Forums Closed
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.

So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.

Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.

And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.

We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.

There are other changes as well.

Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:

We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.

It's time to move on and move forward.

PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.

But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.

So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.

And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.

That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!

If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.

So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

Friday 28 December – part one: “good luck, you’ll need it, the wait’s an hour”

The alarm went off at 6:00am, and off we went, heading for the California Adventure for its opening time of 7:00am, except this wasn’t like all the other mornings. We rounded the corner by Storytellers’ Café, and saw people coming towards us. I couldn’t quite fathom that. Surely they hadn’t already been in the park? I heard someone mutter about “good luck, you’ll need it, the wait’s an hour”, but again I hadn’t quite twigged.

We emerged, and saw the problem – the line to get in through the California Adventure entrance from the resort was unbelievable. We asked the Cast Member how long it was, and he told us “it goes round the building”. Oh boy! We decided to brave the main entrance at the end of Downtown Disney, fearing that would be nuts as well.

When we got there, there was no line at all, and we were straight through. I think we waited maybe two or three minutes to enter the park, and we were inside before 7:10am. I have no idea how long those poor people waiting at the Grand Californian would’ve been standing there.

We headed towards Radiator Springs, and the line already seemed to be insane for the Racers, reaching back to the cross street, but as we neared it, I went ahead to check if this was the right line. I figured it was, but I thought maybe the single rider line would be a possibility. I rounded the corner, and saw it said “test” under the wait times. Uh-oh… Sure enough, there was a Cast Member saying that the Racers were down, and they had no idea how long it would be down for. Ok, the last time we heard that, it was Christmas Eve night, and the thing was down for the rest of the night. I wasn’t going to risk waiting in that…

Instead, we walked on to Luigi’s Flying Tires, which was absolutely dead.

After one fly round it, we asked the Cast Member if we could stay on, as there was barely anyone in line. In fact, we ended up with one other couple and ourselves, and that was it. Oh my goodness, how much fun did we have, having the whole thing to ourselves?

By the end of the second ride, there were a few more people in line, so we graciously got off – not bad, my count for the Flying Tires was five times during our visit. I just love these things!

We saw the fire truck come out to do meets and I wanted to get a photo with him, but these Photopass shots were horribly overexposed.

We got some Photopass pics done by a great photographer. We told him we wanted everything, and that’s pretty much what he did.

As we were doing the photos, we noticed Lightning McQueen was coming our way, as he was switching out with Tow Mater for meets and greets, so we asked the photographer if he’d take a photo with Lightning behind us – and he said I was amazed, as I figured that would be something he couldn’t do, but he was fine with it, and the shot turned out great.

After that, we decided to give Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree a go. We were worried that we might both get sick on it, as we don’t do well with spinning rides, but a couple of people had reassured us that they were fine with it, so we figured why not?

Notice their eyes – we knew from our visit to the Blue Sky Cellar that the eyes on every Tow Mater are different…

Oh wow, nothing can prepare you for this ride. We’d watched it, but not very carefully, and had assumed that the individual Maters went round in circles. They went round in loops of eight, criss-crossing the others. There’s a lot of throwing you from one side to the other as you do it, which can be a bit unnerving, but we managed Ok on it. It’s certainly an unusual addition, and much more complex than you think at first. I was really pleased we’d given it a go.

With that, we headed out of the park, and saw the huge crowd about to be unleashed on the park….

Next: “now sir, I thought you would’ve guessed that”

I wonder why all those people remained in GCH? I hope a few realized there was a separate entrance.... Very odd! Bummer RSR was down again!!! But you got to ride the other rides, got some great photos (except the overexposed ones, yikes!), and with relatively few people around. Successful morning thus far!

Good idea to go to the Downtown Disney entrance. That other crowd sounds crazy! Nice job being able to ride the tires so many times! I hope you get to ride the Racers again!

Good thinking to go to the other entrance of DCA. Wonder why all those people were at the hotel entrance?! It pays to do whatever the crowds are NOT doing. Great fun being on the tires nearly by yourself. Hearing what the lines were like for Racers and then looking at the Luigi's queue-- crazy that more people didn't take advantage of that!

Too bad that once again you weren't able to get on the RSR, but at least you tried something new, and ended up liking it.

I wonder what the hold up was trying to get into the park from the hotel was. At least you made into the park through the front entrance with no problems. Sorry RSR was down again, but at least you had a chance to ride the other two rides.

It's been a long long time since I've been in the parks during Christmas/New Year week. So smart of you to try the front entrance. Even if it had been busy out front, at least there are a lot more gates to go through than at the GC!

Great morning at DCA. I've only done Luigi's once and enjoyed it. I'll have to try it again the next time we're there.
