"This is Not the Trip You're Looking For" TR May/June 2011 - COMPLETE - Page 2 - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Sorry to hear your vacation was less than magical, but with everything that happened before the trip, I can see how that stress would be a factor. Glad you are writing a TR though.
PassPorter's Free-Book to Walt Disney World It’s hard to believe anything is free at Walt Disney World; but there are actually a number of things you can get or do for little to no cost. This e-book documents over 200 free or cheap tips to do before you go and after you arrive. You could save a considerable amount of money following these tips. Perhaps more importantly; you can discover overlooked attractions and little-known details most people whiz by on their way to spend money. Click here to see free sample pages from the e-book! Get this popular e-book free of extra charges when you join the PassPorter's Club for as little as $4.95. A club pass includes access to all our other e-books; e-worksheets; super-size photos; and more! This e-book is also available for separate purchase in the PassPorter Online Store for just $5.95.
So glad to see you are doing a TR. Sorry about the storms and damage. After our trip with the boys last year (my dream trip), I wonder if any trip to WDW will ever match up to that one. During our last trip, in Feb just DH & I, I was not feeling well during a good portion of the trip. Then I came home with the worst flu ever. Even though it was a wonderful trip, it didn't leave me with the same feelings I had last year. I know every trip can't be perfect. Hope you had some good times, despite the stress. Looking forward to following along.

Sounds like you are off to a good start on your TR!
BTW -- do you know who was Qui-Gon Jinn 's Jedi master? This may have bearing on the rest of your TR, I think.
Ha ha, Erik - it's Count Dooku! Hmmm, I'm wondering where you (and the TR) are going with this....

Yes, they did. As soon as the storm passed, they were back on the deck, drying off their fur. Thanks for asking.

As for the perfect trip - not since I was a kid did I have one of these. Especially now that I travel with someone with special needs. The perfect trip has been re-defined in my house.

Thanks, everyone. I think the key is to let each trip have its own unique flavor and style. I know we all have vacations that are more 'special' than others, but each one has its own memories and experiences that will never happen again.

Looking forward to hearing more.
Ahh Meg - you know me too well. I never dwell on the negative for very long and even then, I tend to find the silver linings. (Just like someone else I know. )
I'm glad you made it through the storms and got on with your vacation, albeit not the perfect vakay.

You know, I love a good thunderstorm, but I am so over severe weather. And it is crazy weather, no doubt about it.

I remember that trip, Marnie....

Looking back on it it, I wish I had taken time to shake them off before we left. Lesson learned!

I have a feeling the girls and I will probably come up with some of those fairly soon. Kevin, maaaayybe not!

Thanks everyone! I'm glad I'm writing it, too. It's actually very therapeutic in one sense and also helps me focus on all the fun we did have.

Being ill can definitely effect your feelings towards your trip...which will be an important part of this TR, too. (You must be intuitive to mention that. )

So glad to hear you are writing a TR report despite the less than stellar feelings about it. I agree with another poster who said that we all learn from them, good or less than good. Which reminds me I need to start mine some time soon before I start forgetting details. I had some similar feelings towards mine too as I think I had too much hype and hope for this one as it was my DH's first time ever to WDW. Plus I'm the planner and with it being my 40th beday too, I kinda didn't want to be in control. Well type A that I am, it kinda drove me nuts the entire trip.
I love that you continued your Star Wars theme. They sooo relate to my life too right now.
Sounds like even thru the storms and the two hour delay, yall had a decent first day. And according to the comments above, sounds like Kevin isn't going to be feeling well for part of the trip. We can, unfortunately, relate to that too!
Can't wait to hear more Jedi wisdoms... and more about your trip!
"But do we have a plan B? Every operation needs a backup, Anakin." ~ Obi-Wan Kenobi</SPAN>
I’ve been through some pretty nasty storms before, but these clouds were very dark and ominous – it almost felt as if they were chasing us down the road. I would have taken some photos, but I was too busy checking the weather radar. And oh, when the rain and wind hit, I was totally grateful for those new tires, brakes and windshield wipers we had just bought before the trip!
Kevin got right in the HOV lane in Atlanta and we just made as steady progress as possible. There was debris all across the roads; we saw one huge tree that had smashed the top of a retaining wall and was out in the right lane on I-75!
South of Atlanta, the rain finally let up and we decided to stop for dinner. Kevin wanted to eat at Cracker Barrel, and although it took longer than I wanted, I think we all needed to de-stress a bit from driving through such bad weather.
We arrived at our hotel in Cordele a good 3.5 hrs. after I had originally anticipated. The good news was, since we were checking in after 10:00pm, we received a discounted rate! Cha-ching!
I specifically chose the hotel I did because they offered a breakfast; my plan (stick to the plan!) had everyone bringing in only the necessities they needed for a quick getaway the following morning; grab a bite to eat at the hotel, hit the road and we’d be arriving on WDW property before noon! To make a long story short, there was some grumbling about the breakfast offerings from a male member of our party and so we ended up at McDonald’s across the street. Wise woman that I am, I know when to pick my battles and although it put us behind my timeline again, at least we were fed and on the way.
We a-l-m-o-s-t made it to the resort without having to stop for gas – but by the time we got on FL429, there was no choice but to fill up. It was nearing Kevin’s lunchtime and he was starting to feel irritable and hungry and wanting to get something to eat. The rest of us were like, “We are just a few miles away from Disney! No more stopping!” He grumbled but maybe he knew when to pick his battles – so a few minutes later, we were passing under that glorious sign that lets you know you’re at the Happiest Place on Earth!
This was the first trip we had arrived in the middle of the day, and even though we used Online Check-in, the wait was still long.
The girls headed over to Fulton’s to check out which lanyards they’d like to buy while we stood in line. Most of the CMs were a bit grouchy (I overheard them dealing with some very difficult guests, however) so when we approached the counter, I made it my job to get our CM in a better mood and engage her in conversation. It worked; by the time we were finally finished and our Keys to the World in hand, she was smiling.
We found our room (no easy task at Riverside!) unloaded the van and then headed to Sassagoula Food Court so Kevin could get something to eat. His head was still hurting and he said he didn’t know if he was coming down with a cold, but he had sinus drainage.
Just so you understand, I bought an extra park ticket for us to use this afternoon. Since Sunday was our DHS/SWW day with the Fantasmic! Dinner Package that evening, I wanted to get to the Studios today to see how many regular things we could do – plus see the Hyperspace Hoopla. Not only that, but we had Afternoon Tea at GF scheduled for 3:40pm. So I was getting a bit frustrated with the delays and late arrival….
The girls and I told Kevin we’d rather wait and eat at tea, but we’d have a small snack with him.
By the time we finished, it was nearly time to head over to GF.
Afternoon Tea was a special ‘girls’ treat.’ Since Kevin had his Segway Tour to look forward to, I wanted Kelley and Corinne to have a special something to experience, too. We told Kevin he was more than welcome to come, but if he didn’t want to, he could just hang out at the resort. But he said he wanted to go so…we caught the next bus to MK.
It was strange to be arriving at MK but not actually going inside! But fun to catch the monorail and enjoy the beautiful views of the Grand Floridian. These photos are by Cory.
