Run Ria Run –The 5K Weekend Warrior PTR *Updated September 22* - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!
Welcome! We're happy you've found the PassPorter Community -- the friendliest place to plan your vacation to Walt Disney World, Disney Cruise Line, Disneyland, and the world in general! Run Ria Run –The 5K Weekend Warrior PTR
Cast:
Myself: Maria, Noonie, Ria (pronouced like Maria without the Ma to my closest friends
Husband: Benjamin, Benny Bear
Where to start…
I guess it all started in Apri…l I started to see the two Crissys posting on the boards about the Expedition Everest 5K.
At first I thought that’s nice that they are doing that…better them then me…lol.
Then I thought well if Ben gets into law school in Orlando I will start training for the 5K and see if it’s really something I want to do.
Well Ben got into a couple of law schools but in the end he choose Orlando because they offered him a scholarship and because he knew it would make me sooo happy.
Ben and I are moving to Orlando in August (August 9 to be exact). Ben is starting Law School and I am going to be going to Community College out there…I am on the fast track to transfer to the University of Central Florida in a year or so …I am finally going to fulfill my life long dream of being a kindergarten teacher (no sarcasm here I love this age group of children). Today I got the great news that I am going to be offered a job on campus…so I wont have to hit the pavement when we move there looking for a job woo hoo!
We decided that instead of spending our summer in the hot Louisiana humidity we needed a change of scenery for the summer. So I talked to my brother in Asheville, NC and asked him if he needed a summer nanny. He was thrilled that I asked and Ben and I packed up on May 5 and moved to Asheville.
pictures of Ben and i on the Blue Ridge Parkway
Wait I know what you guys are thinking…what about the 5K …I am getting to it.
So we arrived in Asheville and I had already decided this was the summer I was going to start losing all the extra weight I put on in the last couple of years because I was in LOVE (love&marriage + Cajun food= more junk in the trunk).
here are some pics of us in love
vices...not so much the oysters but the Abita Ambers I put away while eating them
So I began weight watchers. The first week I lost 3 lbs with no exercise …I was sooo excited only 96 lbs to go …lol.
me eating no fat no fun frozen yogurt
The next week was a little more difficult b/c that’s the week we went apartment hunting in Orlando/ 2 nighter at the Pop Century including the P&PP. Well I made good food decisions and even had a couple of cocktails (and a dole whip) and I lost 2.5 more lbs….I was so excited..
We returned to Asheville and I decided to start training for the 5K…
I am following the Couch to 5K plan and I am on Week 5 of training and feel great. I am now down 19 lbs since May 12…woo hoo! I am sooo excited about the idea of running a race through the AK at night and the after party.
Back to the moving…
I was a little upset that I wasn’t going to be able to write TR’s anymore b/c I am living so close to WDW (30 minutes away) …but then I read Maureens TR “Doing Disney Like “Normal People” …and I thought hey I can still write TR’s …which I love to do.
So our first weekend trip to the world will be September 26-28 for the 5K…more details coming soon.

Great start, Maria!! Congratulations on your weight loss!!! I am so excited by your motivation!! You look great!!
I, too, put on some weight in recent years. I was always very thin, but then I developed a foot condition, needed surgery and the rest was history. Things got away from me, but now I'm motivated to take it off! Wii Fit has been my vice, but is there a link to this Couch to 5K? I'd be interested in looking at it!
great start maria

Great start Maria. I don't know why I didn't put two and two together when seeing your Dole Whip picture. So I apologize for just calling you Starla for the last couple of weeks. Great start to your pre trip report. I guess since you and Crissy's have started I need to get mine started as well.
Congrats on the weight loss. Looking forward to more.

I was never a thin girl...but recently I have just been packing on the lbs. I can't blame it on anything except that my mom and aunts cook the best food in South Louisiana...and I am also an emotional eater so I eat to celebrate and I eat when I am sad...but i a working on all of those issues.

Starla was a high school nickname...lol. It seems like I have always been called anything but Maria...my niece and nephew call me Taunt Noonie which has now made my whole family call me this and my friends call me Ria and my DH calls me Ria-Bear...lol.
Couch to 5K is getting tougher I finished day 2 of Week 5 today...i have to admit it was a little rough...but I did it!

I think it is great you are going to be a K teacher. They are so cute at that age. I like first grade best myself. Great start to the TR. I can't wait to meet up at EE5K. Good luck moving!
I admire your determination to keep running, even though it's getting harder. I have a friend who runs 140 miles a week to train for marathons (he's ranked 19th in the country). He has told me about how vigorous the training is, but how much he absolutely loves it!!

When you list it all ...it sounds like I am doing a lot...but I am taking everything one day at a time.

Well I was a daycare employee for two year in charge of a group of seven 2 year olds...I knew that i loved it but it wasnt the best age range for me...I also know that I am terrible with teenagers (or most teenagers)...I work the best with 4-9 year olds based on my past experience.
We def have to meet up at the 5K...I will keep in touch about that.

Maria!! Keep up the hard work!!
My brother who I am living with now is an avid Marathon runner...I think he has done 7 or 8 of them and is working to qualify for Boston...I am just working not to collapse at the finish line....
Yay i didnt realize you were getting started!!! But i'm thrilled to see that you did! Okay, like tammy, i too am guilty of calling you starla. Sorry
I'm so glad that we inspired you to do this somewhat. I remember when we first started posting NO ONE was interested. But, now its building and its great to share this with fellow PP's.
I'm SOOO happy for your success so far and you really inspire me because i feel so nervous about it all inside but its great to have people we can talk about the nervousness with!
A few comments I LOVE abita beer...actually turbo dog is my fav*L* I think Louisiana put out the best american beer i've ever had with that brand!
Loved the comment about love & marriage = junk in the trunk :rotfl2: I agree...i gained 15 pounds over the past two years with all the LOVE +southern food period! They say when you are in love you gain together and we sure did!
Congrats on the job!!!! I cant wait to hear all about how your move goes and not much longer to wait huh???
Well i sure cant wait to meet you at the race and so excited to hear all about everything!!!
