As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

I think most of them are right, but how can Saratoga Springs be 336 miles if Old Key West is 307 miles? Either it's supposed to be 306 miles, or they drove around WDW a couple of times before arriving at the Springs! [img]/ubb/images/graemlins/grin.gif[/img]
Cheryl, loving your updates on Hilton Head. I went there with some family in August of 2004, and although the resort was full I never felt like the pool was super crowded. There's a lot of golfing and fishing going on, and many head to the Beach House. The pool there was PACKED! Can't wait for more!

In the 19th century, the riverfront was filled with cotton traders, called “factors” who would buy and sell from the bridges that connect the warehouses on the riverfront with Bay Street above. That’s how this area got its name of Factors Walk.
Today this area is full of restaurants and shops and we wandered along, marvelling at the selection of shop fronts and getting some photos. We did go into the River Street Candy Company, which is world famous (or so they claim anyway! [img]/ubb/images/graemlins/grin.gif[/img] ) but I had to come straight out again, as the smell was so strong, sweet and sickly in there. I know I love chocolate, but this was more like fudge and that is not my favourite smell, following a rather unpleasant incident when I was a kid. [img]/ubb/images/graemlins/eek.gif[/img]
         
By now, it was about 11.50 and we had 10 minutes before our reservation at the Pirate House, so I thought we’d better head there. I knew it was in Bay Street, so it shouldn’t be too hard to find it, right? [img]/ubb/images/graemlins/questionicon.gif[/img] Wrong. [img]/ubb/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif[/img] We started to talk one way down Bay Street, but it just didn’t look right, so we stopped at an antiques shop and asked and they told us it was right down the other end of Bay Street. OK then, off we went, but after walking for about 10 minutes, I realised that we still had another 10 or 15 minutes walking ahead of us. I really couldn’t face it. It was cold and, to be honest, I wasn’t that hungry yet after the French toast this morning. We decided to sip it and after a restroom break, we headed for City Market to get a carriage ride instead, as we figured that we would get a good overview of the Historic District doing one of those and it would mean less walking. City Market
City Market is another nice area, full of artists’ galleries and some restaurants and gift shops. There were two carriage companies, both of which charged $20 per adult. One took travellers’ cheques and had an earlier departure than the other, so we went with that one. By now, we were really feeling the cold and the wind was bitter, not at all what we had expected, so as we had a few minutes to wait, we went to get a hot chocolate in a nearby coffee shop. The cup in there for tips said “either give me a tip or give me a kiss”. Well, that’s what I call subtle! Mark contemplated the idea of the kiss, but after looking at the woman, went for the tip instead! [img]/ubb/images/graemlins/rofl2.gif[/img]
Our carriage ride was literally just us and a mother and her son, who was probably about eight or nine. It meant we got a far more personalised service and could ask more questions and our guide Jackie, who originally came from California, was very knowledgeable about the city and its history.
   
As we went round, she told us a lot of the history and we learnt that the City Market only dates back to the mid 1980’s. Before we headed towards the Savannah College of Art and Design, she explained that their speciality was purchasing property and then returning them to us and they had done that with around 60 buildings now. We saw the building that’s now used for freshmen dormitories, but was once a hotel and it was the first building to be converted by the college.

Cheryl, I am enjoying your TR so much. Your photos are great. Thanks for so many photos and thoughts on Savannah. I'm planning a solo trip towards the end of October (for my birthday & because I love Paula Deen) and your pics and thoughts are great.

Sorry to hear you missed Pirate House - but I remember when we went to Savannah - it was quite a walk down Bay Street. Thanks for bringing back memories of a wonderful time.

I’ll let the photos tell the story of the rest of our carriage ride, but we saw a lot of the squares and most of the main historic homes, including the Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace, who founded the Girl Scout movement. We heard how originally Catholicism had been banned in Savannah, because the Pope was Spanish and the English rulers felt that if a church was established, it would undermine their rule.
We also finally found out what it was that hangs from the trees – Spanish moss. Up until then, we had thought it was a form of tree and didn’t realise that it was something clinging to the trees. Jackie even pulled some off, so Mark could see what it felt like and it was surprisingly wiry. To us, it just epitomises the southern states somehow, as whenever you see photos of the countryside in this part of America, this stuff is always in shot somewhere.

The horses on this tour were real characters called Murphy and Guinness, because their owners “like all things Irish”. They were playful as we went round, but they were excellent guides and responded well to Jackie. I didn’t once feel unsafe in her hands, despite all the junctions we had to negotiate. At one point, one of the horses (I don’t remember which one) decided to relieve itself at a junction and I was really impressed with the fact that Jackie then hosed the whole area down with a bucket of disinfectant.
Guinness and Murphy
If you do go to Savannah, I’d really recommend taking a carriage tour. It’s a good use of your money and you’ll learn a lot and I felt a bit like Royalty as well. The number of people who took photos of us was amazing! [img]/ubb/images/graemlins/cool.gif[/img]
When we got back to City Market, we headed back to the car park. By now, we were both freezing, although I had managed to keep the cold at bay by taking so many photos! [img]/ubb/images/graemlins/grin.gif[/img] We paid – just $2.50, which I thought was really good value! [img]/ubb/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif[/img] ) and headed out and Mark asked where the nearest Best Buy was. Well, there’s one in Beaufort, so we decided to go there, only when I said that, I didn’t realise that it would be a 40 mile round trip out of out way. Oh well! [img]/ubb/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif[/img]
It’s an adventure, but the nearer we got to Beaufort, the hungrier I got. Remember that we now hadn’t eaten since breakfast and it was past 2pm now. [img]/ubb/images/graemlins/jawdrop.gif[/img] As soon as we found the mall, my first priority was to find some food and quickly I saw a Subway and thought that will do me. In we went and the phone rang just as we walked in – it was Wendy. [img]/ubb/images/graemlins/cool.gif[/img] I told the woman that I would have a make your own sandwich and told her a couple of bits that I wanted in it. The next thing I saw she’s stuffing meat in it! [img]/ubb/images/graemlins/eek.gif[/img] Oh no, you don’t! [img]/ubb/images/graemlins/mad.gif[/img] I then had to explain again what I wanted. I’m sorry, but to my mind, make your own means that you say what’s going to go in there, not that they decided. Finally I got what I wanted and we settled down to eat.
That done, we went into Best Buy with me telling Mark that after coming all this way out, he’d better find what he wanted. [img]/ubb/images/graemlins/082502yes_prv.gif[/img] Well, he couldn’t find the tripod he wanted, but at least he did find some noise reducing headphones for the flight back, so the detour wasn’t all in vain.
