As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Has anyone visited Mount Rushmore? All the years living in the midwest and we did not once visit - I'd love to take my kids out there now.

We have about 10 pictures of Devil's Tower! DH visited that with a friend before me. He also took in Wall Drug.
Mount Rushmore is beautiful. I did the Grand Canyon, Painted Desert, Yellowstone and the site of Crazy Hourse Mountain and a lot of other places on that trip. By the way my trip and DH's trip were both in 1974.

Devil's Tower...anyone ever seen "Close Encounters of the Third Kind"? THAT is Devil's Tower that they end up at. Wall Drug is a definate tourist trap...you start seeing signs (and I mean a LOT of signs) along the highway for many, many miles. It is a huge group of tiny little stores, all mish-mashed together. If you watched the first season of MTV's Road Rules, they stopped there and Kit bought a racoon skin hat at a store there...my daughter had to do the same! [img]images/icons/grin.gif[/img] It has a lot of kitchy gifts, some nice items, lots of great preserves and honeys...you name it, they got it. Honestly, I challenge anyone to drive on by after encountering all those road signs!
Mt Rushmore is impressive, vast, awe inspiring. They have a lazer show at night, but we did not see that. We met up with a moutain goat, (No Kidding!) in the parking lot...just moseying on through!

We visited Mt. Rushmore in 1999. We also went to Devil's Tower, Custer State Park, and we also visited the famous Wall's Drug Store Dx3 mentioned. During this trip we went to several Nat'l parks: Rocky Mtn, Yellowstone, Grand Tetons, Dinosaur, and Mt. Rushmore was our least favorite. It wasnt' nearly as big as I had imagined. And, after seeing all the wonder and majesty God had created, what man had done on that mountain just didn't compare!

I went to Mount Rushmore when I was about 13 on a tour to see the Passion Play. My memory could be a little foggy, but I do remember not being all that impressed with Mt.R. Not because it's not impressive to look at, because it is. And if you know the history of the presidents carved into the mountain, it would definitely make it more interesting. At the time I only knew who Washington and Lincoln were. But mostly I was disappointed because you weren't allowed to get very close to it. Maybe that's changed since the late 70's but I'm sure we couldn't get any closer than about a mile or two away, and that was looking through the window of the observation center. They did have those pay per view binocular thingies that so many other touristy places have, but I still wished we could have been closer.

We went to Mt. Rushmore last summer as a sidetrip to our Fort Robinson vacation. The Black Hills are beautiful, and it is one of the few places where you still see buffalo roaming. I also saw a fox crossing the road with a prairie dog in it's mouth - those food chain things kinda gross me out, but I digress. There are other attractions in the Black Hills such as mines, caves, the Passion Play, and of course Sturgis. We are going back in about a month. If anyone wants specific information, just e-mail me. We will also be taking a side-trip to Devil's tower. Steve, I have lived in the midwest all my life and this was my first time there also!

We did all the things that "Dumbo" mentioned. I love them all! Mt. Rushmore is amazing, as is Crazy Horse...I hear they've started progressing quite a bit more since I was there.
And you must, MUST go to Wall Drug. It's way cool...even more so if you read about its history.
I assume that they've still got "the Backyard" where you can get water from the original well and take you pic at lots of photo spots...all free!
OOOH...and they have excellent chocolate malts!

I just remembered a few more town in S. Dakota we visited: Deadwood, SD is just outside of Mt. Rushmore. It's a little casino town, but it still looks like an old western town. It is the spot where Wild Bill Hickok was murdered, you can see the very table he was playing cards at when he bit the dust. There's an old gold mine there you can tour.
Another great little town was Spearfish, SD. Definitely stop there if you're in the area, it had some great little shops and a big fish hatchery you can tour for free. We stayed in a great hotel there that had an indoor pool. All the rooms surrounded the pool, so you could look out your door directly on the pool.

I am one of those who will take the back road if it means I get to see the world's Biggest Ball of String! Wall has a "Life sized" Tyranosaurus Rex that snorts and growls at you, a TeePee from the movie "Dances With Wolves", and lots of other fun stuff. I am telling you, if you are ever up that way, it is a MUST DO! |

Great replies and hints. We are going to Rapid City in 2 weeks with all of the in-laws for father and mother-in-law's 50th anniversary (Rapid City [actually the Air Force Base] was their first home).
