A return to Switzerland – land of mountains, museums and moos! COMPLETED 12/4 - Page 62 - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears

Moving on with the current of the years.

It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.

I was just quickly scrolling through your pictures to get back to the start of this update because my tablet decided to be weird suddenly. Anyway, I though to myself, "That looks like Lucerne." And it was. We spent a fair bit of a day there walking around. It's another place my husband and I have both been to but not together and 20 years apart. Looking forward to this next part!

Wednesday 4 September – part seven: the Swiss have a Navy…
We headed upstairs to look for the restrooms, but actually found so much more up there…
Mark loved this bit, as you can see!
We headed outside when we were done, and they have what you can best describe as an eclectic collection of items outside…
… including some funny photo opportunities for Mark!
Next we headed into the boat hall, which wasn’t quite as good as the previous two, although in fairness Switzerland is land locked…
We did learn while we were in there that Switzerland has a Navy, presumably to keep control of all its lakes. We couldn’t work out what else it would be for.
We headed out of there, and saw the restoration work being done on this submarine:
It’s good to see so much work being done, as you can see where your admission fee is going…
We saw this little train running, and Mark asked if I wanted to go on it, but having seen how cramped the adults were in it, I knew if I got in, I’d never get back out again. In fact, I might just never get in full stop.
This view from above probably gives you the best idea of how small this thing is…
We realised that we’d missed the section on funicular railways and cable cars, which was in the boat hall, so we went back in, and I’m glad we did, as this is definitely something the Swiss do very well.
Wow--I Don't know how I got so far behind! I love the pictures of the piglets! The transportation museum look amazing and I know Mark must have loved every second of it!
I'm loving this museum. How fun!
Our Milwaukee zoo has a tiny train like that. And yes, it's difficult to get in and out of!!

Wednesday 4 September – part eight: if Mark offers to fly you, say
The final hall was the aviation hall, and we guessed this was the oldest of the bunch, as there were no escalators up to other floors, as there were in the other floors, and there was also no air conditioning here, something very noticeable, as by now, it was pretty hot.
I read the story of SwissAir, which was certainly a very up and down story. Here are the final parts to it. I found it quite sad…
Elsewhere, Mark attempted to fly a plane. All I’m going to say is if he offers to fly you anywhere, say !
We headed upstairs to see business and economy class on a SwissAir plane, which was very neat.
We headed outside…
… and Mark revisited his childhood on this. Don’t worry, he didn’t steal one from a kid, they are available to borrow!
With that, we headed out, having thoroughly enjoyed our time here. I’m so glad we finally got to enjoy this museum. It’s definitely one of the best we’ve ever been to.
We walked through the park by the lake with some superb views across Lake Lucerne.
The only thing that was a bit odd was that everyone was outside in their swimming gear, sunbathing. As Mark said, it makes sense, as they have no beaches to go to, but it was a little surreal all the same.

We were only a couple of minutes away from our hotel, the Hotel Seeburg, so we headed that way.
Finding the way in was quite a challenge, as the parking wasn’t exactly nearby, but eventually I managed it…
I headed up to the room alone to check out whether Mark should move the car to the other side of the complex or not. Wow, what a treat awaited me! I’d booked a junior suite, as that wasn’t that much more than an ordinary room, and heck it was Mark’s birthday today so why not?
When I got him from the car, he was pretty taken with it! Aren’t the views from our room just amazing?
We spent the next couple of hours, enjoying some down time, away from the sun, as it was now boiling outside. Of course, despite having factor 50 sunscreen on, I’d burnt around my neck, which is typical.
We did have some excitement when we heard lots of sirens, and discovered there had been a five car accident outside:
Hands up who thinks one of the guys in this photo was either sunbathing or swimming at the time of the accident?
Fortunately, no-one seemed to have been seriously hurt.
