Long Vent about unattended children! - Page 2 - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

I HAVE to pay for Lauren to sit in a room and do her homework. Yesterday, she couldn't even to that, because N. and H. were making so much noise the person who was watching Lauren's group told them to never mind trying to study. (the care-givers told me that!).
Why didn't the supervisor of Lauren's group step into the hallway and tell the boys to quiet down and quit running in the halls, people were trying to study. When I was a teacher I often had to ask students in the hallway to quiet down. Often they had no idea they were disturbing the people inside the room.

I would speak to the administration and ask for the refund of the money
you spent on Lauren's after school care. Since the person in charge told
them not to bother studying because of the noise, you have someone who
could back you up. Then if they won't do that...say, "well then you need to
enforce your policy re: unattended children runing wild". If they don't
do either....then I would talk with the mother.
I find this happens alot. Most of the time the parent thinks the older
child is watching the younger one. It's funny, but I thought that was
the parents job.
I teach at a private school (granted, one where most of the families get financial aid to attend), and our principal is adamant about child supervision -- almost neurotically so! If an unsupervised child gets hurt, we're in lawsuit-city. Strange as it may seem, the administration may not be aware of the problem. Okay, most likely they are, but...
Maybe you could approach the principal (or whoever) and say "I came by to pick up Lauren the other day and noticed a couple of younger students running around unattended in the hallway. I think they were so-and-so's children. Is there a policy in place about parents supervising their children when the parent is in a meeting? I would be so afraid something might happen to them." We've had parents who try to circumvent our after-school care b/c they don't want to pay for it. Our principal will definitely take them on!
If your principal has half a brain, he/she will recognize the liability problem here and do something about it. I understand where you're coming from -- a couple of my 7th graders got into a fist fight last year (not on my watch -- another teacher was supposed to be watching them). Since then, I've been the "supervision police" for our unit, and it really hacks me off when other teachers can't be bothered watching the kids. Anything can happen -- and will if the adults aren't on top of things.
Good luck with it!

Pat (a.k.a., PFlamingo) "We are the people our parents warned us about."
Play like a mouse - Dumb.
Maybe a petition type letter from a couple of the parents complaining-- signatures on the same letter and state the problem to the school principal. Each expect a rply back. Keep a signed copy for each person.
After your signatures include a "copy to" and send a copy to the next highest superintendent, propably city. Being the school has not done anyhing yet this petition with additional signatures will let the school and the next superintendent know that more than one person is concerned. The next superintendent will now be aware of the problem and will inquire on a follow up being they have been informed.
If you do not get replies, send an original letter to the superintendent and a copy to the next superintendent, which is probably the county. By now you should have a reply and action. I doubt the county will want this to go further let alone a superintendent being put on the carpet with complaints and no action.
This mouse is also a trouble maker, call he local police and tell them there is a small unattended, child on the grounds , that you have already notified the principal without results and don't give your name. I bet you a piece of cheese that the police will arrive. Is a principal going to tell the police that a child is unattended and that he did nothing? I think not, especially if they get repeated calls again. So, you didn't know the mother was there, you are just reporting the unattended child. Besides, you did not give your name to the police.
Get'm mouse.
If they are big contributers, then I bet speaking to the administration would not net you any action. I'd speak to the mother directly. Not in an ugly way, but a did you realize that your kids were acting this way and there IS care available. I might mention that you were worried about the kid's safety (even if you weren't) with all the strangers at the building watching the sports events.
I was thinking the very same thing! If the mother is "sweet" & "naive" like you say, chances of her taking offense is minimal. You may get better results talking to her than the admin.
Okay - so an update - I talked to the mom.
I didn't say anything about HER boys, but brought it up as a "You're on the school-board, how do you think we should handle the number of unattended children running about?" (there are always kids all over the place - people come to watch a HS soccer game, and their 4 year olds are in the buildings, running about)
I explained I was concerned about the kids' safety, not so much they'll be kidnapped (that is really a minute possibility), but that they'll fall and get hurt, or get run over by older kids, or go into the parking lot and get hit by a car. The board will be talking about it soon.
Thank you all for your input.
