As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Well it's that time again. In search of a new camera/camcorder for our trip to WDW for Xmas. Our old camera is a C-740 Ultra Zoom Olympus 3.2MP. It's a nice camera but it's time for a new one.
We are think about getting a all-in-one Camcorder and camera but, it looks like that camera might not be that good with a setup like that. I'm looking atSony HDR-SR12 5.0MP Handycam HD Camcorder with Cable and Extra Battery I like that it has a hard drive and records in HD. The idea of recording fireworks/parade, then taking (still) pictures at same time. How does that even work?? Can you re watch something you already recorded then take a still picture shot? Now that would work!
Or we can just get a camera that also shoot little movies with sound. That would be cheaper.
I don't know too many choices. Maybe just do WDW photo pass and be down with it.
I believe you can watch it and then take pictures of what you are watching. At least that is how my panasonic works. It tkaes the vidoe to the cassette, and then you can record the still picture to the SD card.
As you have guessed, taking still photos with a camcorder will not give you as good of photos as you will get with a dedicated still camera, but unless you were blowing them up to large-format sizes, you won't really notice the difference. Most comsumer-level camera users will not notice a great difference in photo quality over about 3 megapixels in size, especually on teh common 4x6 inch prints everyone usually gets.
Likewise, a still camera, while able to capture video, will not be as decent a quality of video as you will get with a camcorder, so you have a choice to make if you only have one camera you want to buy....which will you use more? a still camera or a camcorder? You can get reasonably small, and reasonably decent cameras of both types for a decent cost...so carrying both is viable, but if you only have one to buy, choose which you'll use more.
As far as what type of camcorder to buy, getting a hard drive version is a good choice, they're really booming on the market right now, and have a really good storage capacity (at least 5-9 hours capacity on high quality, which is, for most, all you might need). Also good you're looking towards high def cameras as well...you might not use it now, but it means you won't have to upgrade again in the future when you do start getting a high def television.
As far as what model to get, as long as you stick to one of the major manufacturers, you should do fine....just get the one that you find easiest to use. Sony are good models, but I'm partial to Canon cameras myself, largely because you USUALLY get a better lens with them....and the lens of a camera makes a really big difference.
Good luck on your camera shopping, I'll be lookign for a compact camcorder this Christmas season myself...I've done some shopping and there is a ton of great stuff out there right now!

What do you use/like?
huh, good luck with that, I am still taking pics on a camera that uses film - yep, the photopass guys were making fun of me
I have athe Kodak easy share camera! I really like it! I can take movies and pictures! The movies are good enough for me! Not to mention has a 7 mega pix! If you go to my web page you can see the movies it takes! I havea few little ones from our Niagara Falls Trip under Vacations!
Thanks Tim for all of the info! I'll be looking for a new camera this year, but right now I have a Panasonic Lumix. I find the best place to go looking is a place where the sales people don't work on commission. Then, you can ask all of your questions without wondering if they are trying to sell you up to a more expensive camera.
Watch the H.D. cam corders. I'm considering one and have talked with the reps at the Sony store. Can't remember which model I was looking at but the issue with these is playback. You can't burn your movies to a dvd unless you have an H.D. burner and discs. You can download them to your computer and watch them there and then burn to a disc but it won't be in H.D. As far as one with a built in hard drive, that might be a little different. Maybe it will connect right to your t.v. for playback. As far as the built in camera function, I never use it on my Sony Handi cam. The way that works is, you take the picture, and while doing so you see the still image, then once the picture is processed, it returns to recording. When you play your movie back, you have a few seconds of a still photo with sound in the background. Again, maybe this has changed as mine is an older version. I'd love to have a camera that would do both functions well but I don't think that's possible. so for now, I'm the geek running around with my camera and camcorder.

That's something I've heard also. I know DH would LOVE a new HD comcorder but it's a bit too $$$ for us right now. I think he's been looking at the JVC Everio 60MB camcorder. Just do your homeowrk. Google them, read reviews, etc. I got DH a Canon Powershot 8 MP camera for Father's Day and we love it. It takes beautiful pics (as opposed to our Sony Cybershot where EVERY pic was blurry) and it takes fantastic short 'movies'. Best digital we've had so far and only about $250. Good luck with your decision.
When you ride the big rides (RnRC) were do you put your high price camera/camcorder. I think they have little cubbyholes but, after you leave on the ride another RnRC gets drop off before you. Then you can come back and pick it up. We will have a backpack. Can we put it around ours legs and hold on to it?
