buying resale or thru disney? [Disney Vacation Club contracts] - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

buying resale or thru disney? [Disney Vacation Club contracts]
My husband and I have finally decided to buy into DVC!!!. We won't be able to do it until the first of the year as we want to pay cash. My dilema, do we buy thru resale or do we go thru Disney. Not sure of what the benefits would be to go thru Disney when it seems so much more expensive. Am I missing something?
What are the pros and cons of both?
Thanks for your help
Julie
My boyfriend and I went through Disney to join the DVC. Personally I would purchase through Disney. I know that they are a little bit more expensive but recently Disney has announced that people who buy through resale can only use those points to book rooms @ DVC resorts or through the RCI exchange collection. Meaning that points cannot be used for the Disney Collection, Concierge collection or Adventurers Collection, so if you at any point wanted to book a cruise using points you would not be able to if you bought through resale. Also Disney does state they have the right to refuse a purchase through resale. Hopefully this helps.

PassPorter's Free-Book to Walt Disney World It’s hard to believe anything is free at Walt Disney World; but there are actually a number of things you can get or do for little to no cost. This e-book documents over 200 free or cheap tips to do before you go and after you arrive. You could save a considerable amount of money following these tips. Perhaps more importantly; you can discover overlooked attractions and little-known details most people whiz by on their way to spend money. Click here to see free sample pages from the e-book! Get this popular e-book free of extra charges when you join the PassPorter's Club for as little as $4.95. A club pass includes access to all our other e-books; e-worksheets; super-size photos; and more! This e-book is also available for separate purchase in the PassPorter Online Store for just $5.95.
We purchased resale and recommend that. It takes a little longer to go through the closing process but it worth it for the amount of money you will save. Buying points through Disney is very expensive and if you had to sell them you would lose a lot of money. With Disneys new rules of resale purchases you can only use the points at Disney resorts but that is the best use of points anyway. If you were buying to trade points out to stay at non disney locations you might consider looking at other time share option. My one recommendation if purchasing resale is use a reputable agent such as DVC by Resale or the Timeshare Store.
We've always bought through the DVC directly and every time we have, it's been because they've offered such great incentives. It's worth checking out what incentives are on at the time you're looking to buy, as they may influence your decision. deciding.
We bought through disney because of the incentives. They matched our down payment and we got a years worth of points for the first year in addition the the ones we bought. So we had 2 years of points the first year to do what we wanted with.

I've bought resale and I would do it again despite the new restrictions. I got my BCV points for $78 pp when disney wanted to sell them to me for $114 pp. I laughed when the DVC rep told me the price. I don't ever plan on using my points for anything other than a DVC stay so it doesn't matter to me about the new rule.
If you want to buy at Aulani or Bay Lake Tower, IMO it makes most sense to buy direct. The price savings via resale isn't dramatic enough to justify that course...again, IMO.
As for the others, you'll have to do a lot of soul-searching to determine whether you are willing to forego the benefits lost with a resale purchase.
My advice would be to try and find someone who has been a member for 10+ years and ask them how their outlook has changed over the years. Obviously points go furthest when used for DVC accommodations so the logical advice is to buy with the intent of using exclusively for DVC resort stays. But IMO, that outlook can change dramatically over time. 40+ years of theme park visits sounds like heaven when you're signing the papers, but do you think you will really feel that way after 10 years? 20 years? 30 years? That's a lot of trips on Soarin and Expedition Everest. That's a lot of aging for you and your family.
We have been members for 8 years and have never used a point for a non-DVC resort. But I have to say, the more time that passess, the more I can see it happening someday. Maybe we will want to go to Disneyland Paris someday or use points for a cruise instead of paying cash.
IMO, being banned from those options for the life of the contract is a pretty big carrot to leave on the table when buying resale. When adding-on I can see having some direct and some resale contracts. At least then the option still exists. But being permanently banned from non-DVC hotels, Disney Cruise Line and so on is a very restrictive limitation.

I think looking at the future we may want to use in other ways especially the cruises. I think that we have decided that we are going to go direct and not lose the other benefits we may want to use down the road. Thank you for pointing this out it is an excellent argument.
Okay so we know we want DVC now we are struggling with resale vs Disney. I see pros and cons for both.
First does anyone know if you buy resale can you use your points at Disneyland Paris or Hongkong?
I know we can't use them for cruises or ABD.
Also do you think your home really makes a difference. I like the animal kingdom villas but Saratoga springs seem to be less expensive per point. I'm not really looking at annual dues cause I know they will increase. Thanks

Disneyland Paris and Hong Kong Disney would both be considered the Disney collection, which is one of the collections no longer available to those who purchase resale.
The biggest difference in home resorts (besides annual dues) would be your home resort booking advantage. AKLV has concierge DVC rooms, which book quickly! If you are interested in those, the 11 month booking window at AKLV would be important.

I would recommend you buy where you want to stay. It doesn't make a difference if you don't mind staying in your home resort. It would be recommended that you make your res at the 11 month mark especially if you are going at a busy time. Then at 7 months try to change to another resort. Sometime you can get in and sometime you can't so its important that you like your home resort.
One other thing that might help. You didn't mention how many points you would need but if you needed to purchase a lot of points I beleive Disney will let you split them into at least two smaller contract if you are buying directly from them. Smaller contracts are easy to resell and you can usually get more $ per point for them. Later in life if you realized you didn't need all of your points you could sell one of the contracts too. Just something more to think about.
