Three Weeks in The World and 20 Happy Thoughts: a DTR (During Trip Report!) - Page 10 - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

I just got all caught up on your TR. I'm glad I still have many days ahead to look forward to.
I'm curious how you're finding touring with your SLR camera. Our next vacation will be the first with mine, and I, too, am wondering how I will go on the rides with it. For the thrill rides, I'll be able to leave it with whoever is staying with the kids and the strollers. But, I know there are certain rides I'll want to be able to take pictures on (KS). Have you left it around your neck at all? I know I must have it, because I love the pictures it takes, but I'm not looking forward to lugging it around.
I hope you're holding up under all that heat. Hopefully, it will be cooler for the end of your trip.
I am curious about this too. MY P&S just crapped out on me and I was thinking of bringing my DSLR, but I wasn't sure if it would be too bulky. But it really does take better pictures than any P&S I could pick up prior to going. I was thinking of getting a bag that fits it closely so it wouldn't be as bulky and then maybe a big baggie to put it in if it rains or something ......

actually, today was the first day i took my 'real' camera to a park with me. and while i was going to talk about that experience in 'today's highlights', i can talk about it now to answer your questions!
i walked all around AK today with my camera around my neck. the only bag i have for it is rather large...and anyway, why have it in a bag? if i'm taking it, i'm using it! so i walked around with it around my neck all day, and while it was a bit less 'easy' than my normal 'tiny little purse' touring bag (which i also took--it is one of those small coach crossbody bags) it wasn't as bad as i was imagining. i took it on KS (and it was MUCH better than my little point and shoot, as it is so much faster!) and, surprisingly, on Expedition Everest. I put my purse in the little 'stuff holder' but kept the camera around my neck--and in my hands--and got a few good 'action' shots on the ride itself!
my only concern would be water rides--and thus i didn't do kali river rapids (i'm alone and have no one to hold it for me--and i don't trust the little center thing with my expensive camera!) oh--the other concern would be a passing thunderstorm. i don't care if i get wet, but i'd be very afraid for my camera. for that reason i don't know that i'll be taking it with me every day--it will be weather dependent.
one bit of advice--if you're going to wear it around your neck (and obviously i think you should!) consider getting a nicer strap. i have one that i got on etsy that is pretty (why i got it) but also very practical (an added bonus) as it is lined with suede. so instead of having a scratchy, sweaty vinyl strap around my neck all day, i had a cushy, fuzzy, soft leather strap. i was actually thinking that they should really make a strap that has an ice pack pouch on the back of the neck--that would be LOVELY!
ok...not writing highlights yet because my day isn't over yet! off to dinner at Jiko!
I am curious about this too. MY P&S just crapped out on me and I was thinking of bringing my DSLR, but I wasn't sure if it would be too bulky. Excellent!! Thanks for the thoughts on how it worked, I think i will go ahead and give it a try. I really do like the pictures so much better with it. Can't wait to see what you got today!
whew--that was a long 'day off'! ha! my meal at jiko was fantastic. i arrived early and wandered about AKL for a bit, eventually running into my friend and her sister (we've never met in real life before!) i had a great meal--i decided to go with a soup, appetizer, and dessert meal, so i had the corn soup, the ahi tuna 'salad' (which was AMAZING) and the coconut bread pudding. ALL of it was wonderful, and i had a great time with my friend and her sister! that had to be the highlight of the day.
but i also had a lovely time walking around AK with my camera today. i think my camera is what i was missing for the last five days. i love my camera. i need my camera. my camera makes me do things i wouldn't ordinarily do--like wander down a random path to see what animals i may find. i'm taking my camera with me as much as possible for the rest of the trip.
sadly, most of my pics didn't turn out that great. i spent a lot of time learning how to take photos in certain situations...and none of those situations were 'the bright florida sun'. i have some rockin' photos of sunsets and overcast nova scotia days from our road trip. i have fuzzy dreamy waterfall pics and super-saturated beautiful fields from PEI...but i struggled with getting good light at AK. here are some of the highlights that aren't really highlights...
in this next one, count five palm trees to the left of the bayobob (sp?) tree, and you'll see teeny tiny baby jabali (i saw him much closer on saturday but didn't have my camera--clearly i need a zoom lens!)
Thank you so much for the camera advice. Your pics are A-MAZE-ING!! You are making me super excited for our trip and all the photo ops I'm sure to encounter. Now I'm just going to have to look around for a good strap. Thanks again! (And I can't wait to see more pics. Keep up the great work.)
Yes thanks again for the tips. You pic came out great!! I had forgotten about making a strap cover to make it more comfy, so I pulled up a tutorial I had been saving and made one tonight!!

actually, i had lunch there yesterday! i was thinking of just having a snack for lunch, but then i remembered my list that i made for this thread of 'things i'm looking forward to' and i thought--why not? so i got the ribs. they were VERY good--but big enough to share (and i had no one to share with!) i also got to watch the guy in front of me get bit in the butt repeatedly by a duck. so it was like a meal AND a show!
