Forums Closed
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.

So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.

Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.

And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.

We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.

There are other changes as well.

Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:

We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.

It's time to move on and move forward.

PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.

But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.

So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.

And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.

That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!

If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.

So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

Question Need Help Deciding????

Okay so we need help... we are looking at DVC (through a reseller) but when we do the math I may be missing something!!!

Initial purchase cost + annual dues

but each year we still have to pay for tickets, dining packages (we like those) and airlines... which when you add up what we pay now (staying at poly of BW or Beach Club) would be about the same...

We do not travel more than once a year... is it really worth it for us?

We have also purchased our trip (3land/4sea) for next year... how would that be affected? could we somehow apply the DVC to reduce the cost of that trip?

It would help if you shared some of your numbers. Forget the park tickets, food, transportation and other expenses because you're stuck paying for those whether you are a cash guest or not.

Focus on the lodging. How much are you paying for your hotel room now vs. what it would cost for DVC?

If you are doing a true apples-to-apples comparison, you should find that you start to save money in less than 10 years. That's comparing a typical Deluxe resort room with a DVC studio.

Some common errors you could be making:

1. Are you comparing the same number of nights when looking at cash vs. DVC? You can't compare 7 nights at a Deluxe with 10 nights in a DVC studio and expect the numbers to be glowing.

2. Are you comparing a standard Deluxe room to something larger than a Studio? One Bedroom villas are 700+ sq ft with a jacuzzi tub, washer/dryer, full kitchen, separate living space, etc. Again, you can't expect to see tremendous savings if you are making that sort of apples-to-oranges comparison.

3. Are you factoring in stays at non-DVC resorts like the Poly? Those locations cost 4-5 times as much as a comparable DVC resort room. If you are contemplating buying into DVC, you really need to resign yourself to staying at the DVC resorts.

As for your question about the cruise, that would depend upon your cancellation policy. Pending availability, you could spend DVC points for the "land" portion of your vacation and rebook the cruise by itself.

I agree - if you can provide us with more information about the numbers you're looking at, then hopefully we can help you.

Numbers

As the info says about DVC, it generally takes 5-7 yrs/trips to equal what you first paid out. When we go to WDW, I go to disney.com and price our vacation. I get a price for room and tickets and then print. In 26 days (our 5th trip) we will be at the equal point. Meaning our initial payout is equal to what we would have spent in cash. Of course we go twice a yr. So the annual tickets are cheaper that park hoppers. An with all the room perks like kitchenette or kitchen, making most of our own meals, it is alot cheaper than paying out of pocket each yr. In January, my husband and I will be going on our 3rd trip on 2008 annual passes. So right there we're saving $750.

As for annual dues, we just save up for them. We treat them like another house insurance bill!

Here's what I did: I added up all the DVC points I'd get till our contract ends (about 7,500 over the next 45 years or so). Then I added up all the annual dues we'd pay during that time (incl. an annual increase of 3% to be on the safe side). Lastly, I divided the initial purchase cost, cost of financing and annual dues by 7,500. (It's not 100% correct as technically you'd have to consider more factors when looking at a 45-year-period...) If I remember correctly, that led to a price of $5-8 per point. Now, when I made our first reservations using points, I compared the amount of points we'd use for that stay to the room-only price (incl. tax) Disney states on it's website had we payed cash for it. On average, I got a "value" of $10-13 per point.

Soooo, for every stay we use points instead of paying cash, we'll save about $5 per point. For example, if we make a reservation using 100 points, those points (according to the calculations above) cost us 100 * $5-8 = $500-800. If we paid cash for that reservation (as non-DVC members), we'd have to pay 100 * $10-13 = $1000-1300, meaning that we saved $500 on this particular trip.

I know this is just one way of looking at it but every way I've looked at it, I always came out way ahead! DVC is worth it if you know you'll be able to vacation regularly for years to come.

Let me know if there's anything else you'd like to know. Having the figures you looked at would definitely help. And I agree with tjkraz that you need to leave tickets, dining, airfare etc. out of the equation as you'll have to pay for that no matter what. Note, though, that you CAN add dining packages to your reservation when using DVC points.
