After responding to Robins post about her Minor league team it started me thinking of some of the great baseball memories I've had.. After the way I went ga-ga over the Steelers & their Super Bowl win you would think it was my favorite sport but it's not.. I love to watch football on TV but live.. there's nothing better than Baseball!!!

What are some baseball memories you'd like to share???..

I've got tons but will try to give the readers digest version of each ( or else I'd need several posts [img]/ubb/images/graemlins/smirk.gif[/img])
In 1971 I remember riding my banana seat bicyle all around my block yelling WE WON! after the Pirates won the world series
In 1979 the Pirates won the World Championship.. I was babysitting the night they won & remember waking the kids to see the final outs.. my highlight of that year was getting to meet John Candelaria after his no hitter.
When we knew 3 rivers stadium was going to be demolished for a new stadium Jim & I decided to buy up tickets for the final weekend.. then we got an offer in the mail for group sales & decided it would be a neat idea to have the boys have a combined birthday party at the final game.. so we rented a school bus, took 30 kids & 10 chaperones to the final home game at Three rivers stadium.. The kids had a blast & we got to be on the jumbotron ( kids took off their shirts & were waving them) I sat there in tears as they introduced many old time pirates.. Richie Hebner, my crush-John Candelaria, but the highlight had to be Willie Stargell throwing out the final pitch.. who would have known he would be gone before the opening day the following year? [img]/ubb/images/graemlins/frown.gif[/img]

closer to home, I have such great memories of watching my kids play baseball & softball.. highlights were Jamie's team making it to the Championship game ( but losing) & seeing him & his teamates still smiling with their arms around each other.
Brendan winning the championship last year... to see the joy of my babies face.. I was in tears!!!

AND lest we forget the Rock N Roller coaster bet.. I told Jamie if he won a trophy in the all star game I would ride RnRc with him well they took second & Jim got to introduce all of the kids ( he was coach) to come up for their trophies.. I stood there bawling as Jim introduced every boy with a little tid bit about them "Here's our clutch hitter.." & Jamie was last & Jim introduced him as " My son, Jamie, My heart.. I am so proud of you!! & love you" Jamie, being a typical 9YO was mouthing rock n roller coaster to me during all of this... & yes, I did ride it, just for him & just with him!!!

Oh wow, I have so many baseball memories! We're all huge baseball fans [img]/ubb/images/graemlins/woot.gif[/img]

1. I played softball for 6 years, and my brother played baseball for 10, always for Joe Torre East Highway LittleLeague right here in Marine PArk. One year when we were younger we both played t-ball and wound up being on the same team. I was 9 and he was 7 and a half. It was in 1996 when the Yankees won their first world series in a while. We got to all be in the Ticker-Tape parade through the streets of Manhattan, and it was absolutely ridiculous! Regis and Kelly interviewed my dad with Mike and I standing with him (we have it on tape, it's so funny to watch!) and it was just absolutely incredible walking alongside the New York Yankees, while MILLIONS of Yankee fans cheered us on. Ticket-Tape, streamers, and balloons were constantly being dropped by fans in the skyscrapers, and the entire experience was just unbelievable.

2. I LOVED going to my brothers games. He was always awesome and played with older kids, and I always wound up having a HUGE cruch on someone on his team [img]/ubb/images/graemlins/blushing.gif[/img] [img]/ubb/images/graemlins/roflmao.gif[/img] It was so much fun watching his games. The fields were gorgeous, and my entire family would come to watch him three nights a week. We would put our chairs out, I would hang out with the friends who came with me, and we lounge around the field watching the game as the sun set. I'll admit most of the fun I had had to do with all the cute boys [img]/ubb/images/graemlins/roflmao.gif[/img] But it was when I was young and would get SO excited to see whoever I had a crush on. Aw, puppy love [img]/ubb/images/graemlins/love.gif[/img] [img]/ubb/images/graemlins/grin.gif[/img]

3. I actually played softball with my best friends in the world. One of them was my friend Nicole who had been my best friend since pre-k. We signed up together and wound up meeting our friends Jen and Vicky. We hit it off right away and were literally inseperable. Our parents were also all BEST FRIENDS, so we were always all together. During our games we would play hard, but we'd be the team who annoyed the other teams :smirked: We wanted to have fun more so than play, so we'd have a boombox and snacks in the dugout [img]/ubb/images/graemlins/roflmao.gif[/img] Our parents would have an even better time, and would bring chairs, food, and pina colatas/margaritas every week, and just have a great timetalking and watching the game. All four of our dads were the managers/coaches, so it was just great.

We would go out after every single game, either to get pizza and ices or to just hang out at someone's house. In the summer we would go bowling once a week, then go for lunch at Burger King, go on the roller coaster and play in the arcade at the small amusement park attached to the Burger King, and then all go back to someone's house to hang out and watch movies (I can't tell you how many times we watched "A League Of Their Own!). We would all spend every 4th of July together at Nicole's house, and we all wound up spending a weekend together in Atlantic City. I have so many UNBELIEVABLE memories from the ten years we were all best friends, and it was just an amazing time in my life. We still all talk, but we're no where near as close as we used to be. Aw, it makes me so sad to think about [img]/ubb/images/graemlins/zcry.gif[/img] We need to get together again!

4. Umm... OK, my last one is when my Uncle Ted brought my cousin Ryan, Mike and I to a Yankees/Mets game two summers ago. We've been to a ton of Yankee and Met games, but never when they were playing each other. We were in the 3rd row on the third base line, and WOW! Mussina was pitching for the Yanks, and he's my absolute favorite baseball player, and I was just thrilled [img]/ubb/images/graemlins/grin.gif[/img] It was an awesome, amazing, unforgettable night!

My family was from the St.Louis area so we've been Cardinal fans my whole life. We lived in Illinois growing up, but travelled to stl for games every summer. In 1982, I was in college, and my sister and dad waited in line overnight in the rain to get World Series tickets. We got to go to games 1 and 2 and it was the most thrilling thing ever! (right up there with singing with the Carpenters!) Anyway, if there was a way to bottle the energy and positive excitement that was in the stadium, it would be a huge seller. They won that year, by the way. It was awesome! It was before panoramic camera shots (at least for my family) so I took a series of pictures around the stadium and taped them together on my dorm room wall. It was a sea of solid red, so cool!

Now I've been in Chicago for 22 years and "should" be a Cubs fan (if you ask my DH) or a White Sox fan (if you ask my neighbors!) but I can't get over my loyalty to the Cards. But I guess I'm mostly just a baseball fan!

Also, my dad built us our own field of dreams when I was 11, way before that movie. We had 18 acres of woods, and 2 acres of open land. One was his "garden" and the other was our field. He put up logs and chicken wire for the backstop, built up the pitcher's mound and drug the base paths and kept the field mowed short for us. It was a blast and now with my postage stamp sized yard, I miss our personal ball field!

Here are some of mine:

We saw Nolan Ryan pitch his very last baseball game. He was in Seattle, injured himself, and never pitched again. Thank Goodness we got to see him!

I had the privledge of running the bases at The Kingdome in Seattle.

I had the privledge of walking around the entire field at Safeco.

Some of the greats I have had the privledge of seeing play in person: Nolan Ryan, Randy Johnson, Ken Griffey Jr., Alex Rodriguez, Cal Ripken Jr., Edgar Martinez, just to name a few.
