Forums Closed
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.

So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.

Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.

And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.

We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.

There are other changes as well.

Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:

We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.

It's time to move on and move forward.

PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.

But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.

So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.

And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.

That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!

If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.

So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

Babysitting advice

It's been a couple years since I've been on here, and I'm SOOOOO excited that our next trip is scheduled for Oct!! We're taking DS, which DH is pretty freaked out about, but it's a conference opportunity that I couldn't pass up so a lot of it's paid for. Woohoo!

Anyway, DS will be almost 15 months by the time we go. I know this trip won't be like our last, but we would like maybe one night to ourselves to go out to dinner, maybe do a few adult rides, etc. What's available for babysitting for such a little one? I know he can't go to the kids club or whatever it is. TIA!

Re: Babysitting advice

I asked the same question and people have recommended Kids Nite out and Fairy Godmothers. They come to your room and those that have used them really like them. I will see if I can find the link to my post.

Re: Babysitting advice

Babysitting is available, but be prepared for the cost.

Here's a couple of links...

WDW INFO - Kids Night Out

Disney even recommends them... WDW - Kids Programs

This site gives the Fairy Godmother number... WDW CO UK - Childcare at Disney

Hope these numbers help!

Re: Babysitting advice

Thanks so much!!!!

Does anyone have any personal experience with these sitters? Are they decent?? DS is super easygoing, but I'm used to leaving him with (over)qualified sitters and want to make sure these are good organizations. I can't imagine they aren't, but I'm just curious what your personal experiences have been. TIA!

Re: Babysitting advice

My sister use to work for Kid's Night Out, she loved working for them but had some scheduling problems with them and they wanted her to be available every weekend which just wasn't possible. Anyway...my sister is a 1st grade teacher and I believe they do a great deal of screening to find good sitters.

Re: Babysitting advice

We scheduled Kids Nite out for Oct also. DH and I want to go out for our Anniversary while we are there. I orginally scheduled Fairy Godmothers, but Kids Nite Out is actually sanctioned by WDW so I thought I would rather go with the one that they recommend. It is a bit pricey, but Kids Nite Out is actually a couple of dollars per hour cheaper if you are going out after 9pm. As long as the sitter shows prior to 9pm the rate will stay the same. At Fairy Godmothers, the rate goes up $2 per hour for every hour you are gone past 9pm. They did tell me at Kids Nite Out that they run State and National background checks, Child Abuse Registry checks and child safety classes. They are also required to go through training with Kids Nite Out as well as a WDW Orientation. Hope this helps!

Re: Babysitting advice

I remember reading how thrilled Coastalgirl was with her sitter. You may want to PM her for details.

Good memory, yes we were very pleased with the sitter we got from Fairy Godmothers. They weren't cheap, it was $100 after tip for about 4.5 hrs, but I don't remember the rate increasing...we were out from 7-11. The sitter we used was named Joyce, if that helps. We were paired her b/c the dispatcher noticed we were from Nova Scotia, and so is Joyce. She was in her 50's, very spry, a grandmother herself, seemed very competent. She had a bagful of age-appropriate toys, which our kids LOVED, but which probably would mean less to your little one! (At 3 and 5, "new toys" is a magical phrase...) When my kids were pre-verbal I ONLY left them with fully-qualified ECE's, and very occasionally my own mom (Mom was in her 70's, not as spry as a younger grandma), so I totally hear you. Joyce seemed very well qualified, level-headed and responsible, and my kids enjoyed the evening.

Worth it, IMO. Dh and I "did" Epcot, and it was really great...

Re: Babysitting advice

Good grief. I just called Kids Night Out for prices and whatnot, and they were very professional, etc, so I decided to go ahead and book it. I called Fairy Godmothers afterwards just to compare prices, and the woman who answered the phone after about 5 rings had a thick accent - very difficult to understand and it wasn't a great connection either. Then there were kids yelling in the background, so she kept asking me to repeat everything. Finally she said, "Can you hear me?" and I guess she couldn't hear ME cuz she hung up on me!! I guess we'll be going with Kids Night Out!!!

Re: Babysitting advice

We've used in room childcare, arranged by the resort concierge quite a few times.
They come in with toys and lots of questions.
They will take a very detailed account of what you want and don't want DS to to. You can approve the care-giver to take him for a walk around the resort, or even into the park (you pay for the attendant) the only thing they will not do with a child is take them swimming.

They have taken my kids on walks, to the park area in the resort, to the beach area, and made sure they ate, were bathed, and asleep. And, this is with a very high strung baby and a shy, withdrawn 4 yr. old. (who was bummed when she HAD to go do stuff with us the next day)
Then, as the girls have aged, one has always been either too old or too young for the kids' clubs, so it's alwys been in-room care.

Re: Babysitting advice

We loved Fairy Godmothers. Our FG was retired from Disney, one of the original Disney phone operators. (How cool )She came to our room early at the Yacht Club (we played golf)and she just hung out in the room with all 4 of them ages 8,6,5 and 3. We had connecting rooms with another couple. She took them down to get some lunch. Our boys also stayed at the Sandcastle Club at Beach Club which they liked.

Oh, you made me laugh! Thick southern accent? If so it's the same woman we dealt with, and she seemed very busy and scattered the three times we talked. I really, really had my doubts about the service, as she seemed so disorganized, but she did totally come through. I think she has about 4 different jobs...

Glad you found something that feels right.
