We're thinking outside of the box(the Disney box [img]/ubb/images/graemlins/grin.gif[/img]) for our next vacation and going to NYC. DS thinks that sounds like fun and would rather go there than Disney (but be those genes on DH's side of the family [img]/ubb/images/graemlins/confused.gif[/img]). I was hoping the PP would be done by this summer but I don't think that's an option. I'm nervous about planning without one, ha! I have just reserved several books from the library and have started to look at airfare. How much can I anticipate to spend for a hotel room? I wouldn't plan on splurging on the hotel being we won't be in it much, but we don't want something icky! There are 2 adults and 2 older children so a queen bed is a must!

Also, we would think about going in June or else in Oct. when kids have a few days off. Would either be a better time to go (crowds) or a cheaper time to go?

When we went this past Dec. we stayed in the city and luckily work paid for it. It was about 500 a night. I know there are cheaper ones and when I was looking most of the AAA rooms were all around 500 for a 3 star hotel.

I know others have gotten cheaper in the 200 range and I think many of those were 2 star hotels. Good luck! There have been several trip reports and links. I will try to post a couple here when I get them for you.

Being a New Yorker I can tell you it is just like everywhere else. If the kids are out it will be more expensive. I would recommend searching on travelocity or expedia. It allows you to determine where you want to be or which neighborhood you are interested in. I would stay close to the park but not right on the park. you will pay more for the location but well worth it. You will be close to not only the park but Carnegie Hall, Hard Rock, Times Square, Rockefeller Plaza and St. Patrick's.

We so wanted to stay right in Times Square during our visit last year, but I couldn't bring myself to pay the prices most of the hotels were asking. We ended up staying about 9 blocks away - and were very happy, as well as saving about $150 per night.

You'll have a great time- I would love to go back in the fall.

When we went in the spring, we stayed in a hotel on the upper west side. Unfortunately, we were there during a Revlon charity walk of some sort, and finding a hotel room was difficult. Ended up spending about $150 a night for a room on special at a small hotel; spotting fellow guest Hector Elizondo (and sharing an elevator with him!) was included. [img]/ubb/images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img] We were a block from a subway stop, so we gave up prime Times Square location and 5 minutes of our time on the subway for an extra hundred dollars (or more) to spend on food, souvenirs, Broadway tickets, etc.

You might also want to try Priceline. The biddingfortravel.com message boards are very good about posting information on the NYC hotels.

Thanks for posting my site, Dianna! I haven't updated it in a while, and a lot of stuff is spelled wrong, but there's some really good info.

The weather in June is pretty hot, while the weather in October in more mild. It's always crowded in the city so you don't nbeed to worry about crowds. When it comes to hotels, though, they're expensive... very expensive. I would splurge and stay at a nicer hotel, because some of the hotels around the city are pretty gross. Most hotels have great deals throughout the year, so just keep checking.

Oh my [img]/ubb/images/graemlins/eek.gif[/img], I wasn't anticipating that. As you can tell I'm in the very first stage of planning.

Thanks to everyone else for your input. I bookmarked the website, so I can read it after everyone is in bed tonight. It looks like it will be a great help. I like the info on what subway stops you need. I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed with this project. As I get into my research, I may ask a thousand questions! Going to Disney is so much easier, hee, hee! I feel a little more reassured knowing I can come here and ask questions and get answers from those of you who live there or have visited. I did reserve a few books from the library, too. They should be available soon.

Check TravelZoo. They post deals on NYC rooms from time to time.

Be sure to post where you end up. I will be planning a trip there sometime. The only time I've been there I stayed at the Sheraton Towers or soemthing like that; it's between 51st and 53nd and 7th Ave. It was free (sis won a trip), and I can't afford that place!
