And then life throws a curveball...

Went to my Disney U class today, I think it will be good, but some stuff happened in class today that didn't impress me, first day and all, you know.

On the way home, my check engine light came on and I finally decided to get my oil changed. I've procrastinated too long and I knew it. I went home, changed, picked up younger DDs, and went to WalMart. I've had a shimmy in the front end, so I asked them to balance the tires while we were at it. I went into WalMart, shopping for shorts for 10yo who has had a major growth spurt since we got here and my phone rang.

20yo was on the other end, screaming, sobbing, hysterical. She had been in a car crash. I couldn't understand her, other than no one was hurt, so I told her to text me where she was and I'd get there ASAP. Only...my car was up on a thingy with its guts hanging out. To compound the problem, one of my tires was ripped, much like the one that caused us the problem on the road trip and the mechanic told me he couldn't let me drive on it (not in a mean, pushy, salesman way, in fact, he said, "As a customer, I can't tell you what to do, but if you were my daughter, I'd tell you not to drive another inch on that tire. ) He understood the situation and got me out of there as quickly as possible.

In the meantime, I'm texting w/ DD. Oldest DD had just gotten to work when she got the message, so she ran in, asked to be released from her shift and they sent her on her way. She got to 20yo before the police arrived. Also in the meantime, the woman called for an ambulance, even after 20yo asked her several times if she needed her to and was told no. The ambulance came and took the woman (who appeared to be uninjured) before the police got there. OK, so I get there after the policeman has already interviewed DD and cited her for whatever they call reckless driving here, or failure to maintain, I don't remember. He did put that there were no injuries. The woman's SUV hardly had a scratch and no airbags deployed, hers or DD's. DD's little Kia Tin Can, however, I'm pretty sure is totalled. The hood was crumpled into the engine. I did take lots of photos in case the woman tries to sue DD or something. Her ticket also estimated damage of the other vehicle at $500 and DD's at $4000.

From what DD said, the woman was on her cell phone and driving erratically, speeding up, slowing down. There was a light changing and she gunned it to run it, but decided last minute to stop and that's when DD hit her, not having time to react. That is a failure to maintain a clear and assured distance, but it still ticks me off that someone can cause that kind of damage to someone else's car by driving stupid and get away with it.

Oldest DD took 20yo to the ER to be checked out, just in case. She just called and she's OK, but they gave her Flexeril and Naproxen since she'll likely be very sore for the next few days from the brace reflex. I am SO very grateful that no one was seriously injured, but I have a gut feeling that the other driver may be a drama queen and be a problem down the road. Please send pixies!

I went ahead and took the younger ones to play minigolf at Winter Summerland (we played the Winter side) and it was fun. Not as fun as it should have been, but it was nice to get their minds off of it all. I took them to Beaches and Cream for dinner and had a nice time. We decided to boat over to the Boardwalk and just walk off some of the stress.

We're home now and I'm settling in to work on my next paper (that I was hoping to have more of the evening to do...)

Now on top of everything else, we're going to have to try to figure out how to get all of us back to work with 2 cars. Sigh.

Oh dear! I am very glad your DD is okay. That is just strange - the other driver I mean. Driving that way and then saying she didn't need an ambulance and then calling one. I would keep an eye on that one.

So Sorry about your daughter's car. I hate the law when it comes to rear ending accidents. It is usually the front drivers fault, but it always goes against the rear driver. Lots of pixies for everything to be okay.

What a terrible day. My middle son was hit on January 1 and it totalled my 1997 Corolla, which was worth a lot more to me than the insurance company. Fortunately DS called the PD, which was a half mile away, and they clearly determined it was the other driver's fault. I had three home and until I got a rental, one car. I did a lot of negotiating with the insurance to make sure I got a decent payoff.

I was under the impression that Orlando had a decent bus system. Is there someway DD and use that? or car pool?

Thank goodness she is okay. I know it sucks that no matter the circumstance, the driver that rear ends is the one who gets the ticket. I could start ranting about drivers who talk on their phones or text ( I actually saw this myself the other day) while they are driving. But I won't . I wish you that you get everything straightened out quickly. Good luck with your paper.

best of luck to you in getting this straightened out. the drivers down here are just crazy, especially around your neck of the woods. and people talking and texting on their phones should be illegal for the above reasons. unfortunately, there is that pesky clear following distance rule and the guy following the one really doing the bad stuff is always going to be cited. not fair in my estimation, but it is what it is. hopefully you won't have to get an attorney, but sounds like the driver of the first car is a bit savvy to all this....wonder if you got any witnesses to attest to the fact she was on her cell and driving erratically, etc?????
