Forums Closed
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.

So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.

Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.

And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.

We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.

There are other changes as well.

Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:

We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.

It's time to move on and move forward.

PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.

But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.

So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.

And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.

That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!

If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.

So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

Bears are everywhere!!!!

Guess they are going to try to relocate these five bears instead of killing them. Gov Walker asked Fish and Game to try other solutions first.

Hope it works, but I can’t say that I’m really hopeful. Bears can be pretty stubborn and I can see them coming back or causing issues in their new home.

The bears do look sweet in the photos, but I don't think I'd feel comfortable with them just wandering around the neighborhood.

The current plan is to try and get them all at the same time, but if they can't, Fish and Game will hold them captured ones at the Alaska Zoo until they are able to get the rest of them. And then they will be moved around 60-70 miles south to the Portage Glacier area.

Actually, these are little black bears, they aren't as inclined to attack, but they will if they feel threatened.

Neither would I. There are just too many children and pets in that area. And the Government Hill area the bears are wandering around is just a bridge away from downtown Anchorage....could get ugly.

We have two bear families in our neighborhood. They live and let live. I am not sure why one needs to relocate them. Ours don't bother anyone and I've just been advised to make noise when I walk.

These ones are in a residential neighborhood and are getting into trash. And they are getting acclimated to humans and associating humans with food. This is a deadly combo. There is concern about children and pets.

The area the bears have moved into is just down out of the mountains and right next to downtown, so basically the city proper. If they were just passing thru nothing would be done expect keep a close eye on them until they moved on. However, this family has decided that this is their territory and if they don't get relocated, someone or one (or more) of the bears is going to end up hurt or worse.

One of the big problems with Anchorage, is we are basically surrounded by mountains, ocean and wilderness (owned by the federal government - the Air Force and Army reservations) so we are basically surrounded by wildlife. Which is totally cool!! Don't get me wrong, I love it, but you have to be aware and be as safe as possible. However, every year someone gets mauled by a bear or tromped by a moose or stuck in the mud flats. And every year a moose or bear has to be killed because it has become a "nuisance" animal. It's sad.

I am really upset with the waste management company that services that area. Apparently they won't offer bear proof garbage cans for the residents. You are required to use a certain kind of trash can that can be picked up and dumped by the trash truck. The bear proof kind would require an extra employee to go along with the truck and unlock each can before it could be dumped. But, of course, they would have to pass that cost on to the neighborhood, both for the cans and the employee. And if they did it in that neighborhood, they would have to do it in all the neighborhoods and then people would scream about that cost.

Normal household trash is what is keeping the bears in the area. Easy pickings...why forage in the woods for food when it's lined up for you in neat little cans that you can knock over and feast on?

The article said they were adapted to garbage. Eating garbage isn't good for the bears & eating garbage means they're going in to yards & that means they're much more likely to interact with people to the detriment of the bear, people or both. Plus four are cubs & the other one is mom which means you've got 4 young bears & a protective adult roaming around a part of Anchorage or maybe a suburb of Anchorage.

They're adorable in the pictures. But than again babies tend to be adorable no matter what their species.

I guess I just think of Anchorage (and all of Alaska ) as wilderness. A place where everyone has an acre at least, It sounds like it is more built up than I imagined. Trash cans are not a problem here-no trash pick up. We all take that weekly trip to the dump.

Too funny!
Nope we actually have cities! Anchorage has a population of around 301,000 people, Fairbanks and Juneau - less than 33,000 each, the remaining "big" cities like Soldotna, Wasilla, Palmer all less than 9,000 each (some less than 5,000). We have lots other towns/villages whose population numbers are less than 50. The whole state, however, has around 740,000 people. Not really a lot when you think about it.

So yeah, the state is mostly wilderness, but the built up areas (at least in Anchorage) are pretty built up and, while not metropolitan in the style of New York or LA, it's definately city.

And for the most part, if you have lived here for any length of time, you get to where you know how to handle the wildlife that comes wandering into your backyard. Although, there are ALWAYS going to be those idiots who pull stupid stunts and either end up getting themselves hurt or end up getting the animals condemned to death because of the human's actions.

Slowly, we are losing a lot of the green spaces that have been here as the city continues to grow. As I mentioned, we are kind of hemmed in. We have the mountains on one side, the inlet on another and the military bases on the last side of the triangle. We can't really get a whole lot bigger, we have to fill in the spaces that haven't been used yet.

Plus, the bear population seems to be on an upswing right now...They are doing really good, so individuals and mamas with cubs are being pushed into the city in search of prey and other food.

Ok. The biggest city here is 100k. Three times that size is urban to me. I guess I thought you didn't have cities.

Don't worry about it. I can't even begin to count how many times I've been asked if I live in an igloo and drive a dog sled to work. Or if we have electricity. Or have people in the "Lower 48" think we are a different country and want to know the exchange rate.
