Forums Closed
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.

So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.

Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.

And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.

We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.

There are other changes as well.

Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:

We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.

It's time to move on and move forward.

PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.

But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.

So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.

And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.

That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!

If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.

So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

I'd be ok with a total revamp of GMR, but I would want it to still be based on classic films. I would love to see DHS stick to that "Hollywood That Never Was" theme, which I'm sure will slowly be removed as more Pixar stuff takes over. ( Dont misunderstand, I love Pixar. )

I know exactly what you mean because that's what I thought, too, but it didn't work out that way for us this past June. Like I said, it was a walk-on that morning -- our "vehicle" wasn't even full and that may be why we had the "gangster" version even though we were in the 1st car. Who knows? I like both versions, too, but I was tired of seeing gangster all the time when I knew there was also a cowboy version. :-)

Let's see... unused space... Premiere Theater, which hosted Hunchback of Notre Dame, is mostly unused, and the small sound stage that most recently hosted Journey into Narnia is dark (for now). The other former backstage tour areas are working attractions. Residential Street went away to make room for Lights, Motors, Action! "The Making of..." is now Toy Story Midway Mania, and part is Walt Disney, One Man's Dream. They also added Rock 'n' Roller Coaster and Fantasmic! (and Tower of Terror wasn't an original part of the park, either). American Idol Experience has been steadily occupying a theater that was dark half of the time, Star Tours was re-made, The biggest change may be that, except for the costume shop, there's no working studio facility on premises. The Magic of Disney Animation is no longer attached to a working animation studio. Disney Junior/Playhouse Disney/Bear in the Big Blue House has been steadily occupying a former restaurant.... Oh, yeah, Jaws is gone... no, no, that was Universal Studios... I can't find a shell or enough missing stuff to add up to a half-day, so I must be forgetting something.

The Ninja Turtles? Anything's possible, but they're currently owned by Nickelodeon, Disney's nemesis in kids cable TV programming. Nickelodeon used to have a corner of Universal Studios Florida, but that closed...

Thanks for posting this Dave! I was trying to figure out what all was dark other than Narnia and the only other thing I would come up with was the Drew Carey Sounds Dangerous (that what it was called?) and I think that has the sign ups for Jedi Training. If I'm remembering correctly. Regardless, I couldn't come up with much. This is definitely a full day park for us and at our most recent visit we did not finish all we wanted to.

When were the Ninja Turtles ever at DHS? I was there the first year it was open and I don't remember anything about that. I know you didn't say they were there but someone else did. Just to clarify.

I would just like to see the attraction updated some. I'd like to see new scenes and maybe a different story line

I had to look up Ninja Turtles. My first visit to DL was in the mid-70s, but I didn't get to WDW until 1996. Based on the description, it seems to have been a street show in NY Street, that ran from about '91 through '93.

I guess I just missed that. I was there in '91 but don't remember anything about it.

We went in '89 or '90 and we have pictures of my brother and me meeting the Ninja Turtles. That was also the time when Roger Rabbit was out and about in the park.

The Ninja Turtles were there in 90 and 91. They sang and danced and did martial arts routines on a stage back by the New York Street. There were also standup cutouts that you could take pictures by. My DS was a big TMNT fan, and I have pics of him in his stroller by the cutouts. He's 22 now.

I also would love to see the movie ride updated a little. Doesn't have to change format, but some of the newest films are now 30+ years old, and there have been a lot of great movies in those 30 years. We haven't even gone on it the last couple of trips--not even the idea of airconditioning was appealing.

another point about GMR

As Dave mentioned, the theatre itself is a landmark and represents Hollywood as a whole, we've always loved it as a family and appreciate the historical references of movie genres. In addition, they use the facility for special events. My company had a special dinner at GMR as a "walk-through" event. They take out the cars, and you're able to walk through, have a dinner set up in the gangster and western areas (along with cast members acting in certain roles to add fun to the event), dessert in the Wizard of Oz area and then a dance party with DJ in the movie area at the end. They also have to think of the multiple parts of their business. I hope it never changes to a 3D experience, that would be a shame.

I think substituting "The Godfather" for Cagney would be a great substitution, and I'd love to see "Tron" substituted for Alien. But I think I like the use of the animatronics (and the Wicked Witch of the West was one of the first newer ones no?) and this would be a great place to keep that technology advancing.

On a related topic, I do miss all the "studios" stuff. I learned a lot back when it first opened. I would love more attractions that demonstrated how they made the movie magic. I realize that a lot of that is done on the computer now, but even THAT would be pretty interesting. But please - no more attractions where I sit in the dark with earphones on.

I'm loving all the passion! I think I've finally found where I "belong"!! I love the GMR...I go every time and love introducing new people to it! Yes, updating would be good, as long as the essence is still there.

I would also like to see it updated, I find it a good place to cool of on a hot day, But it needs a face-lift..
Also one of the biggest wastes of time was Drew Carey's Sounds Dangerous what the heck was that all about?

Taking a nap away from the heat! I thought it was cute, and we loved to duck in there for a rest.
