As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!
Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

Help! I am going to New York for the first time in Dec!
My Dh has a conference Dec 6-7 in New York and it looks like I can go with him. It will be a quick trip with us arriving on Monday the 5th and then leaving Thursday morning. But I will have two full days so I need to know what are must see's during that time. Also, some suggestions on Hotels would be great as well. Thanks everyone!

Re: Help! I am going to New York for the first time in Dec!
Are you going to be in Manhattan, or one of the boroughs?
New York around the holidays is just beautiful. I grew up there, but don't live there anymore, some other PP that still live there will be able to give you great information. Make sure you see the tree in Rockefeller Center, take in the store window displays on 5th Avenue and my favorite, go to the top of the Empire State Building. Leave some room for chestnuts and a "dirty water dog" from a street vendor, take a carriage ride through Central Park and maybe see a show. Oh, and there's a HUGE Disney store in Times Square! Macy's is awesome for shopping or browsing, lots of museums and of course, the food.
Ok, next?

Re: Help! I am going to New York for the first time in Dec!
The first thing I would do is check out Maureen's trip report from earlier this year. There is loads of useful information in it and it's a great starting point.
We've been to New York for Thanksgiving and one thing I would say is a "not to be missed" for that time of the year is the ice skating at the Rockefeller Centre. Although we didn't actually do it, there was something very magical about watching everyone - it was such a lovely Christmas thing to do.

Re: Help! I am going to New York for the first time in Dec!
I would just add a few points. World of Disney isn't in Times Square; that's Toys R Us. WOD is at 55th St. and 5th Ave. It's about 3 long blocks over from Times Square and 13 short blocks up. It will take you about 20 minutes to walk it, I think, but remember it's COLD in NYC in December!
Some good NYC guidebooks to get that I found at Barnes & Noble, AAA Guide to NYC, spiralbound. Has Manhattan broken up into managable sections and walking tours of each. The other one is NYC Not For Tourists, which is a small black book, also breaking up the city into managable sections and listing such places as coffee shops, the nearest hospital, all the subway/bus lines and stops, etc. plus detailed maps of Times Square, Rockefeller Center, Penn Station, etc.
I would try to get tickets for a Broadway Show. www.broadwaybox.com offers discounts lists all the shows and their discount codes. Phantom of the Opera is swesome, if you've never seen it, and you can almost always get tickets. Or, if you're dying to see something newer, I would recommend Hairspray or Wicked, which will probably be hardest to get tickets to.
As for the "dirty water dogs" I'd pass on that; my friend Rita advised me NEVER to eat from them; the building where they store the carts every night is filled with rats! Yuck!
Ellen's Stardust Diner in Times Square is fun. They have singing waiters and waitresses dressed in 1950's garb, and they do everything from modern day, to country to oldies to Broadway show tunes. The prices aren't bad, either. Try to eat at an off time if you go, though. The place is always mobbed!
Happy planning and have a GREAT trip!

Rockefellar Center, Times Square, 5th Avenue has the World of Disney Store. See a Broadway Show (maybe get tickets to Beauty and the Beast or the Lion King if they are available!)
Take lots of photos!

If talk shows interest you, you might be able to get in to see The View, Tony Danza, Live with Regis and Kelly, Good Morning America or the Today Show. They are all generally live from New York, and a lot of fun, in my opinion!
Have a great trip!

Don't forget Radio City's Christmas Show, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the South Street Seaport. All of NYC is awesome at holiday time. If you have any young girls in your life, the American Girl Store is a great place to go for gifts, too. Enjoy!

Help! I am going to New York for the first time in Dec!
As mentioned there are alot of great museums including the American Folk Art Museum and the American Museum of Natural History. There are some great galleries down in SoHo. There's also Chinatown and Little Italy as well as The Empire State Building, Trump Towers. The must see stuff varies by taste. What are you interested in?

Re: Help! I am going to New York for the first time in Dec!
Thanks everyone! Keep it coming. I was thinking about doing the Natural History Musuem but I would probably spend all day in there and see nothing else so I am unsure of doing musuems. I am not really into Art though.
I am thinking of doing a show in the evening and then just seeing what I can see. Would a tour be a good idea? I have never been so it is very overwhelming.
We also want to stay in Midtown so if you have some reasonable priced hotels in that area let me know.
Also, how easy is it to get a reservation at Tavern on the Green? I have always wanted to eat there.

Re: Help! I am going to New York for the first time in Dec!
When we went in 2000, we got there at 1pm on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving and left the next day at 2pm . . . we were able to see a LOT and we saw a show that night ---- and that was WITH all the crowds showing up for the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade!!!
Here's my story of a whirlwind trip!!!
We stayed Mid-Town at the HoJo at 34th & 7th (right next to Penn Station and Macy's ---- and across from Madison Square Garden) The rooms are REALLY small and I was freaked out by the tiny elevator, but it really did serve it purpose for the night we were there! It was a great location, and it was totally cheap (we got it for $89/night but that was through a discount hotels site and we probably will stay someplace else if and when we ever get back to NYC!) Also, we parked our car in the garage across the road (One Penn Plaza) and it was $25 just for the 24 hours it was parked there!!! Parking's quite expensive!!!
When we checked in, we immediately took off to Times Square . . . we looked around in a lot of the shops around there and got our show tickets at a place in Times Square that escapes my mind right now (we were going to get them at TKTS, but the line was CRAZY long, so we went to the other place). We ducked into the Virgin Megastore to look around for a while because the dumb Backstreet Boys were in the MTV studios on TRL . . . lots of screaming little girls around! When they closed the shades at MTV and the little girls cleared out, we headed further downtown then hopped into the subway.
We went to the top of the Empire State Building (it was so COLD!) then got some (GOOD!) NY pizza . . . then changed into our fancy clothes and headed to Studio 54 to see "Cabaret"!!! We got to see the Ed Sullivan Theater while we were wandering around near Studio 54 waiting to be let in for the show! We met Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins waiting for the subway on the way back to the hotel (they're kinda snotty!) then called it a night . . .
The next morning, we got up, ate at McD's and headed to the Statue of Liberty . . . ended up spending more time there than we thought we would so we had to scrap our plans to head up to Central Park . Then we drove to Philly since our friends were expecting us!

I noticed they had a "per hour" posted too . . . and it would have been REAL expensive that way . . . but we lucked out and got a parking deal with our hotel reservation then too. Plus, it was 5 years ago . . . prices have gone up, I am SURE, a bit since then!
