Can you indulge me? It's my turn for a GS Cookie rant... - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.

Can you indulge me? It's my turn for a GS Cookie rant...
... this one from Mama Bear who can't explain to her 8 year old why "people do that" It's kind of long -- sorry!
There are two GS in our church -- my DD and another Brownie, different troop/grade/school district/service unit. The other mom is a friend of mine -- we scrap together, share GS ideas, etc.
I won't let DD sell cookies at church on Sundays. This other family hasn't attended since Sept because of an "issue" with the Sunday School schedule, and will proudly tell you that they haven't attended because of it.
Cookie "go day" was a Saturday. The next day, other mom shows up after 1st service, stands in the narthex w/cookie order form on a clipboard. Her daughter is nowhere to be seen.
I did let DD take her form to church Wednesday nite, when we have a family supper, and family activities, choir practice, etc. A couple of people had asked about the sale, so she took her vest and order form. She sold a few additional boxes, and got some "I already ordered" responses, all of which was fine.
A few weeks ago, the other mom asks how many boxes our troop sold -- her girls sold more. No big deal. But then she says "You should sell at church. Jenny (her DD) sold a boatload there." I say nothing.
Fast forward to two weeks ago when cookies arrive. Lauren takes her cookies to church on Wednesday night so she can deliver them to the people who ordered. The next day, the other mom calls me -- "I don't know any of the people Jenny sold these cookies to. Do you know X and Y and...?"
The next Wednesday, the other family shows up (they don't usually do the Wed nite activities), and the mom comes to me for help finding the people she doesn't know!
But the kicker was Sunday, when people started coming up to Lauren after church asking for their cookies. Lauren was beside herself, thinking she'd totally messed up her orders because she doesn't have cookies for them. But they didn't buy from my DD!
"I ordered from somebody at church" they tell me. Like they can't tell my 8 year old (or me!) from this other mom!?
Grrrrrr!

I so totally understand your dilemma. The one situation I keep running into is I have 2 DD in GS and one year, a girl from my youngest's troop shows up at our door with her mom, they realize who we are, but leave the house and continue on down the block selling to our neighbors. I was stunned that the mom didn't have the courtesy to at least go a couple of blocks down rather than taking the sales away from my girls.
I always HATED selling cookies. I would give the form to my dad and he would bring it to work. I sold to a few neighbors.
Selling to people at church on Sunday is crossing the line a bit. I was never allowed to do that.

I guess people don't pay attention to the person they are ordering from and then by the time the cookies arrive they forget or just assume they all come from the same place so theirs must be there.

I feel what you mean.
We do not attend church any more, but when we did, the church had "Girl Scout Day", and that day, all of the girls sat at tables in the narthex (right outside the sanctuary) with their forms and ALL of them sold at the same time. AND, NO-ONE would be allowed to sell if they hadn't been to church for a long time.
I hope Lauren understands that while it's not fair, and it really stinks, she took the high road in it.

That was completely ruthless of the other mom and her DD to do that when they haven't been there forever.
I'd make her figure out the problem on her own-after all it is her issue. She was good enough to sit in the narthex to get orders she can sit there to issue the cookies/collect the $$.
Ouch, I FEEL your pain. I had 2 troops at the same time - none of the girls were mine. We had that problem every year. About 5 troops met at the church and finally the Activities Coordinator, said ENOUGH! She designated a Sunday for each troop (one was a Daisy, so they didn't sell) and drew numbers out of a hat. Booth sales only. That made life so much easier.
I'm on GS vacation right now, I'm off until a year from August. Then DD starts Daisies!! I'm actually starting to look forward to it again.
