Forums Closed
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.

So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.

Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.

And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.

We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.

There are other changes as well.

Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:

We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.

It's time to move on and move forward.

PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.

But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.

So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.

And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.

That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!

If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.

So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

I know there have been times when we've arrived in one park, only to find it crowded and end up changing our evening plans and heading to another park. We would pass our FP onto others. That kind of spontaneity won't be as easy with preplanning to such an extent.

I like the kiosks. I don't want to plan that far ahead either. I had my mind made up last wk which parks I wanted to do, but changed it the night before. Also, when a ride breaks down such as Test Track (2 times before noon one day), and then they hand out fast passes to those standing in line...will they be able to continue to do that? In many ways, the fast pass is part of the game-the experience. If you plan from home, is it going to be like booking a restaurant and you will need to do it at 12:01 or something to get the desired time? Too crazy. No thankyou.

They are putting in kiosk at various locations in the parks for people to make and change fastpass + reservations. Pre booking is only going to be available to Resort guests and AP holders from what I've heard. Day/ of site guests will have to wait to book them at the park when the arrive.

Hey folks remember this is still in test. Disney may decide not to get rid of the regular fast passes.

I think they are past the testing phase with fastpass + and it is very likely that the old system is going as soon as they have the kiosk in place in the parks, The ones I've heard about so far are in City Hall in the MK and in Sid couanagahs store in DHS.

No where and at no time has Disney made an official announcement that they are "getting rid" of FastPasses.

This is a rumor only, and one that has been debunked by several knowledgeable Disney websites.

What we do know:
  • Disney is testing the new FastPass+ system using a limited pool of resort guests right now (probably because they can control the number of people taking part so they can ensure a well-run test.)
  • The new FastPass+ system allows FPs to be accessed electronically by the new MagicBands as well as RFID-enabled Keys to the Kingdom cards.
  • FastPass+, as it's being tested, allows the guest (in this case resort guests) to pre-reserve up to 3 FPs per day in a single park.
  • Special "one point" kiosks are appearing in the parks that allow FastPass+ users to set-up, change and "release" FP+ on the fly.

What we do NOT know -- these are rumors that just don't make logical sense (to me and others):
  • FP machines will be removed. (My guess is they'll be retrofitted with RFID technology that is accessible through RFID tickets, MagicBands and Keys to the Kingdom cards.)
  • Only resort guests will have access to FP+. (As Dave Marx so eloquently outlined in a post in the Rumors forum, it does not make logical sense that Disney would remove such a large proportion of park goers from a very successful crowd control system.)

Before everyone gets themselves spun up over FP+ and the "death of FPs," I think it might be wise to see how the testing goes, and how Disney implements the system with each new stage.

I'm confident that Disney -- the preeminent entertainment company for guest satisfaction and crowd management -- will not create a system that makes guests unhappy.

Not sure where you have that from but everything seems to be pointing to the current fastpass system leaving WDW. That's what I have heard from sites like touring plans and also on the WDW today podcast

So far from what I have herd been said about the fastpass + system is that resort guest will be able to book fastpasses up to 10 days before their stay begins. Ap Holders will also have a similar booking window. Day guest and off site guest will have to wait until they get to a park. Yes it will suck for them because they may not get the ones they want or may not know they have to book it, but it's the same as with people who don't make dining reservations in advance.

I thought WDW just announced rolling out more testing with added resorts until 10/31?

It's separate, but FastPass + is still in testing phase. Only people who receive the Magic Bands are able to use the system now, it has not rolled out to all guests yet. We just returned from a trip this weekend and we did not have access to FP+ since our resort was not part of the test. We only had access to the regular paper FPs.

But that is not an announcement from Disney themselves. Those are reputable sites, but while I like to read the rumors, they're still rumors until Disney announces it.

It's important to keep in mind that the interpretation of "the current FastPass system is going away" does not mean that FPs are being done away with. It's just that the process is changing because FastPass+ is coming in its place. It seems like I'm arguing semantics, but many people are making comments that they fear the end of all FastPasses -- and I, and people like Dave Marx, don't see that happening.

Right now, we're only aware of the way resort guests are testing FP+. But, with the kiosks, non-resort day guests are able to book their FPs on site when they're in a park, and that is essentially how FPs work now. Just the mechanisms will be different; rather than going to an FP machine at a ride to pull a paper FP, a different process will appear in its place.

Personally -- and this is just my take on it and not based on an official announcement from Disney -- there will still be at least one FP machine at the rides that use FP. It will function with RFID technology rather than mag-stripe technology. Those, along with the kiosks, will allow guests to get FP+s on-the-fly.

That's entirely speculation.

I think that's what's going to happen - on-site Guests will be able to make FP+ appointments up to 180 days in advance, but off-site Guests will only be able to make them same-day.

I am on the fence as to whether off-site Guests will be limited to one FP at a time, as with the original system, or up to 3 per day, as in the FP+ system that's currently in testing.

But NONE of this is official, NONE of it has come from Disney, and everything on all of the podcasts, message boards, and fan sites is ALL SPECULATION.

I'm confident that Disney -- the preeminent entertainment company for guest satisfaction and crowd management -- will not create a system that makes guests unhappy.
Darn skippy. There is no way Disney would ever be dumb enough to eliminate FastPass entirely for off-site Guests.

I think you're phrasing that badly.

The current FastPass system is not "leaving WDW." The FP system is certainly going to go through some changes with the new equipment and ticket media, and the method of booking a FP will almost certainly be different, but that's not the same as the system leaving. It's being upgraded and reconfigured.

It's rather like getting an operating system update for your computer. You're not "taking Windows off", you're installing a new version of Windows in place of the old one. You still have Windows - a new version with new capabilities and a different interface.

I am firmly of the opinion that, as you said, on-site Guests will be able to make their FP appointments up to 180 days in advance (probably 3 per day in one park only, which is the limit in the current tests), and off-site Guests will only be able to make FP appointments same-day. Again, I am not certain whether off-site Guests will be able to make up to 3 FPs per day, or be limited to one at a time as we have been since FP's inception.

With all of the uncertainty and speculation, there is one thing that I am absolutely sure of: I am 100% sure that Disney will not take FastPass away from anyone. The hardware may change, the rules may change, but FastPass will remain available to all Guests.
