Forums Closed
|
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!
Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

Kassie is REALLY scared - PIXIE\'S please! - LAST UPDATE in 1st Post 8/12
My 14 year old has never had a blood test and I have tiny rolling veins and am a BEAR to draw from. She is being tested (they are already certain that she has) PCOS/Insulin Resistance and in order for the insurance to pay for the meds they have to confirm it with blood work.
Tomorrow her and Sam (he's the brave one in the house) are getting "matching" 2hr blood glucose tests. She is SOOOOO scared, and has wanted to back out several times.
PLEASE send your pixies for her tomorrow. When she gets very nervous she starts to shake and sweat and the whole nine yards - which won't be good to draw from. She'll have a total of 3 draws. We're bringing the portable DVD player to pass the time.
First thing in the morning - we're getting up because they have to be fasting.
The diabetic meds they want to put her on (Glucophage) has proven to be extremely successful for girls her age. We are very hopeful that it will give her an even healthier life.
************************************************** **********
UPDATE: Well we got back after being there for OVER 3-1/2 HOURS. It was supposed to be a 2hr Glucose test.
As I figured Kassie is a NIGHTMARE to draw from. I asked them not to dig. They could not find decent veins whatsoever in the arms, so they went for the hand and she DUG AND DUG AND DUG AND DUG. Why don't they listen to a patient?????????????????? They finally hit a vein after digging for a while and it DRIP DRIP DRIPS into the vial. She had 4 VIALS to fill and couldn't even get one filled. So she said on the next draw (an hour after she drank the Glucola) she'd get the rest.
BIG PROBLEM!!! A few of the other tests have to be drawn FASTING!! HELLLLLLLLOOOOOOOO - she should have known that. So we have to go back AGAIN in the morning. Sam said when he went back to get his draw the one lady was getting REEMED for not getting the draw the first time when they had to be fasting.
The decided (at my insistence) to just do finger sticks and bleed her for the other two glucose tests.
2nd time around we had a problem and they squeezed and squeezed and couldn't get enough. So they stuck her AGAIN in the same finger (almost in the cuticle so it hurts like heck) and finally got enough.
So we are getting up at 7:00am and going back for another blood draw. Still need those pixies for the FIRST TIME success. I'm even going with NO MAKE-UP - hope they aren't too scared to draw her blood! LOL
[b]************************************************** *****
Can we call yesterday and today the days from H E Double Hockey Sticks.
We went back this morning - at the b**t crack of dawn (Sam works 2nd shift so we didn't get to bed until 3:00am) - we were at the hospital at 7:30am. I went with no makeup. Maybe I scared them from it going smoothly? Shaking hands? You know?
They gave her a warm up thing to hold on her hand while we chatted. Hoping to bring that vein up. She told us while waiting that she suspects that Kassie has FRAGILE veins - as well as small rolling veins (maybe that is the same thing?? who knows??) and that if they use the regular vacumn-tubes (you know the ones they snap on the end of syringe that basically SUCKS OUT the blood) it collapes her veins. FUN FUN
The very confident - 10 year veteran of blood draws - went into her hand. There is absolutely NO vein to be found in her arm (I guess).
Well, she tried the 1st time. NOTHING. She tried the 2nd time and got a vein but it was a VERY slow vein and she pulled out as much as she could - and it was one of those - it felt like you hand is being whacked with a hammer. If you've had a bad blood draw on the hand you'll know what I mean. I asked her "Are you sure it's enough"? She said "yea for just the two tests we need" and I said "NOOOOOO - she has about 8 tests or more to get done". And she looked at me like "Oh no". She took the blood in the back. The good news was - it was enough for all the tests EXCEPT that bringing the blood out that slow meant that it sort of was too long and the red blood cells started to break apart and it was NO GOOD for the ONE FASTING TEST we needed - the insulin test!!!
So she had to go BACK for another test. At this point Kassie started to cry. At least she wasn't trying to run away or say "No more". I KNEW this test had to be done and she did too, that's why she cried - to have to go through it all over again.
The good news was - she did hit a vein right away - a very cooperative vein - so now we know to tell them to go there FIRST and funny that it's the exact spot and same hand (her right) that works for me most of the time too. Well, that one gave out PLENTY of blood and we got to leave.
Kassie said "Mom is this all worth it". I said "For you improved health and to know that you probably won't have to go through what I have with all my health problems by being left UNTREATED for YEARS - YES - it will all be worth it in the end".
Thanks everyone for your well wishes. I know it must seem so insignificant - but I really just wanted you all to know I could feel your well wishes all the way - standing there and it helped ME to be brave for my precious daughter.

I totally understand i have a giant fear of needles and for shots the dr usually has someone holding my other hand because i have a tendency to move and such. My father faints just at the sight of a needle.
I hope it all goes well and for Kassie!

I totally feel for her. I have horrible veins also. Had my blood drawn yesterday for my A1-C check and it took several tries and two lab techs to get my sneaky vein - had to use the extra long needle - oh fun. Got a bruise now.

Re: Kassie is REALLY scared - PIXIE\'S please!
When she goes in, make sure she has the "best" tech draw her blood-if you tell them she's a wreck, they will usually have someone that's really good do it.
Also if she needs repeated tests, consider going to a children's hospital. They ahve equipment made for children.

Re: Kassie is REALLY scared - PIXIE\'S please!
I feel for her and you. My DD is traumatized by anything to do with doctors and especially needles. She still CLEARLY remembers getting an IV at age 5 (now she's 12) and immediatley shudders at the mention of drawing blood. Hope it goes smoothly for you.
