Where to eat the night before 1/2 Marathon - Page 2 - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

One thing I'd also ask is where are you staying the night before the race? That can also affect suggestions on where to eat. I'm partial to the Port Orleans resorts, and the food court in Riverside has an AMAZING pasta bar that I pretty much lived at over Marathon Weekend in 2014. Really delicious pasta, custom ordered with whatever you want/need mixed in. GREAT place to fuel pre-run.
Basically, I'm saying that you should be able to find decent fuelling sources at your home resort, which I'd suggest staying at to relax for Saturday. Friday you can be a little more adventurous and find somewhere fun to eat if your home resort options are limited.
I wouldn't worry about a huge meal on Friday night, as most of your carb loading should be finished in the 3-4 days before that...Friday should be a final top-off before Saturday. On Saturday itself I would do as others have suggested...something carb-heavy for breakfast (but not huge quantities). Something like oatmeal, bagel with PB, that sort of thing.
Lunch would be something simple and basic, nothing too complicated or risky. Turkey sandwich sounds delicious....something like that is what I'd choose.
I might do another sandwich for dinner as well....but then again I'm also a creature of habit and can eat the same thing repeatedly without getting sick of it.... and also knowing my Disney dining reward is on the other side of the half, it makes it easier Keep dinner small and you'll be fine.
Some things to avoid...might be obvious but anything deep fried, for obvious reasons. I'd also avoid heavy protein sources getting closer to the run, as those are harder to digest than other food types. Also eating salads and other leafy greens are not recommended, as they can help get things moving a little too well through your bowels... and nothing ruins a race time like a mid-run potty break (ask me now I know....on second thought... don't hehe)
Can't wait to hear how the run goes for you!
Tim
Tim,
This is all very helpful. Thank you! We are staying at Wilderness Lodge. I made a dinner reservation for the night before at Trattoria al Forno. I'm starting to think I should cancel it? When I ran the 10k in 2014 and I stayed at POFQ they offered protein boxes for runners, so I was hoping they would do the same for this race and it would be something I could have for dinner. Bagel with PB, banana, etc. I'm more concerned about foods during the day. I know I need to run weeks ahead of the race and try to figure out how foods settle with me! Good tip on the salad, because I would probably eat that with chicken if I had my choice over a sandwich
I'd keep the dinner reservation the night before if you like the restaurant, even if you ate Disney-sized portions you should have enough time to digest and have it pass through your system...though I'd still eat conservatively that close to the race. I made the mistake of trying a pork-mix crab cake two nights before a race earlier this year and almost paid for it...luckily things cleared up for race day, but I was a bit worried.
I'd imagine the racer boxes are a pretty universal thing at most resorts, though with the race being a night race they MIGHT not have them...I think the idea is that for the early-morning races they are easy grab and go things for the runners to have. Depending on the weather, I'd have a great day just lounging around the resort, taking the boat shuttle around to the other resorts and spending as much time off my feet that I could.

I will jump in here quick to say that you will get a box with food, but it will be at the end of the race not before. It will have some snacks in it. Also at the end, they should have bananas, PowerAde and water bottles. You should also have a tear-off on your bib for one free beer or other alcohol bev. that they have in barrels close to the food boxes. The last time I ran this it was Skinny Girl margaritas that was the other choice. Hope this info. helps.
Sorry one more thing....in the 3x I have run this race we always got a $10 gift card to use at the F&W booths after the race. It is attached to a bracelet for easy carrying.
Good luck with your planning. I'm paleo and gluten free (gluten make me feel like crap---I discovered that after I went paleo)...so no pasta load up for me. I get carbs from vegetables. We are eating at Raglan Road the night before (they told me they have alot of gluten free options for me which is so important the night before a race)....I did not carb up before the Broad Street Run (a 10miler and ended with a decent time). The day of a race though I wake up and have a gluten free waffle topped with sunbutter and banana ....If no toaster oven/microwave I would do some rice krispies in coconut milk with sunbutter and banana. I stay away from heavy fiber before a race....hard on the tummy.
