As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!
Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

2 way radio\'s
I was wondering if anyone has brought a walkie talkie type radio to the parks. I was thinking about it for our trip in June, that way my husband and I could seperate but still have communication. Any thoughts would be helpful.

Re: 2 way radio\'s
Let me say first, welcome to the Boards! Glad your are here!!
Personally, I have never used them, although I may in the future- but have seen tons of families use walkie talkies. I think it's an excellent ideas. I have also seen people use cell phones- but unless you have nationwide calling plans with no roaming charges, that could be costly.
Motorola, I have heard as a few good reasonably priced models. I am sure someone else will be along to help you more.
Once again, welcome!

Re: 2 way radio\'s
We used the walkie-talkies on our last trip in Feb and they worked great! Sometimes there were other people on the same channel we were using. But we would just wait for them to finish, then we would call each other by our first and last names (so there was no one confusion about who we were trying to contact) We found the radios most useful when we were going to wait in line for something. DD did not enjoy waiting in line. So DH and I would take turns, one waiting in line and one waiting somewhere else with her. Then when it was time to go we would call each other on the radios. It worked like a charm. My only advice, turn up the volume and keep the radios close to your ears (we clipped ours on our backpack straps) with all the commotion it can be hard to here someone calling you.

Yes! Yes! Yes! We have used our FRS everytime. They have come in extremely handy and prevented us from getting separted from each other (and ds-8) I highly recommend them.

Re: 2 way radio\'s
Be sure to get ones with both channels and codes. Usually, there are 5-10 channels that you can use on inexpensive ones. However, those channels get blocked up pretty fast. Shell out the money, and get radios that use codes as well (up to 50, I think) so you can use a channel + code, and cut down on the amount of people who might be using the same frequency. I love my FRS (family service radio), and have used it at conventions, fairs, car caravans--it's great!

Re: 2 way radio\'s
FRS radios are popular at the parks, and are used by large number of the guests. The trick is to use a radio that has either "reserved" channels, or sub channels. Otherwise, your conversations will constantly be interrupted, and you'll be stuck listening to everyone else. Cell phone use seems to be up as well, as quite a few shows were interrupted by ringing phones.

Re: 2 way radio\'s
We got some great walkie-talkies at Sam's Club just before our March trip, and they were wonderful! The price was about $50 or $60 for a pair, and they have sub-channels, and a "ringer" so you can signal someone that you're calling them. I think they're made by Motorola...We'll never go to WDW without them again...DH has a bad habit of wandering off without saying anything...saves a lot of searching and waiting for him to come back from wherever...

Re: 2 way radio\'s
I would only add that you should make sure of the maximum distance on whatever you buy. We have Motoroloa walkie talkie's that go up to 2 miles and prefer minimal interference . Good if you are in the same park, not so good if your party is gonna be in more than one place. Wish I'd heard of the FSR before buying these. I need to make sure mine have codes and sub-channels.
I love this board!!!!

Re: 2 way radio\'s
I whole-heartedly agree with all the above comments! We use them every Disney trip, around our neighborhood, etc. One of our favorite features on our radios is the vibrate alert - otherwise to be polite, you must turn them off in shows. It's also easier to feel it vibrating when it's noisy around you than to hear the ringing. The sub-channels are a great feature too!

Re: 2 way radio\'s
Ok, so I'm clueless about all this but think that this would be a great thing for our trip in December. So, I need a family service radio with codes and sub channels that vibrate and can go a long distance. Does anybody have an actual brand and model number to recommend? How much are we talking? Thanks!

Re: 2 way radio\'s
All FRS radios are limited by the FCC as far as range goes since they only operate on a maximum of 1/2 watt of power, so that decision has been made for you.
Radios with GMRS frequencies reach up to 4 miles on a clear day on flat empty terrain, but must be licensed with the FCC.
Here's a useful guide for choosing the right radio... Collins Notebook guide to FRS

Re: 2 way radio\'s
Hi
We used 2-ways on our trip, the type with 14 channels and 38 subchannels. We noticed a lot of people tended to use the current month and day for their channel/subchannel combo (on December 18th channel 12 subchannel 18 was being used by at least three other people). 2-ways are very handy; try searching on amazon.com under Electronics for 'two way radios' for some available ones there.

Re: 2 way radio\'s
We have used them and recommend them. The only comment I have is instead of using a full name to call for someone, I suggest a "code name". That way, you are not broadcasting your name over the radio airwaves. This is especially helpful when children are involved...this way their name is not being used for everyone to hear, and they have something to call you besides "mom" or "dad"...because, believe it or not, there are a TON of "Mom" & "Dad's" out there...
