Three Resorts, Two Friends, One Great Trip: February 2012 PTR - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Three Resorts, Two Friends, One Great Trip: February 2012 PTR
UPDATE as of APRIL 26th 2012: I forgot to finish this! But I'm working on it now. Please go to the final post in this thread and let me know if I should continue here or start a new dedicated TR thread. What you are looking at now is a PTR. Thanks--and thanks for stopping by! Have a magical day!
I couldn't NOT post this right now--because as of today I'm officially going back to WDW in February!
There are three very good reasons for this trip. First, I may 'have to' go back to WDW for research purposes. I'm working on a Disney-related project, and likely by that point I'll be finishing a major stage in that project--and may need to go back. I know--how awful is it to 'have to' go to WDW? Not awful at all!
Second, it is the last week with even remotely low crowd levels until...well...September 2012! As I'm currently enjoying an awesome career break from my teaching job--and may well be returning to said teaching job next fall--this may be the last time I can go to WDW for a while. (This is not to say that there will be no future trips--but this is the last time it will be super easy for me to say 'hey--I'm going to Disney'!) I credit Leximom with making me realize this. I wrote something in her trip report about my last trip 'being the last time I could visit WDW in the forseeable future'. I wrote that 48 hours ago...proceeded to be sad...and then proceeded to fix the sad by finding a week in the near-ish future that I could visit!
And third, it is the last week of my AP! I intended to renew said AP at the end, but first I'm not sure how to go about doing that (any tips would help--like does it have to start from the last day of my current AP? Because I know I can get a discount if I renew, but I don't know that I want the clock to start ticking in February...?)
Since the conception of the idea of this trip--you know, two days ago--and right now, it has changed GREATLY--and ALL for the better. And it will change even more! For now, I'll leave it at that...but with a table of contents for future posts that will begin tomorrow!

Hooray! Another trip! I still think you should try to get there for Christmas (specifically between Dec 21 & 29)...as I'd love a chance to meet you. But if that won't work, glad I can live vicariously thru another of your TR's!

PassPorter's Free-Book to Walt Disney World It’s hard to believe anything is free at Walt Disney World; but there are actually a number of things you can get or do for little to no cost. This e-book documents over 200 free or cheap tips to do before you go and after you arrive. You could save a considerable amount of money following these tips. Perhaps more importantly; you can discover overlooked attractions and little-known details most people whiz by on their way to spend money. Click here to see free sample pages from the e-book! Get this popular e-book free of extra charges when you join the PassPorter's Club for as little as $4.95. A club pass includes access to all our other e-books; e-worksheets; super-size photos; and more! This e-book is also available for separate purchase in the PassPorter Online Store for just $5.95.
Hooray! Another trip in the works is great! You do get a discount if you renew your AP within the renew period--but we usually find that it isn't worth it if we're not going to be back at WDW within a couple months. (Example--my AP expired in July--I didn't renew because I wasn't returning until October and knew that I'd be able to buy a new one in October and it would cover next year's October trip too!) I wish I had time to bop down in February, but Mardi Gras makes February trips impossible for me!
Yay!!! I'm following you all over these boards! Can't wait to hear more and I'm also interested in the answers to your AP questions...
the AP questions is sort of answered below--the answer is 'it doesn't make sense for me to renew if i'm not going to use it right away. this makes me sad because i like simply HAVING an AP--it makes returning on a whim so much more realistic! though i have to say i've gotten my money's worth out of this AP--after this trip, i'll have used it....for something like 29 or 30 days!

i'd love a chance to meet you, too--but there's no way i'll be down there over the holidays. my husband has a huge italian catholic family, so for us to miss the family christmas events would be an actual sin in their eyes. plus it is SO expensive to visit that time of year (as you well know--though i imagine less so with DVC like you have!) but i hope you have a magical trip! i'm jealous--as you may know, i super wanted to see the osbourne lights this year. ah well--maybe next year! perhaps, if i'm not back in the classroom, i can arrange a trip that hits the end of the F&WF and the beginning of the holiday season!

ok--so the clock would start ticking right away. ah well--i guess i don't NEED an AP. though they are kind of addictive, aren't they?
i'm jealous--attend mardi gras is on my bucket list. though it is a rather long bucket list and contains mainly travel destinations!
Yay!! I'm so glad you have to go back again! And I'm excited about the plural hotels part too.... looking forward to your details!!!

Ok! Now that more is settled, on with the PTR. Up next is 'Cast of Characters'--and what characters they are!
While this was kind of a 'what the heck--I should just go' sort of trip, it went VERY QUICKLY from a solo trip to a trip with two of the people I love the most in the world (aside from my husband, that is!) First, I sent a random 'hey--you don't happen to want to go to Disney with me in February, do you?' message to my passporter and now real-life friend Melissa Sue. And guess what? She DID want to come! Hooray!
And then I told my mom I'd be going. I was all proud that the week I chose to go did not overlap with her first DVC stay--at Vero Beach. I needed to not overlap because, well, I take care of her cats when she and her husband are away. But what I failed to notice was that I'd selected the week AFTER her Vero Beach trip. Well, this did not escape HER attention--so she came running over that very night (last Friday) with her DVC book and a plan. She would go directly from Vero Beach to WDW (dropping her husband off at the airport!) and spend a few days with me in Disney! She let her husband pick their first DVC stay--and he picked Vero Beach. This gave her the chance to do what SHE really wanted to do, too--go to Disney. So she called her DVC rep...and the rest is history.
And so, I will be arriving in WDW on February 23rd and staying with my mom until the 26th...at which point I will move to a new resort and meet up with Melissa Sue!
But where are we staying? And why THREE resorts? All that and more...next!
Yes, where are you staying? Don't leave us hanging! Can't wait to hear what your mom picked as her first DVC stay. Since you already did AKL, I am going to guess Beach Club.
