OK, we have all read Steve's "Y'All" a few times, so, what is a saying that is common to where you live? Are you from "OH MY HECK" Utah? Or are you from Canada, EH?
Me, I am from the State of Washington, and I hear the term "Pertnear" a lot. You know, as in, "Look Ethel, it's a quarter to 5, pertnear quitin' time." We also call carbonated drinks "pop", and running shoes are "tennis shoes". SO, fess up y'all, what do they say in your neck of the woods?

Well, in Tennessee they say "Y'all", but being from Philly, I still say Youse Guyz.

Well, I've managed to avoid the New Jersey accent; however, after spending the last year working out of a construction site (for the real estate developer), I would have to say that one of the favorite area slogans is "oh, *%$)*#!@"

Well, in NC where I grew up we took y'all one step farther and made it "all y'all", which is kinda redundant but it works like this: "All y'all come over for dinner Sunday after church."

Then there is "and them" which means the rest of a family. "Did you call Vernon and them to see if they were coming too?"

One I've come across from Virginians native to the mountains on the outskirts of metro DC is "down country" which means to go to Washington. "We're going down country to visit the Smithsonian."

Then there are our fine Maryland neighbors who, when they say they are going to Ocean City, MD, say, "We're going down to the ocean, hun." which is pronounced "weergoindowndoceanhon." These folks are natives of "Balmer" or what we call "Baltimore".

As a life long resident of the great state of Georgia, I am a wealth of home grown sayings. My yankee friends used to ask me to say things because they liked to laugh at my accent. I told them I use the King's english--King as in Elvis that is!

Here in GA, "dinner" is the meal you eat at noon: Breakfast, dinner, supper

"Fixin" is a well used word: I am fixing to go to the store; she is fixing to get a whuping. A "whuping" is a spanking!

Ain't is a very proper term: "Aint" Jenny and Uncle Joe; fixing to go visit my great "aint" Rose. Just use where you would say "aunt"

My grandparents used to "commence": I commenced to cleaning the floor; she commenced to tell me the story, etc.

And by the way, WDW is located in the state of "Flarida" not "Floorida" like the rest of you say!

This is too much fun to read! DH has been down here in the pandle almost 20 years; but I've only been here for two. Everyone around here refers to me as "you know Elaine, she's Keith's Yankee woman"! [img]images/icons/blush.gif[/img] [img]graemlins/blush.gif[/img] . I'm a "city girl" and this is definitely "Mayberry RFD". I hadn't realized until my mom moved to the Atlanta area with UPS in '91 and we visited my dad's stepsister in Chattanooga (TN) how you can't "LUMP" all Southerners together. They're all different depending on where they are from!

Oh, and "I'll mayhap come by later this afternoon." Can be anywhere from the traditional afternoon (after 12P) until 9 or 10 at night [img]graemlins/ukid.gif[/img] .

I work in Home Health care in Central Kentucky. Some of the medical-related sayings that I have heard around here are..........
"My leeters(sp?) are hurtin'" (meaning ligaments)......"Old Arthur's mad today" (arthritis)......heart-dropsy is another name for Gout.....and if someone is feeling ok, but not 100%, they may say that they are "fair-to-middlin'". My husband moved here from the Maryland-Delaware area. It has taken him a while to get used to "over yonder" and "down the road a piece" (could mean 1 mile or 50....who knows). Funny thread........

Well I guess that I will be the first "yankee" to check in! Famous catch phrases here are "Whatever", which can be put in many uses. Whats for dinner? whatever. Mom, can I have Jenny over? whatever. You want me to do what? WHATEVER!

I have also been told that we here say idear instead of idea(ideah), quata instead of quarter and the oh so famous..." Im gonna go park the CAAR(car)!

DH says that people say that we also sound like we are talking thru our noses! Hmmm is that true?

ROTF! My wife's family is from Boston, so I can relate to "idear", "quata" and "caaaa"! And when I first met my wife's grandparents and extended family up there for the first time (I was like 18) and they offered my a tonic (soda) I thought "WOW! [img]images/icons/grin.gif[/img] This is a progressive, cool family!". [img]images/icons/cool.gif[/img] Imagine my disappointment when a coke was placed in front of me. [img]graemlins/ukid.gif[/img] BTW - you do know that a coke doesn't necessarily mean a Coke, right?

It's so funny how saying are so individual to each area. For instance, do you have a couch, daveno, or a sofa at home? Do you drink soda or pop? Do you ladies carry a purse or a pocketbook? How 'bout you men, a wallet or a billfold? Do you wear tennis shoes, sneakers, or runners? Do you go downtown, or uptown? When we go over to the West side of the state, we are going to "the coast", no matter if there is an actual coast or not. Another thing I notice is there are states that are "prouder" than others about where they are from...MichelleC gave a perfect example by stating she is from "The Great State of Georgia". I do not believe I have ever met someone from Georgia who does not say it that way! Texans are proud of their state. We Washingtonians just spend most of our time explaining, "No, the state, not DC."

Ok, kadterp, you and I must be from different Connecticuts! I definitely use "Whatever" but not the rest of those. I have always been told I have a traditional Yankee accent - clipped words, no extra syllables and I pronounce the "h" in "wh" - "white" not "wite". We don't add letters such as "idear" for idea or drop them - "cah" for car.

This varies greatly from area to area though! As you know a "Mainer" sounds totally different from a "Southie" (South Boston). [img]images/icons/grin.gif[/img]

My daughter spent a week in Texas and she still laughs about how they would go to a restaurant and the waitress would say, "What kind of Coke do y'all want, Coke Coke, Pepsi Coke, Sprite Coke, or Rootbear Coke"? You are right Steve, a Coke isn't always a Coke...

I'm Canadian, eh ! And yep, I do say "eh"! But I didn't know how much I said it until we went to California in 2000. That's when I realized that no one else was saying it and I became a little self-conscious. [img]graemlins/blush.gif[/img] This is a great thread! Where I grew up in a small Saskatchewan town, we called hoodies "bunnyhugs" (nobody in Winnipeg knows what a bunnyhug is) and we also had breakfast, dinner and supper. If we wanted a snack we had a "lunch". Since we moved to Winnipeg I've had to become accustomed to "lunch" at dinnertime and "dinner" at suppertime. [img]graemlins/dizzy.gif[/img] I pronounce a few things differently - ie: Aunt is pronounced ant, not ont. But I say out not oot! Oh, and of course z is a zed. My front room (livingroom) has a chesterfield (sofa) in it. And yeah, a carbonated drink is "a pop".

Although things have changed a lot now, I experienced a real communication problem when I was a kid as we were driving down to Disneyland. At the first restaurant we stopped at,(I think it was in Montana, but maybe Idaho) my sister and I ordered a hamburger and chips. The burger was ok, but my chips were a bag of Lays. I had been expecting French fries! (Now, we call them fries, too). We also found out we couldn't order iced tea because we are used to a very sweet drink, kind of like tea flavoured koolaid. What we got was cold tea with ice in it! Something else, but it's not spoken, is you might notice some of my words I spell with an extra "u" - favourite, neighbour, etc. Or I reverse the "er" to "re" in theatre and litre.

Isn't it wonderful that we all have the luxury of being able to have differences and still get along [img]images/icons/smile.gif[/img]
