It seems to me that your dog is not the problem. Maybe you could get a nice muzzle for your neighbor!!! If she promises to be quiet then she doesn't have to wear it all the time.

I really think it depends as to whether it's an isolated bark or repeated barking. We have 2 dogs and live in a development with minimum 2-3 acre plots. We bring the dogs in as soon as one lets out a bark. They have learned that if they want to stay out they need to be quiet and that even one bark brings them in the house. They will bark if someone approaches the house, but we live in a semi-rural area so it doesn't happen too often. But again, if they bark, they come in.

You can train a dog not to bark with a squirt gun. I've never done it but I know a couple of people who have.

We don't let the dogs bark outside because we had a complaint many years ago. I don't think it was even our dog but the homes in the neighborhood are around a brook and it's sometimes hard to tell where noise is coming from. I did notice there was a dog that barked much of the day and even though I have and love dogs, it can be annoying. I was actually really upset during the campaign because one afternoon canvassers came to my house just as I had fallen asleep. I was not feeling well, the dogs barked and I couldn't get back to sleep.

I would also be conscious as to when you take the dogs out. I know mine need to be out for a first time before 6:00 a.m.

I so don't miss apartment life! I'm not big on dogs

for a number of reasons (barking one of them) but I like naggy neighbors even less!

A little story here about the barking dog. Many years ago, I was the Clerk of Magistrate Court where I live. The judge I worked for actually ordered a dog owner to have the dogs vocal cords cut because his neighbor filed suit against him for having a dog that barked during the day when he was trying to sleep. True story.

That sounds extreme to me. Did the guy actually go through with it? I sure hope that dog was not a watch dog.

A little off subject, but it's not all that uncommon in small towns. My inlaws used to read the police contact log in our local paper when they visited as a source of amusement. They loved the "bat in attic" and "snake in road" calls. Our local police do respond to barking dogs.

I think he gave the dog away. It was extreme. I lost a lot of respect for the judge that day, and eventually got another job.

We live in a small suburb, so they have a lot of time on their hands. They told us if we had another call about the dog they would fine us $500.

The lady next door is just mean. She called the county on the neighbors across the street because she didn't like their garage door (it was old and not nice enough for her taste, I guess) and she also tried to get the city to force our other neighbors to repaint their shutters because she thought the color they chose was tacky (it was almost fuschia, and certainly wouldn't have been my first choice either, but come on).

Yes, dogs bark, but there is a limit. We had this problem when we lived on a military post a few years ago. This dog barked constantly from 5 AM until I finally called the MPs at 7 AM (on a Sunday morning). It was right outside my baby's window. I'd given the owners 2 hours to wake up & do something, but the barking was driving me NUTS. When the MPs came they were furious with the owners for neglecting the dog's cries for help and were in a major violation of the post's quiet hours. They got a HUGE lecture (& a ticket) and that poor dog got treated a lot better after that. It was obvious he wasn't barking just for the heck of it, the poor dog needed something. Certainly not saying that your dogs were neglected, just pointing out how an outsider could perceive too much barking.

I also see your point that she gets what's coming to her. We've had a neighbor like that and I didn't hesitate to call the MPs on her either. She was a crazy one. Everybody knows that military housing is made with paper thin walls- and wow, some people are just crazy.

First of all that lady next door needs some medication or other substance to mellow her butt out!!

She sounds like a nightmare to live next to!!!

I sometimes wish we lived in a smaller place so that the cops were able to respond easier to calls. HOWEVER.....that being said, they do respond (occasionally) to MOOSE calls! Though mostly they tell us "Leave the moose alone and they will leave you alone!!"
