Forums Closed
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.

So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.

Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.

And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm​. You made it all happen.

There are other changes as well.

Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:

We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.

It's time to move on and move forward.

PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.

But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.

So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.

And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.

That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!

If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.

So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Question ? for those of you that work night shifts

Hi!
I got a new job But I will have to work some nights. I was asked to work a night shift tues night from 8 p.m to 8 a.m. How do I recover from working these hrs so I can feel human?
Do you rest the day before you go in? Do you stay awake the next day after you get home, if you don't have anymore shifts scheduled? I really like my sleep and I need it for my hormones but I need to also take the occassional night shift if I want to keep my job, which I do. My kids are going to be upset that I won't be at home when they leave in the morning to go to school.
One night is fine, but I get dellusional if I miss too many nights sleep
Please give me tips so I can do this and succeed please.

Good Luck with the night shifts , they are not easy and I think everyone copes differently with altered shifts. I only do 8 hour shifts which I think is easier for recovery than 12 hour shifts. I do nap before I go to work. I come home eat. shower and get to sleep as soon as possible. If it's only 1 or 2 night shifts I don't find it very hard to recover. It's certainly harder when you have kids and the routine gets messed up but over time as my daughter just accepted that I work strange hours.

Roberta: would you sleep much the next morning? I am afraid that it will mess with the next night and I need to be alert for the Thurs. I am hoping that I can rest my eyes at work too, which would really help. I am concerned about doing this, but if I want to keep my job, doing a night shift 2 times a mth, shouldn't be that much for them to ask of me..I hope

So are you going to work on Tuesday evening & coming home Wednesday morning and not working again until Thursday day shift? If so I would still sleep when I got home but not let myself sleep any longer than 3 or 4 hours by setting an alarm.Then go to bed at your usual time and hopefully you won't find it too disruptive.

Okay, I work night shift. I only HAVE to work 3 nights a week, but I usually work 4-5 nights. I just worked the last of a run of 4 straight nights. I worked Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday nights. I have classes tomorrow and Thursday during the day, then on to Friday and Saturday nights.

Here's how to do it: On the day you're supposed to work: wake up EARLY. Like, 4am. Stay up until at least noon. Take a nap, leaving yourself enough time to get up, eat, get dressed, and do whatever you need to to get ready for work. Work. Go home, shower, eat, and go to bed. If you're not working a second night, then wake up about 2. That will give you enough rest to feel okay, but leave you tired enough to sleep when you need to.
I do not use any energy drinks or anything else to stay awake. I drink water to stay nice and hydrated, eat protein, fruits and fresh veggies for 'dinner' and frequently have a good, hearty soup.
Now, I'm off to sleep until 2.

My husband used to work 10 hour shifts Sun-Wed. He would then stay up all day Thursday. I don't know how he did it. I think he ended up sleeping in on Fridays (like until noon) and Saturdays. It was hard. I would think it would be even harder if it was an occasional thing. I would make sure you take a nap rather than sleep all day Wed. Leave yourself tired so you can sleep at night, but not delusional from lack of sleep. Good luck!

My husband works rotating shifts, and has for many years. His shifts are 12 hours, and it's roughly based on a nursing rotation. It is easiest to deal with if you do a forward roll. He works 2-4 night shifts in a row, and then has 2-3 days of recovery before he rolls back to days. It looks like this - DDDOOOOOOODNNNNOOODDDONNNOOO over the course of the month. He tends to sleep in on his days off, and naps on the days when he is starting a night rotation. When he is rolling back onto days - he likes to come home and chill for an hour or two, then takes about a 4-5 hour "nap" - waking up by 1 pm so that he can spend some time with us, and goes to bed about 10 pm, getting up at 4 am to do the next day shift.

I have worked midnight shifts before and they are very difficult to get used to. I would get out at 6:30 a.m. and go home to bed then. It wasn't natural sleeping that time of day so I would be awake by noon. Biggest problem would be weekends and trying go back to "normal" times. I found that I had to stay on my midnight schedule whether I was working or not. After six months or so I got used to it. I started sleeping on the couch in the basement becasue it was darker and that helped.

I am home. Yuck. I feel like I have a huge hang over

I work at a transition house. Last night was pretty quiet and the women had to be in their beds by midnigh and had my stuff donet. I quickly made up a makeshift bed in the office. I TRIED to fall asleep (closed my eyes)and every time I did, that darn phone would jar me awake. Finally around 4 a.m, it got quiet and my head just automatically started to fall asleep while I was sitting up-never had that happen before. Didn't sleep much, but was impressed with my body for doing that.
I came home, ate, and fell asleep after dropping the kids off. I slept for 2.5 hrs at home. I am up at noon, have a nasty headache. I have never rested so much without sleeping. I don't like this at all. I don't know how any of you can do it. I think I will head to bed at 9 rather than 11 and hope that I can sleep til 6. If not, I will have to take an Ativan. I have a big meeting Thurs at 11.

I admire all of you who do this. It sure isn't natural. I know I will have to do another shift but it won't be for another 1.5 wks or later. I just hope that my body will recooperate fast from this.
