Forums Closed

As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!
Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

Re: Money...
Hello, Michelle!!
I teach at a private school, and we've had several very successful fund raisers that have become annual events. Our biggest is a Christmas marketplace. We ask vendors to come in from all over the state and even the Southeast. Another school does a variation on the same theme, only theirs are all hand-made items donated by the parents.
The second big fund-raiser is an auction. Because we're a private school, we're able to auction off things like art, jewelry, etc. (And yes, we did raffle off a car: a convertible BMW!) But a few ideas you could use...does anyone own a time-share condo or house? We auction off a week at the condo. We also have groups of parents who get together to buy an item to be auctioned. It ran the extremes: From a week in the rainforests of Brazil to offering their home and cooking skills for a dinner party of six. One teacher known for her bread-making auctioned off a year's worth of bread. The cheerleaders auctioned off a birthday party (they came, taught cheers, gave the birthday girl a pom-pom). AND-each grade level created an item to be auctioned off. We have about 60 students at each grade level, and each parent was asked to donate a certain amount of money. One grade painted a pair of Adirondack chairs. One grade painted a set of dishes. (You get the idea.)
Our third is a golf tournament. For reasons I will *never* understand (because I don't get golf to begin with!!) our community loves golf tournaments. So-where I live, if you want a good fund-raiser, host a golf tournament!!
Well! This was long-winded!!
If you have any specific questions, let me know! If I don't have the answers, I can track down someone who does!!
Good Luck!!

Re: Money...
Kimber~
Thanks for the ideas. I think a golf tournament would go over well here, but I'm like you, I have never understood it! I also really like the idea of the Christmas Marketplace. That also sounds like a great idea, and something that could be done each year. Do you hold that at your school, or do you rent a different place? I think if we did something like that, we'd have to find a place to hold it... maybe the fairgrounds.
We are having a meeting on Thursday where we may get a chance to talk about this, and if not, we will have a meeting in a couple of weeks where we will be discussing ideas.
One of our private schools here has an auction in April each year. I know they make a lot of money doing it each year. I'm afraid to try it to since it might lose it's appeal for both schools. Does that make sense?

Re: Money...
Hi Michelle,
Boy did you get involved in a BIG project!!!
You have a lot of good ideas here!
Lets try and bring this "off topic" item back "on topic"!!
Get some local business & radio stations to donate some cash to put together a Disney Trip!!
This could be an incredible raffle! Not only could you generate local interest but nation, even worldwide interest!! For such a good cause I would buy a ticket!!
Something else to check out in the cities are your "major" companies. Some may do matching contributions for charities. This could help increase your intake considerably!
Good Luck!! And let me know if you do a Disney raffle!!

Re: Money...
Bingo is a huge money raiser. Does your town have a Bingo hall? If so, they are probably looking for groups to work in return for money.
A few suggestions - If you do the raffle for a car (which would be great) or any other prizes, check with your state gaming regulations. Some states, such as Colorado, consider raffles a form of gambling, therefore you must have a special license.
Also, try to stay away from doing several small fund raisers. Parents get tired of having to sell items and neighbors get tired of all the kids asking them to buy the same items. Two or three larger fund raisers might be harder to put together, but in the long run will be more productive.
Isn't it sad when parents and schools have to supplement funding for education with fund raisers? Here in Colorado we are in the same boat. DH and I haven't even had a cost of living raise in about 5 years (however, I would rather make less money if it means keeping programs for the kids). Colorado has no problems passing tax increases for football and baseball stadiums, but won't pass the bonds for schools.
I'll get off my soap box now.
Good Luck!

Re: Money...
Michelle: We rent the ballroom at the local civic center. The other school, to the best of my knowledge, does it in their gym.
WildforWD: GREAT idea!!
Fortissimo: Good points! (In fact, they just announced this week they are cutting one of the fund raisers!)
Good Luck!!

Re: Money...
Great idea Wild!
I was trying to figure out how to do a raffle for a trip to WDW, but I didn't think any travel agency would go for it.
I never thought of asking business to donate towards it... GREAT IDEA!!
The coach at our high school did a lot of fundraising for a new stadium (imagine grass, some parking, and a few bleachers~ not a huge Stadium!) and they raffled tickets and airfare to a NFL game. The point of that is I think we'll be okay with the raffle, but I honestly didn't even think about having to have a special license. Always better to think of that before than after!
I definitely agree with a few big fundraisers, and not a bunch of small ones. There are only 120+ students in the school, and I don't want anyone to feel like we are always asking for money or for them to sell something.
You guys are great! I'll keep you posted on what we come up with.
Michelle

Re: Money...
I think the raffle idea is a good one. Most times when people know that the proceeds will benefit children they buy them even if they are not really interested. When my son was in daycare they raffled off a turkey around Thanksgiving. You'd be suprised at all the people who bought tickets for that one 15 lb turkey.
