As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Question for Teachers and Former Teachers (and others)
I just got an e-mail from my 8 yr. old's teacher. Last weekend, I had to sign DD's spelling test (have to sign EVERY paper from this teacher) and noticed that while she was counted wrong on 2 words, only one appeared wrong.
I checked my spelling of the word (throughout)and found that DD was correct. I noted that on the paper, and sent it in.
The teacher's email is basically saying that the teacher has noticed that Lauren (DD) forms her Us like Ws on occasion. When she marked the word wrong, she thought maybe she should talk to Lauren about it, but didn't.
Now, she wants to know if I think Lauren CHEATED?!?!?!
I sent off an e-mail that while I can't say Lauren has never lied, and never cheated (she is a kid after all), I doubt she did in this case. And, that if she thought the Us and Ws looking similar (although she CAN tell the difference) MAYBE she should TALK to Lauren about it. DD can't correct it if she's not aware of it.
(Lauren is in an immersion school for French/Spanish - English is only taught/spoken for one hour a day and the writing for French/Spanish is very different than for English - although our alphabets are the same, the letters are formed differently in cursive - like a U that looks like a W)
SO, my question is: What do I do past this? Is there anything I should do? Or, do I just let them figure it out? Parent/Teacher conferences are next week.

My kids are not in school yet, but I would talk to both the teacher and your DD. Like you said she cannot fix it, if she doesn't know what's wrong. I would just be honest with the teacher. I think communication is the key! Good luck! [img]/ubb/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img]

I'm not a teacher or a former teacher, but as a parent- I have to say:
Wow! I would have been VERY offended that the teacher was insinuating your child cheated on that spelling test and I think I would have said as much to her. How does she get to "cheated" from the "U's" and "W's" look similar? If she has a problem with the way your daughter forms her letters, she should tell her so that she can "correct" it... sounds like the teacher looking for stuff to take the spotlight off of her mistake!

I think you are right, and the teacher should have talked about the W/U problem, and the teacher should not have insinuated Lauren cheated. You sent an email, I'd wait for the teacher's response, and see if she does, in fact, talk to Lauren.
If she doesn't get back to you or talk to your daughter, then I'd bring it up during parent/teacher conferences.

[img]/ubb/images/graemlins/yeahthat.gif[/img] kinda harsh for an elementary school teacher.. I think you handled it great .. I would take a copy of the e-mail to the conferences & ask her what she meant by that & if need be, show it to the principal & request all of you meet.

As a parent, I found that it was not unusual in elementary school for teachers to "get it wrong", for my kids it was usually in science,which all three loved. For the most part, I would support them in letting the teacher know politely, that they had made a mistake. My kids also had tests marked incorrectly either due to the teaching missing something or at times the kids giving infomrmation that was correct but of which the teacher was not aware. When tests or graded work was marked incorrectly, I'd write a note and ask the teacher to correct the grade. My middle son had one teacher in high school who agreed to do this but did not-I ended up having to go in and speak with him,
As far as your 8 year old cheating, I thought that was a bit much. I don't think most 8 year olds would really think through the idea that if I make my u's ambiguous, the teacher won't know if I'm spelling correctly. I guess I'd question if this teacher really understood third graders and keep a little more on top of things in her class.
I think you handled things very well. It sounds like your response was calm and level headed. I'm not sure mine would have been. I would keep a copy of the test and email in case something similar happens again.

As a teacher I encourage students to let me know if I make a mistake grading, which I certainly do occassionally. Of course, I teach high school and they will normally speak up themselves quite quickly if they think I'm wrong. Give the teacher the chance to clarify the problem, before bringing it up again.
