National Constitution Center, Philadelphia, PA - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

I'm so excited! I'm going to Philly next month to attend a conference at my alma mater! It's been at least 8 years, if not more, since my last visit! One of the things I really want to see is the National Constitution Center which wasn't around when I was in college.
Does anyone have any must-see's while I'm at the Center? How long would it take for me to get a good look at everything? I can spend up to 5 hours there, so I'm really hoping that's going to be enough.
While we're at it, anything else new in Philly that wasn't around 10+ years ago that I should see?

I haven't I've been to the betsy ross house / ben franklin/ independance mall
I'm not sure what is a must but I know independance mall is a must its where the constitution was written and the film national treasure was filmed
You can spend the better part of your 5 hours at the National Constitution Center. There are exhibits and shows that can take at least a few hours to see if you do all of them.
Thanks! I went to college in Philly, so I've seen almost all of the historical stuff...it's the National Constitution Center I really want to see this time. It sounds like there's a lot to do there, and I'm glad that 5 hours should be enough for me to catch all if not most of it. I was also wondering if there's anything at the Center that I just can't miss! Thanks!

There was just an article in our local paper about the newest addition to Independence Mall - "The President's House"The President's House in Historic Philadelphia which just opened in December. I thought it looked pretty cool!

Thanks! That looks really interesting! I may go check that out since it's just down the street from the Constitution Center!

Personally, I don't think you would need more than 3 hours at the National Constitution Center, if you exclude whatever the temporary exhibit is. As with most things, much has changed since your last visit. Personally, I think the restaurant scene has greatly improved in the past five years. Do some digging and plan some great meals for yourself.
I the National Constitution Center!! Here is a link to the official website constitutioncenter.org. There is always something cool to see there! When in Feb. are you coming and what was your alma mater?

I will be there the last weekend of February. I'm giving myself 5 hours to do the National Constitution Center and to walk around Old Town to see what's different. I graduated from Penn, so I spent many a weekend in Center City! I'll be spending most of my time on campus for the conference, so aside from those 5 hours, I won't have much free time. I wish I could spend more time exploring, but unfortunately I'll only be there for the weekend. Hopefully I'll be back again soon!
DouglasE, the restaurant scene really has improved a lot since my college days! One of the last times I was in town was when Morimoto opened his restaurant (yeah, it's been a while!). My brother (who was living in Maryland at the time) and I went to his restaurant about a month or two after it opened. He was there that night and came to our table to chat with us. I wish I could spend more time trying new restaurants, but most of my meals will be covered by Penn at the conference. I'm definitely going to go grab some quick grub at Reading Terminal, tho!
If you think of anything else I should see, please let me know!

i've been to the constitution center several times on field trips (i teach 8th grade) i wouldn't want to be there for more than three hours. it is a neat space with lots of things to look at and do but even with toting 260 kids around (which is time consuming!) we've never spent more than that amount of time there. be sure to catch the show in the theater in the round. i think it is called 'we the people'. very moving, even after having seen it three or four times (and i'm not a very patriotic american, either). the visitor's center across the street (which is also new since you've lived here) is good for clean free restrooms and a bottle of vitamin water, but that's about it.
as for restaurants, my husband and i love parc on rittenhouse square. not sure if that was there when you lived here (but likely if you were in college, you couldn't afford to eat there anyway!) we enjoyed it more than actual restaurants in actual paris.
My family attended a dinner at the Constitution Center. The group we were with had the privilege of having the entire museum to ourselves for the evening. We felt that it was a wonderful opportunity to really get up close to the history we all know, but don't always appreciate.
I agree that you should not miss the "We the People" show. It is inspiring and thought provoking. We also found the exhibit with the life size bronze statues of the signers of the constitution fascinating. I think it is called Signers Hall. You can walk right amongst the statues and it is just like being right there with the real people - those who signed and the few that did not.
There are a lot of hands on exhibits and computer "games" that are really excercises in discovering your own feelings and interpretation of constitutional law. This place is a haven for any history buff.

I definitely plan to watch the show! I've heard lots of great things about it, and now from all of you here as well.
I recently read a book authored by a Penn history professor: Plain, Honest Men by Richard Beeman. It's about the making of the Constitution and it's almost like a running history of what went on during each day of the deliberations as well as a little background "color" on the personalities of the delegates (some of which was really entertaining and a bit surprising!). It's a really fascinating read if you're interested in history.
Parc Bistro sounds really interesting. I looked it up and saw that they offer brunch. I may try to squeeze in a meal before I head back to the airport! Thanks for the recommendation!
