Non-Sun worshippers...I need your advice!!! - Page 3 - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

I am the whitest person in the United States and I have travelled to the world twice and survived the sun. I wear a baseball hat with a large brim and cover all exposed skin with "29 and Holding" from Bath and Body Works. I wear cargo pants and shirts with an SPF of 30 that I found at Eastern Mountain Sports (Outdoor Gear, Clothing & Footwear at Eastern Mountain Sports (EMS)). I have never been sunburned and I've spent entire days outside in 100 degree heat. My bigger problem is heatstroke.
Yes to the above. As we were waiting for our flight home from Las Vegas we saw a poor, poor man who looked absolutely miserable. He was deep fryed from tip to tail especially his feet! They brought him to the waiting area in a wheelchair, wearing as little as possible. Seems he didn't need sunscreen, he naturally tans but this time he fell asleep on one of those floaty things that are designed to help you tan on both sides while you float in a pool. Evidently the only place not burned was where the speedo was. Lesson learned: sunscreen everywhere, often, and make sure you have a buddy that will alert you to pink areas before they burn.
Like I said, luckily I only got the sun poisoning on the tops of my feet and had a very hard time walking, but OK otherwise. It's also the only time and place I've been burned on the multiple trips to WDW.
But I know I'm white like Casper and the sun is evil, so I take necessary precautions.
I've begun to suspect that my somewhat-flippant answer may have been dismissed as not being at all serious ... but I really did mean it.
I go to WDW in January. Up here in New England, on a cloudy day, I can get sunburned within an hour or two. When my girlfriend and I spent two weeks in the World, in January, I fully expected to get repeated sunburns, and spend an occasional day hiding inside, letting my poor, abused ultra-fair Irish skin recover slightly.
I barely ever got pink, yet, every day was filled with gorgeous T-shirt-temperature and cloudless-sky weather. January, you see, really DOES have that much LESS direct, blazing sunlight than July (or similar). Which has made me understand the idea of having a WINTER vacation home in Florida ... now if only I can hit the lotto ... there's a $145,000,000 drawing this Friday evening ...
I am a redhead who burns easily. My current sunscreen is Neutrognea. One thing I have learned is to apply sunscreen beyond what's exposed. I roll my socks down, and my shorts and t-shirt sleeves up and apply lotion there. As you move around during the day your clothes move too and can expose otherwise covered areas of skin. And don't forget the tops of your ears.

The way some people find fault, you'd think there was a reward.
I know of a very good sunburn cure that has worked well on myself and also my dearest wife who is very fair skinned and she had red hair like our son does now. It really takes the sting out of it, and draws the heat out. Send me a PM for info on it as it might be considered a folk remedy.
I too am fair skin and freckled and burn, burn, burn in the sun; my DD has inherited the same problem. I use Coppertone Sport SPF 30. In my house we do (sorry for the term) naked sunscreen. This way you are covered if your shirt slips or you pull your hair up later. (DD got a nasty sunburn on her tush once when her swim suit shifted up.) You cannot tell we just spent a week in Florida, no tans but no sunburn either. I have burnt the tops of my feet and it hurts. Also, even if you sit under the beach umbrella, the sun can reflect up off the sand and give much more sun than anticipated. the same with a cloudy day; the sun can be just as strong, but you don't feel the heat of the sun. Good Luck
I use factor 50 and re-apply frequently and try and stay out of the sun as much as I can. When I can't, I always have a hat on and I drink as much water as possible as well.
The sun reflects off the concrete there also and burns the front of legs. For some it also causes the small capallaries to expand and pop. The skin gets a red rashy looking splotches. The doctor there called it "concrete rash."
I wear seersucker capris but I know I've seen seersucker pants. They are really light weight cotton. Perhaps with a thin cotton long-sleeve tee you can eliminate at least your areas of exposure.

That's exactly what happened to me last year at Cedar Point. My legs looked like they were bleeding but it didn't hurt. Just looked awful.Didn't know there was a name for it. I thought it may of had something to do with the G-forces of the coasters, but my dd and dh were fine. Oh well, you learn something new every day. Thanks for the info.
I need your advice once more. For some reason all types of lip balm with SPF spells disaster for me. I think I may be allergic or something. I've tried everything (well maybe ) I can think of including:
Chapstick products
Blistex products
Maui Mike,
The only thing I can wear is Chapstick All Natural and there's no SPF there and Vaseline.(might as well press my lips to a hot frying pan)
Any advice? Our trip is in the 30 day window and I fear I might have to hide my face and lips under an ugly hat or an umbrella. Your advice is greatly appreciated and needed.
TIA
Linda

Also don't forget the back of your neck if you have short hair or wear long hair in a ponytail.
While I personally like Blistex for my lips, my Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunblock (spf 55) came with a Neutrogena Lip Moisturizer (with paba-free sunscreen protection) that is SPF 15 that I also really like. You can probably pick it up at Walmart or a pharmacy (mine came in a package with the sunscreen from BJs). Good Luck to you.
