Water, wildlife and wonders... a road trip around Scotland COMPLETED 11/6 - Page 44 - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Sounds like a good tour, that was informative and gave you a good sense of the battle.
The visitor's center reminds me a bit of the one at Stonehenge? It does fit well in the setting - blending in as it should.
Yes, you're right, it is a bit like the visitor centre there and like the one at the Giants' Causeway now I think about it, also National Trust.

Saturday 17 June – part nine: we need some more water! :jawrop:
This cottage on the Culloden battlefield was used as a hospital, but as we were told, they didn’t have a good record of managing to heal people. We heard that they could cut off your arm in three minutes, which was pretty good going, but they apparently weren’t so good with cleansing wounds, so the aftermath would probably kill you.
The most surprising aspect of what we learnt about the battle was the aftermath of it. They literally took no prisoners, hunting down and killing all Jacobites they found. I guess they never wanted the potential of a rebellion again. As for Bonnie Prince Charlie himself, well he got away with some supporters. He eventually sailed to the outer Scottish islands, and eventually he boarded a boat to France, never to return to Scotland.
Laws were also later brought in that forbid men from wearing kilts, stopped anyone carrying weapons and outlawed the speaking of Gallic. The only way they could do any of these things was to join government regiments. Very clever!
Our guide was very good, but she was also very quick at moving from one spot to another, which was really irritating, if like us, you were trying to take photos. Some of us ended up so far behind her, and then she had to wait for everyone to gather around her again. Why on earth she didn’t just give us five minutes to grab some photos, I don’t know. However, I have to say without her, I wouldn’t have had a clue about which parts of the battlefield were the most important and which to look at, so it was invaluable in that way.
We headed out…
… and over to Tesco, as believe it or not, we actually needed some more water supplies! We had lots of small bottles still left, but Mari and I had got through the big bottles we’d bought, so we stocked up on those, and some mints, and added a bit more weight to the car.
Then we were on our way out of Inverness and through the Cairngorms National Park….
We ended up in a stretch of roadworks, where the speed limit was just 40 miles an hour, and I know that was utterly soul destroying for Mark, and I have to say even as a passenger, it did feel painfully slow, especially as there was no-one to be seen working anywhere. I know it’s a Saturday, but even so…
We arrived in Kingussie and drove through what seemed to be a housing estate, which worried us a bit, as that’s not normally where you find a B&B. However, we didn’t need to worry, as a little further along, we found it…
The breakfast and living rooms were very warm and inviting…
There were two rooms, one downstairs…
… and one upstairs, which had our name attached to it. Raleigh was happy to swap, as we had the heavy suitcase, but Mark wouldn’t hear of it, partially because he thought it would have a good view, and he was right.
The room itself wasn’t too shabby either…
However, we did quickly notice something. There was no TV in here. Ok, not a huge problem for me. I’d already given up on seeing Doctor Who tonight, as we’d be out for dinner at the time it was on, but I knew Mark wouldn’t be happy, as he likes it on to go to sleep with. Oh well, not happening tonight then…
Doesn't much sound like a hospital to me...
Those clever lawmakers!
The B&B looks nice so far, good choice!

A quaint little B&B - and if there's only 2 rooms, I guess all to yourselves?
Three minute amputation?!
Is Gaelic very prevalent in Scotland now? I know it is still used to some extent in Ireland, but is one of those sadly dying languages for the most part. The signage is still bilingual it seems, but I wonder how many can speak it? My name is Gaelic.

Oh no, there were other rooms. I want to say another two or three maybe?

I don't think it's that well used, certainly nowhere near as much used as Welsh anyway. I was fascinated by the bilingual signs, given I'd always been told that Gaelic isn't that widely spoken in Scotland.
Saturday 17 June – part ten: that nearly knocked me out!
We settled down for some down time, and met up with Mari and Raleigh just before 7:00pm. This was the place where I’d tried a couple of restaurants in Kingussie itself, but none of them had come back to me, so I’d ended up booking a place in the neighbouring town, Newtonmore. We set off, enjoying the scenery on the way…
We found the Glen Hotel, and Mark somehow managed to park in the one, exceptionally tight space left, as half the car park was taken up with minivans. Mari and I were very impressed with the sign that greeted us as we entered…
When we went inside, we were told we could either have the pub side that had lots of character, but there was a group of 60 due in at 8:30pm, and we’d need to be done by then, or we could have the other side. We opted for the other side, as we knew our evening meals tended to be leisurely, shall we say? Sadly, this side had little or no ambience to it.
Oh well, I guess the food’s the same wherever you sit… The menu was pretty basic, which was fine with us. If you can do something well, it doesn’t need to be fancy.
Mari and I both had the poached salmon supreme, made up of Scottish salmon fillet poached in white wine with parsley and dill, served with potato of the day or fries, vegetables or salad and with your choice of red pesto and cream sauce (which I went for)…
… or you could also have Bearnais or sweet chili and ginger butter sauce. Mari was brave and went for the latter, and I think she pretty much had no mouth left by the time she’d taken the first bite, it was that hot! The worst thing was it wasn’t on the side, it was all over the salmon, so she then had to try and remove as much as she could… all I can say is I’m glad I didn’t go for that..
Mark had the slow cooked pork belly with your choice of potato of the day or fries and vegetables or salad…
For dessert, Mark went for sticky toffee pudding…
… and I had the ice cream sundae made with mint choc chip ice cream, vanilla ice cream, cream, and sauce, and it was just what I needed.
Mari indulged in some whiskey tasting, and I felt really bad, as when I went to sniff it, it nearly knocked me out! I could only smell antiseptic, whereas the others could smell peat or wood. I guess I need to work on my sense of smell…
It was a shame, because just as we were getting ready to go, someone had ordered the fajitas, and when they came out, they stank to the point where I genuinely thought I’d throw up, so I left the others to settle up, and got away from that as quickly as I could. Yuck!
… and then amazingly the Internet was working well enough that we were able to watch tonight’s Doctor Who! I couldn’t believe my luck!
The weather today was cloudy, with some sun and a bit of rain and highs in the low 70s. The best thing today was the cruise on Loch Ness The worst thing today was the behaviour of the tour groups at Urquhart Castle Today we tried visiting the Culloden battlefield And the result was it was very moving, and it was very easy to visualise where everything happened. The most magical moment today was being on our own in the boat out on Loch Ness!
Next: now that’s not what I expected to see in the living room!
