What age did your kiddos stop handing out Valentines at school?

Well my 4th grader still does but I don't know if my 6th grader in middle school will or not since it's his first
year at that school.

My son refused in his last year of elementary (5th) to bring any in. My daughter brought them in for her 5th grade, but middle school is out.

We don't have kids, but we never handed out Valentine's at school really - I obviously missed out!

My kids aren't in school yet, but when I was in school I gave them out right through high school!

I remember 4th grade being it for Emily. The elementary here goes to 4th so that will probably be it for Matthew as well. I have a hunch that he and some of his buddies might boycott it this year though!

When I was in Jr. High and High school, you didnt pass out valentines like in grade school, but they had a candy gram you could buy for 1.00, where somebody would deliver a candybar and balloon, or for 5.00 you could have half a dozen roses and balloon delivered.

I think 5th grade was the last year that they had a "Whole Class" party for Valentine's Day, involving valentines for everyone in their class. That said, Amanda and Jennie still, in 9th and 8th grades, respectively, still buy and fill out cards for all their friends.

The National Junior Honor Society uses this as their big fund raiser every year. They sell carnations for $1, complete with attached message. These are delivered class to class on Valentine's Day - some kids spend up to $30-40 on flowers! I personally do not like this situation - it is heartbreaking when they come into the classroom delivering 30 flowers to one child, and none to the next. But - the advisor has been doing this for decades, and she won't give it up! It also takes up two whole days of class time for the NJHS students, between selling, labelling and delivering. Personally, I think the time has come for retirement!

Marie, I agree w/you 100%!! I got valentines grams, but a good friend of mine never got any, except for the ones I would send her. It was really kind of hurtful to be that one girl who never got one from a boy.

I know it is a good fundraiser, but maybe there could be another way.......

They did the carnations at my high school too. Benefit of the National Honor Society. They always had extra flowers and the teachers would send them to kids who didn't get any from "secret admirers". That way all of the girls had some to carry around and no one felt left out.

I know we did them up until the 5th grade (end of elem. school) Not sure what they do at Kylor's school - it goes to 6th.

And what happened to bringing in your own nice homemade Valentine box? My mom and I made one for my 5th grade Valentine box out of fabric, with a chimney with cotton coming out of it. It was the coolest. Now they just make shoebox ones in school I always brought in the Valentines that you could stick the lollypop in.

I remember making the V-day boxes, and they had to be spectacular (well, mine had to be at least!) We did the parties with the card trading until 6th grade (the end of elementary school). My friends and I always exchanged cards all the way through high school, in fact, a bunch of us did it at college too. Mine were always Disney!

Our NHS also did the carnation fund raiser. Not fun for those without a sweetheart.

Well DD has asked to do them again this year. She's in 5th. The last couple of years we've done these cute little airplanes out of a pack of Smartees (for the body), a stick of gum from one of those big packs (for the wings), 2 life savers (for the wheels) and a small rubberband. We got the idea from the Family Fun website. The gum wrappers in those big packs do not have the logo on them, just white, so you can put your message there. They're very cute. And since DD always seems to have a different class of kids than she did the year before, everyone thinks they're cute.

My kids aren't old enough, but we stopped in elementary school. to get Valentine's. We'd make up the special folders and hand them on our desk. Such fun!!
