As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!
Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

PassPorter PDA Wish List
As I've been planning the final details of this trip (6 days and counting), I keep going back to the "PalmPorter" or a PDA version/companion. My whole trip is winding up in my Palm m505.
To that end, I've been playing with the Palm Reader (has bookmarks, notes, table of contents, search). I also work with a database called ThinkDB ( www.thinkingbytes.com) that is highly adaptable.
So....
My question is:
What would you like in a pda version/companion?
- ability to add my own notes
- my own ratings
- store PS confirmations etc.
- searching capability by??
- read like a book (document style with bookmarks)?
- read like a database (lots of lists)
- table of contents?
What PDA OS would it have to support?
Would you want to download the file? Would you consider buying it on a expansion card?
What are your thoughts???
ok so that was more than one question...Sorry!

Re: PassPorter PDA Wish List
My favorite thing about the Passporter is the Passpockets for all of my confirmation printouts etc. so...I was thinking...how about a deluxe version that has room for a PDA (like other planner binders). I suppose I could go out to an office store and find one, but that wouldn't be as fun!
For a PDA app wish list:
I would prefer a database format with lists instead of reading like a book.
I'd also like to see a search on a "closest to me" basis. I have a program where you input your closest intersection in NYC and it will give you walking directions to whatever restaurant or store you choose from the database - something like that would be great!

Re: PassPorter PDA Wish List
I would like a combination reader and database with the ability to add events (appointments, hotel info, etc) which would automatically place an entry into the calendar function.

Re: PassPorter PDA Wish List
I record everything on my Palm and use it for trip reports. I'd like a mixture of book and database - or a book with a good search feature so i could search for character breakfasts for example. Interactive maps could take up a lot of memory but could be very useful and being able to add your own comments to entries would be great. Likewise for preparing trip reports
I think the card expansion slot would probably be the answer to encompass what everyone wants! Or maybe a downloadable version that can be loaded onto an expansion card....

Re: PassPorter PDA Wish List
I guess I lean toward the Palm Reader version is: the reader is free. Once you have the text, you can just format it for the Palm Reader...convert it using free conversion software and viola. It's done. There is also a utility you can buy that will help the formatting. The Palm Reader has a 4 layer deep table of contents. If you did one attraction per "page", you could have quite a detailed table of contents. Ability to bookmark and add notes(either by "writer" or "reader. I think you can search for words too. I know you can load a book on an expansion card - I have. It would be a very low cost project. No hardware or stock. You could sell the book on www.peanutpress.com.
Downside: cannot add appointments to your calendar like ThinkDB can. And you couldnt sort items by various criteria (price, ratings, etc.)
My years in IT have taught me one thing: Think about all the aspects of a project before beginning. Still thinking....I'm sure Dave and Jennifer have an ulimited R&D budget for this...

Re: PassPorter PDA Wish List
:::chuckling about R&D budget:::
I love seeing all these ideas and suggestions! Please keep them coming.
With our own backgrounds in computing (something like 18 computing-related book titles between us, and I have 25 years in engineering including about 10 where I also had IT responsibilities....) Jennifer and I have been able to come up with some very nifty ideas of our own. Too bad we're not software developers.
That's one of the problems. With our background, we want the PalmPorter to be the niftiest PDA-based travel guidebook ever. That means it has to have an underlying database, mapping, simple but powerful search abilities, and still take advantage of the native capabilities of the Palm OS so that itinerary scheduling, ToDo, etc. are integrated into the regular applications. The desire for nift-factor sometimes gets in the way of everything else.
So again, please keep the suggestions coming. And if you have any real-world knowledge of how to do this all, please drop me a line.

Re: PassPorter PDA Wish List
Might be an idea you can sell to Palm as they are trying to promote e-books. get them to do the hard work for you?

Re: PassPorter PDA Wish List
You could also bundle the PalmPorter with Print Boy so the less technical members of your traveling party could have paper copies. Or export to the Memo Pad - a very popular option. Im currently using List Maker Pro to handle details for a conference in January - when I want to update people,I export into Memo Pad and c&p into email. Works great!
I know ThinkDB will handle the Export to Calendar and ToDo. It also has a search feature. It can handle pictures - do you mean full park maps?? It can be used as a graphic database but screen size is still a limitation. They do have a developer section. Most db programs to have a runtime version that is redistributable.
Still thinking.....
