cool pictures of Alsace from the mountains, too.
The chateau was quite something as were the views from up here. Glad you liked them.

It was a bit of a walk down the road to our bus, which was parked along on the right. There is no bus park as many tourist sites have as there isn't any room for this. Especially, up in the Voges Mountains. It wasn't that much of a walk and besides, I was able to take in more views of the Alsace from up here, while making my way to the bus.
It was a bit of a ride down through the mountains and about another 15 minutes or so afterwards till we arrived in Kaysersburg around noontime. This was just for a lunch stop, but we'd be there for about two hours in this lovely Alsatian town.
Our bus dropped us off in the bus park...naturally in the south part of town. It was then just a short walk up the main pedestrian road to the center of this small town. It's a great little town and if you ever in the Alsace region it's definitely worth a stop.
Our tour director, Toni gave us a bit of a tour of the town, pointing different things out as well as small maps to use during this short visit.
Love the old style Bavarian architecture in Kaysersburg

After our short tour we all went on our own. Some of us explored the town and others like myself did a bit of exploring plus looking for a good eaterie in town. There were quite a few outdoor cafes and all have menus displayed there. I settled on one just off the main street. I wanted to eat outside since it was a pretty nice day, even if a bit overcast.
I found the Porte Haute Brasserie to have a menu to my liking with a number of Alsatian specialties. You were seated with other diners at a table and not individual ones like most restaurants. The tables seated about eight people. The restaurant was quite busy and service a bit slow, but understandable. I was in no rush and looking forward to a good meal.
Some of the Alsatian cuisine included various flambes, tarts, pizzas (with an Alsatian twist on them), pork dishes, venison stew and salads.
I started with some bread and a carafe of water. I also ordered a half bottle of Edelzwicker white wine, which is a dry white wine of the region. Similar to a Sauvignon Blanc. After a while my course came which was pan fried trout with slivered almonds in a lemon, white wine, butter and garlic sauce. It was also accompanied by pan fried potatoes, carrots and haricot verts (green beans). It was very good and the sauce was quite light surprisingly with the ingredients.
I finished off my lunch with an expresso. It was fairly reasonably priced and was about $22 for everything. Not bad and certainly not Paris prices.
I still had a bit of free time before I had to head back to the bus, so I walked the town a bit and took a few photos.
There is something about water photos that is just so amazing. Especially, when set against the Bavarian style buildings. It's quite striking.
NEXT: Through The Vineyards of Alsace and Some Fine Wines!

What a lovely place - glad you were able to find a reasonably priced restaurant too.
Really liked Kaysersborg a lot. I guess I picked the right place to eat!

Great pictures from the chateau! The pictures of Alsace are just beautiful! Love the architecture.
Loved the chateau and I think Kaysersborg is such a hidden gem. But there are quite a few tourists there. Probably, for those taking a break from or on their way to the Route du Vin!
