As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Oh my goodness, yes. It's just such a beautiful building. I never got tired of taking photos of it during our stay and could've looked at it for days and days on end!
Aren't canals fun...I really enjoy watching them too. That pic of you on the bench and Parliament in back is definitely a favorite of mine. However all of the ones with Parliament are quote lovely. What a wonderful day thus far. The soup can was odd and that coming from me (Warhol museum visitor many times) says something.

Oh wow, I hadn't even thought about the canal freezing over. I bet that's quite something to see.
Friday 16 September – part seven: 5:00pm means rush hour!
We headed over to the tour centre where you get your free tickets to tour the Parliament building. I knew that it opened at 9:00am, but I thought I’d better check what time we’d need to be in line to get a decent time, as I figured the crowds would line up before 9:00am, and I was right. We were told provided we were in line by 8:40am, we should be fine. I joked that Mark could line up for both of us, but in reality, that didn’t turn out to be so much of a joke, as will become apparent in due course…
We headed along Sparks Street, just exploring the neighbourhood:
It was clear that they’d built new buildings here, but had tried to keep some of the older ones. I’m not sure the mish mash they created as a result really worked though.
Mark found a silly photo opportunity on the way…
We then walked around what remained of the National War Memorial. They had an exhibit, which was a really interesting history of the place, but nowhere did it say what they were actually doing, which I thought was a real shame. I had to look it up on the Internet in the end, and even then, apart from a massive clean-up, there weren’t many details. It has to be open again for Memorial Day on 11 November. Can you imagine the outcry if it’s not?
We ended up heading on to the Duck (or land/water vehicle if you prefer) at around 4:30pm, as we were tired, and sitting on the bus seemed like a so much better plan than sitting on the concrete outside. We were the first ones on board, and as such, snagged front row seats.
Gradually, the bus filled up, and eventually it was almost full. I was really surprised, as I just didn’t think there’d be that many people interested in taking a tour this late. Just goes to show you what I know!
We headed out at 5:00pm, and immediately hit rush hour traffic. As we were just behind our driver and guide, we heard the conversation about which route to take. From what we could gather, they normally go right, but because the traffic was so bad, they went left. I wasn’t fussed either way, as I knew I could get good photos on any route.
Here’s what the War Memorial looks like with all the work going on. Our guide Bruno equally couldn’t tell us anymore than they were renovating it and cleaning it.
While we were waiting at a set of traffic lights, I was able to snag some cool shots of our hotel, including our room:
Then we were on the move, seeing some other sights…
I particularly liked these flags. The flowers are those from each Canadian province and in the sun, the colours of them looked very vibrant.
This is the Canadian War Museum, which we were going to visit, given we’d seen a TV advert on it, but we’d opted for this tour instead.
This is home of thousands of civil servants – our guide made a great gag about civil servants not working, and then asked if anyone was one. Only one hand went up – mine! He looked so shocked, and I quickly reassured him I was a British civil servant and we were very different to our Canadian counterparts. Yeah right, I’m sure all the same jokes are made about us too!
Oh yes - the canal in winter! Locals skate on it all the time. Some even skate on it to get to/from work!
Great shots of your hotel. It looks much more grand from a distance, somehow. When you're walking right next to it, it's hard to tell what it is! Must be because of its position.
I'm glad your guide discovered a civil servant on his tour. But I do wonder if he had a punch line to say instead if nobody raised their hand!

The buildings are just so beautiful!!! You really have had some spectacular weather so far on this trip. Looks like they converted an old school bus for the tour!
