As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.

There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:

It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). I'm attempting to "hand-paint" some canvas shoes to wear to WDW in Sept. Has anyone done this ?
I decided to use patterns similar to my D & B Sketch bag. I've already put on paper the placement of figures and it looks so cute......but..... I do have some questions for any "paint artists" or knowledgeable crafters here
!. I'm using white Tom's knock-offs....do I still need to put on a white base coat ?
2. Can I use Sharpies and draw/color instead of paint ? I am using black Sharpies to outline all the figures before coloring/painting.
3. If I do use paint.....do/would you use acrylic or fabric paint?
4. Which is the best "sealer" to put on after?......Can Mod Podge be used ?
I'm also doing a pair of Mickey and Minnie......with black knock-offs. These will be easier. I'm just painting the front areas of the shoes red and then buttons on one foot for Mickey and polka-dots on the other for Minnie.

I painted white canvas style keds for easter shoes years ago. I used regular acrylics but I watered them down so they soaked in. I didn't seal with anything, but I really never wore them except for easter for a few years. If using fabric paint, I'd get Jacquard textile paint instead of the bottles sold in craft stores. It's easier to work with.
Have you looked on the Dharma Trading Co website? They sell art supplies and specialize in fabric art. There are many tutorials and explanations about all their products. I have found them very helpful in what to buy.

I just did a pair for myself, I used gray shoes and fabric markers. For the white I had to use an oil based sharpie. I am not an artist but I think they turned out pretty good. I did not glaze them with anything, will see how they hold up in two weeks.

Great job............I'm impressed..... I think that I'd like to use Sharpies or fabric markers myself,due to the fine detail that I want to do. I think painting might be harder.
Your detail work looks amazing. I hope I can do at least half as good as you did. I'm not an artist either......and I know that there will be many imperfections but I think it will be fun to do and hopefully, be able to wear.
I really think that I'll need to put a glaze or finish on mine (the white pair, at least) to be able to wipe them off....also, it usually rains when I'm at WDW.

My DD did have the characters autograph shoes with sharpies a few trips back - and unfortunately they have ran the colors......apparently we should have used some type of sealer.

Thank you, and I sprayed them today so hopefully it will help them stay clean.
That's good....I know that I need a sealer because mine are white and will get dirty..... but...I'm more worried about the colors bleeding/running if the shoes get wet in the rain. .....And, I always get "rain" on my vacations to WDW.
I was advised to put on 2 to 3 light coats of a spray on sealer. If you put on a heavy coat, the art work might crack.
We purchased a pair of custom painted TOMS at Curl in DTD. They used acrylic craft paint (the kind in small bottles). They painted the entire show first then painted the picture. The shoes were not sealed with anything so DH sprayed with waterproofing spray.
