As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.

Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:

It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.

I haven't been to DC in a long time, but I've been to the monuments, Smithsonian, Arlington and most of the big tourist sites. Can anyone recommend some really great restaurants and some off the beaten path things to see?

There are so many little known museums/sites. Those could be fun. Spy Museum? (That is not one of the little known ones)
Explore the U street corridor? Lots of great history there.
Eat at Ben's Chili Bowl? Bill Cosby was here yesterday to celebrate its 55th anniversary.

I tuned into this thread to see what suggestions you got.... I also have plans to visit D.C. (Summer 2014)- I have only been to D.C. once and that was six years ago with my oldest son....
I plan to re-visit all the monuments plus see George Washington's home again....
I really, really, really, really want to take a tour of the inside of the White House! I've heard that interior tours are on hold right now, but need to see what I can find out as I've heard that the request must be made six months in advance.... I'm hoping it works out somehow....
I love the National Zoo, the National Cathedral, Embassy Row. Since teaching about the woman's suffrage amendment (#19), and the horrific circumstances surrounding it, the Sewall-Belmont House is on my bucket list ("Iron-Jawed Angels" is a terrific movie about this). Also the National Geographic Museum, and the Spy museum is supposed to be pretty good too. Did you see the Native American History Museum the last time? They are supposed to have a killer cafe. I know the Archives rotates exhibits (yes, there are things there OTHER than the Constitution, LOL), and the last time I went I got to see the Homestead papers for Almanzo Wilder -- WAY COOL as I LOVE "Little House on the Prairie". If you decide to do Arlington again, be sure to go waaaaaay in the back. There are sections there that a lot of people miss (Buffalo soldiers, the Roughriders, and Nurses, just to name a few.). Constitution Gardens is a nice respite from the hustle and bustle along the Mall, and I think there is also a Jewish History Museum that is supposed to be really nice. I'm sure there's a lot of other things too, that others might know more about. Hope that helps!

I would highly recommend the Newseum. Its a relatively new museum dedicated to The News. It was recommended to me by a colleague and both DD and I loved the place and even went back the next day (admission is good for 2 days). There is so much to see here, from pieces of the Berlin Wall, Kennedy family photos, Tim Russert's office (just as it was when he died), a photo retrospective of White House dogs (you can vote for your favorite) and much more. Outside, everyday they post front pages from newspapers around the world. Anyone walking past can take a look at them.

Also, I have a restaurant recommendation: Matchbox in China town. Very trendy and excellent food. We went there for lunch on a Sunday and had to wait about 10 minutes for a table. This restaurant is popular with Capital Hill interns and the under 30 crowd, but we saw people of all ages eating there on Sunday.

Glad I ran across this thread. We are headed to DC the first week in October. Hubby has a conference and I have several days to entertain myself before we head down to Richmond. Down there we are planning on touring Mt Vernon, Monticello and Williamsburg. I will have to find the National Geographic Museum. Did see an article recently on the Newseum and it sounded wonderful!
